“GTA stuck on installing” can mean a stalled download, file verification, an update, disc copying or launcher setup. The right fix depends on your platform and which stage has stopped—not just on how long the screen has been open. Note the exact message or error code, percentage, elapsed time and whether network or disk activity continues, then use the matching steps below.
First, identify what is actually stuck
Before changing files or reinstalling, check whether the game is downloading, verifying files, applying an update, copying from a disc or being prepared by a launcher. A progress bar that has not moved does not by itself establish that the files are corrupted or that you need more storage.

- Write down whether you are on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S, and name the storefront or launcher if applicable.
- Record the exact on-screen wording and error code, the percentage or stage, and how long it has been unchanged.
- Check whether network or disk activity is still occurring and how much free space is available on the selected drive.
Fix a GTA install or update stuck on PC
Rockstar’s PC guidance, last updated October 7, 2025, recommends launching while connected to the internet so the latest patch can apply, updating graphics drivers, installing Rockstar Games Launcher and verifying the game files in the launcher where you own the game. Verify the game files in the launcher you use
Use the file-verification option in Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam or Epic Games Launcher. This checks the installed game files; it is a more targeted step than deleting the game and downloading it again.

If Epic Games Launcher’s download is stuck
Epic’s specific flow for a stuck launcher download is to sign out of your account and the launcher, force-close Epic tasks in Task Manager, enable debug logging in launcher settings, use the sign-in-later/sign-in flow, then click Download again. If Steam’s install or update process is stuck
For general Steam installation or update errors, Steam recommends restarting Steam and the computer, then clearing the download cache. Its troubleshooting also includes testing an alternate drive. If the error names DirectX, Direct3D or Visual C++
Rockstar directs players to the corresponding installers in the game’s Redistributables folder for these errors. If the issue persists, its guidance also recommends checking whether antivirus software is interfering and inspecting launcher.log in My DocumentsRockstar GamesGTAV. DxDiag and MSInfo reports can help identify system failures when seeking support.
Make reinstalling a later step
Epic says a clean installation can resolve GTA V update difficulties and links players to Rockstar’s PC clean-install directions. Reinstalling takes time and bandwidth, so first capture the exact error and follow the current instructions for your storefront and game version rather than treating a reinstall as the default fix. Troubleshoot a stuck installation on PS4 or PS5
PlayStation’s general game-start guidance recommends checking the disc for a physical copy and confirming any extended storage is connected correctly. Its steps are general PlayStation support, not a GTA-specific diagnosis. PlayStation game-start troubleshooting
- Restart the console and check for system software updates.
- If you use a disc, inspect it. If the game is on extended storage, check that the drive is connected correctly.
- Restore licenses, then try deleting and re-downloading the game if the earlier checks do not help. A wired connection may help with the re-download if available.
- Use the Safe Mode cache/database options described in PlayStation’s support guidance if the problem continues.
For PS5, PlayStation advises moving game data from USB extended storage to the console’s internal storage when troubleshooting a game that will not start. Do not assume an external drive is the right place for PS5 game data in this case.

Xbox: use Xbox-specific guidance
Installation instructions depend on whether the console is Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S. Preserve the displayed error code and consult Xbox Support’s installation guidance for the exact console and error. PlayStation’s troubleshooting steps should not be applied to Xbox by default.
Check storage against the exact GTA version
Rockstar lists 125GB of HDD space as a minimum requirement for Grand Theft Auto V Legacy on PC. That figure is specific to that PC version; it is not a universal requirement for every GTA edition, update or console. Check the current requirement for your exact version and the free space on the drive selected for installation before deciding you need another drive. Rockstar’s PC system requirements

Additional storage is only relevant if the chosen destination lacks capacity and the platform supports installing the game there. It will not, by itself, fix a launcher download, network issue, license problem or damaged files.
When to contact support
If the relevant platform steps do not resolve the problem, report it to the service responsible for the stage that failed: the console or launcher for its installation process, and Rockstar for a GTA-specific PC issue. Include the platform and storefront, exact error text or code, installation stage, how long it has been stuck, whether network or disk activity changes, available space and the steps you have already tried. PlayStation asks users to provide the error, a description and reproduction steps, plus a screenshot or video where possible.
