Why Is Minecraft Randomly Crashing? How to Diagnose and Fix It

Minecraft crashes have different causes on Java and Bedrock. Identify when the crash happens, check updates, and use the right logs and troubleshooting steps for your edition.

“Random” describes how a Minecraft crash feels; it does not identify its cause. The right troubleshooting path depends first on whether you play Java Edition or Bedrock Edition, your platform, and whether the crash happens at startup, while loading a world, or during play. Record those details and any error message, then check updates and follow the edition-specific steps below.

Why does Minecraft keep crashing?

A crash can be associated with game or operating-system updates, graphics compatibility, add-ons or other content, or a problem specific to a particular launch or world. Without your edition, platform, error details, and circumstances, no single cause can be established. Avoid buying hardware or repair software based on the symptom alone.

Minecraft’s official troubleshooting paths differ by edition. Microsoft’s guidance for Bedrock graphics and performance issues recommends checking game, operating-system, and Windows graphics-driver updates, verifying Windows minimum requirements, and then testing add-ons or video settings if updating does not help. Read Microsoft’s Bedrock performance guidance.

What to check before changing anything

Write down the details that will help distinguish a repeatable problem from an isolated crash:

Minecraft - Nintendo Switch
  • Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
  • Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
  • Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
  • Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
  • Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
  • Edition: Java or Bedrock.
  • Platform and operating system.
  • Game version, if available.
  • When it crashes: startup, world loading, or during play.
  • Exact error text or code, and the relevant crash report or log.
  • Recent changes, such as a game or system update, a new add-on, or changed video settings.

Make one troubleshooting change at a time and check whether the crash happens again. That keeps the result useful instead of leaving several possible causes mixed together.

Try the common checks first

  1. Check for updates. Update Minecraft and your operating system. If you play Bedrock on Windows and the problem involves graphics or performance, check for a graphics-driver update from the relevant GPU vendor and verify that your PC meets the game’s current minimum requirements. Microsoft includes these checks in its Bedrock performance troubleshooting.
  2. For Bedrock graphics or performance problems, test settings and add-ons. If updates do not help, temporarily disable add-ons or change video settings. Test one change at a time so you can tell whether it affects the crash. These steps are part of Microsoft’s official guidance.
  3. Use the log or report that matches your edition. Bedrock content logs can help identify content-related errors or warnings. Java crash reports and Java-related log files are a separate diagnostic path; do not treat a Bedrock content log as a substitute.

Minecraft keeps crashing on startup

First note whether the game closes before reaching the title screen or only after you select a world. Check for updates and capture any error text or report the game produces. If you use Java Edition, the Minecraft support index lists a separate article about crashes related to memory allocation, but the available support listing does not provide enough instruction to recommend a particular memory allocation. Use the Minecraft support index to find the applicable support topic rather than guessing at a value.

Minecraft crashes when I load a world

If the crash appears tied to a Bedrock world or content pack, inspect the Bedrock content log. Microsoft says the log records content processing—including skins, configuration files, and mob behavior—and that errors and warnings may point to problematic or concerning content. Informational messages around an error can add context; they are not necessarily problems by themselves. See Microsoft’s Bedrock content-log documentation.

Find the Bedrock content log

  1. Open the Creator settings and enable the content log controls you need.
  2. Review content log history from the profile screen. If the GUI log is enabled, press Control+H to view it.
  3. Use the profile screen to find the current log-file location. Microsoft’s example folders include %APPDATA%Minecraft Bedrocklogs on Windows, games/com.mojang/logs on Android, and Minecraft/game/com.mojang/logs on iOS. On mobile devices, storage locations vary, so these examples may not match every installation.

Look for messages close to the time of the crash and note which content they name. A log entry can help narrow the investigation, but it does not by itself prove that a particular item caused the crash.

What a Java graphics error can—and cannot—tell you

Oracle documents a legacy Java crash scenario in which an org.lwjgl.opengl line appears in an hs_log_pid file. In that specific context, Oracle says the message indicates a graphics-driver incompatibility with LWJGL and recommends updating the graphics driver. The page’s stated scope is Windows 7, 8, XP, or 10 with Java 7 or 8, so treat it as a bounded example—not a diagnosis for every current Java Edition crash. See Oracle’s Minecraft crash-log explanation.

If your Java crash report does not show that clue, preserve the report and use the exact error and circumstances to find the relevant support path. The Oracle example should not be generalized beyond its stated legacy scope.

When the crash remains unexplained

Use Minecraft’s support categories and provide your edition, platform, game version, when the crash occurs, the exact error, and the relevant report or log. Those details let support distinguish a startup failure, content-related issue, or graphics clue without assuming a cause. The Minecraft support index lists separate topics for different problems.
