An Acer Nitro 5 can feel laggy for several different reasons: low frame rates, brief stutters, online network delay, or sluggish input. Start by identifying which one you have. Then check power and graphics selection before changing drivers or buying hardware. Nitro 5 configurations vary by model, so note your exact model number—such as AN515-45 or AN515-58—before installing drivers or changing BIOS settings. Find it by pressing Windows + R, entering msinfo32, and checking System Model, or use Acer Support.
First, identify what kind of lag you have

Changing graphics settings will not fix a bad network connection, and a cooling pad will not fix an incorrect GPU selection. If the problem is online-only, check ping and packet loss before troubleshooting FPS.
Try these quick checks first
- Connect the original Acer AC adapter. Start the game after plugging it in, and confirm Windows shows the laptop as charging or plugged in. Gaming on battery can limit CPU and GPU power. If performance improves immediately, investigate power mode, adapter recognition, or battery operation. Acer recommends AC power for maximum gaming performance (Acer’s Nitro 5 troubleshooting guidance).
- Check Windows power mode. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Power & battery and select Best performance if available. Some configurations instead list a High performance plan under Windows’ Choose a power plan or Power Options. Labels vary; do not assume every Nitro 5 offers an “Ultimate Performance” plan. Higher performance can use more power and make the laptop warmer (Microsoft’s Windows performance tips).
- Check NitroSense. Open it and look at the power profile, fan controls, temperatures, and GPU activity available for your model. Use a performance-oriented profile only while plugged in, and watch temperatures. NitroSense controls and profile names differ among Nitro 5 generations.
- Close resource-heavy apps for a test. Pause downloads and close browsers, cloud-sync tools, game launchers you do not need, recording software, and overlays. Restart the game and compare.
- Change one thing at a time. Use the same game scene for before-and-after checks. Note FPS, whether stutters occur, and temperatures if available. This makes it easier to identify what helped and undo changes that did not.
Make sure the game uses the discrete GPU
Many Nitro 5 models combine integrated graphics with a discrete NVIDIA or AMD GPU. A game assigned to the integrated GPU may perform poorly, but a discrete-only or MUX-switch option is not present on every model.

On supported Nitro 5 models, NitroSense may offer a setting such as Discrete GPU only, NVIDIA GPU only, or a similar GPU mode. Check NitroSense settings; if you change GPU mode, follow any restart prompt. Do not look for this control if your model does not support it.
During a game, check GPU activity in NitroSense or Task Manager’s Performance tab. Interpret it alongside FPS, clock speeds, and CPU use:
- If the discrete GPU is barely active while integrated graphics is doing the work, check per-game GPU assignment and drivers.
- If the GPU stays near full utilization and FPS is low, the resolution or graphics settings may be too demanding for that GPU.
- If CPU use is very high while GPU use is low, the game may be CPU-limited, a background task may be competing, or heat or power limits may be affecting performance.
- Low GPU utilization by itself does not prove a fault. A frame cap, CPU bottleneck, storage wait, or driver problem can also leave the GPU underused.
Check temperatures, fans, and performance over time
Run the same game scene for five to ten minutes and observe CPU and GPU temperatures, clock speeds, utilization, and whether FPS or frame-time gets worse after warm-up. NitroSense can show temperature and load information, although available readings vary by model.

There is no single temperature number that proves every Nitro 5 is overheating: limits vary with the processor, graphics chip, firmware, workload, fan profile, and room temperature. Look at the relationship between temperature, clocks, and performance rather than using a universal cutoff.

- Use the laptop on a hard, flat surface—not bedding, carpet, or clothing.
- Keep intake and exhaust vents clear. Remove visible dust carefully; do not force debris deeper into the chassis.
- Check that fans ramp up under load in NitroSense.
- Try a modest frame-rate cap or lower settings and see whether sustained performance improves.
- Consider a ventilated stand or cooling pad only if heat or blocked airflow is actually implicated.
If fans do not spin, make grinding noises, temperatures are abnormal at idle, the laptop shuts down under load, or clock speeds collapse despite clear vents and sensible power settings, seek qualified service. Repasting is not a routine first step: it can complicate warranty service and may not address a failing fan, heatsink, sensor, or power component. Acer’s Nitro 5 guidance also recommends checking airflow and monitoring temperatures.
Update software carefully—and match the exact model
Before installing anything, record the full System Model from msinfo32, the Windows version, and the current graphics-driver version. Go to Acer Drivers and Manuals or Acer Support and search by model, serial number, SNID, or part number. Check the exact-model packages for graphics, chipset, integrated graphics, BIOS or firmware, and NitroSense if needed. Do not use a BIOS or driver meant for a similar-looking AN515 variant.
Acer’s model-specific drivers are tested for its configurations. NVIDIA or AMD may offer newer generic graphics drivers, but Acer does not guarantee every third-party package for every Nitro configuration. Start with Acer’s package when compatibility is the priority; consider a manufacturer’s newer driver if a specific game or known driver issue warrants it. Install Windows updates and restart after major driver changes. Acer explains this compatibility trade-off in its troubleshooting advice.

