Genshin Impact takes up so much space because its small store listing is only the app package—not the full collection of game resources. The installed game includes a large open world, characters, quests, audio and continuing updates. Its actual footprint depends on platform, installed resources and whether you are installing or updating.
Why does Genshin Impact take up so much space?
The game’s storage use reflects more than its initial download. Its world, characters, quests, audio and updates require substantial resources, and those resources build up as the game expands. Apple describes Genshin Impact as a massive open world with real-time rendering, character animations and a soundtrack that changes with time and gameplay. Those features help explain the scale, but no cited source gives a gigabyte-by-gigabyte breakdown of the assets.
New content can add a noticeable amount. HoYoverse’s official HoYoLAB storage advice says new-nation resource packages have ranged from just under 3 GB to almost 10 GB, and that Fontaine’s package was over 8 GB. These are examples, not a fixed size for every nation or a measure of the complete game on every platform.
Visual changes can also increase device demands. In a notice dated May 9, 2024, HoYoverse said Version 5.0 would upgrade the game’s overall visuals and functions and that some older devices would receive reduced visual performance. The notice does not quantify how much storage those changes added.

How many GB does Genshin Impact take?
There is no single current size that applies to every platform and installation. The published figures below describe different things, so they should not be treated as interchangeable.

Apple’s App Store listing is specific to the United States and can change. HoYoverse’s PC FAQ also discusses large game files and reserved space in different contexts; it includes older platform requirements, so it should not be used as a universal current install-size table. HoYoverse PC FAQ

Why is the app size smaller than the storage requirement?
A storefront’s app-size field and a device’s available-space requirement measure different things. The app-size figure does not represent every resource the game needs after installation. The available-space guidance is the amount of room Apple says to have on the device; it should not be reported as the game’s exact installed size.
Updates also need room to download and apply files. HoYoverse’s PC FAQ calls the game files large, recommends a stable connection and advises freeing disk space if an update reports insufficient space. A fresh installation and an update may therefore have different space needs.

What affects the space Genshin Impact uses?
- Platform: Published requirements differ by platform, and the available figures here do not establish a definitive current size for every PC, console and mobile configuration.
- Installed resources: HoYoLAB notes that resource packages add to storage use. Installed voice-over languages can also affect the total.
- Game updates: New regions and other additions bring more resources, while applying an update may require additional free space.
- Installation state: A store download figure, a completed installation and the free space needed to update are separate measures.
How can you free up Genshin Impact storage?
Manage past quest resources on mobile
- Open Genshin Impact and go to Settings > Resources > Past Quest Resource Management.
- Review the past quest resources available to manage and remove those you no longer need.
- If you revisit content that needs removed resources, expect the game to download them again. Availability and behavior may vary by version.

Make room before an installation or update
- Check the current storage guidance for your platform rather than relying on an old size figure from another platform.
- Keep free space beyond the listed download size, since installing or applying updates can require additional room.

Check external-storage rules before buying a drive
An external drive does not make the game’s files smaller, and compatibility with a device does not by itself prove that Genshin Impact can be installed or run from that drive. Check your platform’s external-storage rules and the game’s install options first.