Otherwise reinstall the appropriate Acer driver. If the installer offers a clean-install option, use it when corruption is suspected. Avoid third-party driver-cleaning tools as a first response; create a restore point where practical and note the current version before changing drivers.

A BIOS update is not a general FPS boost. Read the release notes for your exact model, keep the AC adapter connected, and never interrupt the update. If the laptop is unstable or may lose power, contact Acer support before proceeding.
Adjust game settings to find the bottleneck
Record current performance, then lower one setting and retest the same scene. Start with resolution or render scale: a substantial FPS improvement points toward a GPU limit. If FPS barely changes, test CPU-heavy options and background activity instead.
- Often GPU-intensive: resolution, render scale, ray tracing, shadows, reflections, ambient occlusion, volumetric effects, anti-aliasing, and view distance.
- Can be CPU- or frame-time-intensive: population density, physics, simulation distance, world streaming, and object or foliage density.
- Potential alternatives: enable DLSS, FSR, or another supported upscaler; use a stable FPS cap the laptop can sustain rather than chasing brief peak frame rates.
Lowering every setting to minimum is not necessary. Keep the settings that do not burden the limiting component, and change only those that improve the result. Acer also recommends testing lower resolution, shadows, anti-aliasing, and supported upscaling in its Nitro 5 troubleshooting guide.
Find background apps and overlay conflicts
While the game is running, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Under Processes and Performance, look for high CPU, memory, disk, or network use—especially at the moment a stutter occurs. Close unnecessary apps and review Startup apps to disable nonessential programs. Microsoft recommends Task Manager for finding resource-heavy processes (Windows performance tips).

Test with overlays and recording disabled one at a time: Xbox Game Bar and background recording, NVIDIA or AMD overlays, Discord and Steam overlays, and third-party capture or monitoring tools. They do not always cause lag, but can consume resources or conflict on some systems. Acer specifically suggests testing with Game Bar and background recording disabled.
If the issue persists and seems software-related, a Windows clean boot can help isolate a third-party conflict. Search for System Configuration, open Services, check Hide all Microsoft services, and disable remaining third-party services. Then disable nonessential startup items through Task Manager and restart to test. Re-enable services and startup items in batches to find the conflict, then restore normal startup. Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions carefully; disabling services can affect installed software.

RAM: In Task Manager, check memory use while the game is open. If it repeatedly approaches 90–100%, Windows may page data to storage, contributing to pauses and stutters. Close browsers and other apps as a test. Some 8 GB configurations can struggle with newer games and other programs running, but adding RAM does not guarantee higher average FPS. Confirm the exact model’s supported memory type and capacity before considering an upgrade; faulty memory may require service.
Storage: Check whether the game is on an SSD or a slower hard drive, whether the system drive is nearly full, and whether disk use spikes when the game hitches. An SSD can improve loading and may reduce some streaming-related pauses, but will not make an underpowered GPU render more frames. Back up data before replacing or cloning a drive. If Windows reports errors or a drive disappears, treat that as a possible hardware problem.

Game files: If one title is affected, use the launcher’s built-in verify, repair, or app-repair function (for example, Steam’s installed-file verification or Epic Games’ library verification). Mods, a recent patch, shader compilation, corrupted settings, or a game-specific GPU assignment can affect just one game. If every game performs poorly, prioritize system-wide power, GPU selection, cooling, and drivers.
Check refresh rate, display mode, and network conditions
For delayed or uneven-feeling input, open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and confirm the intended refresh rate is selected. Compare fullscreen and borderless modes, and temporarily test without V-Sync or a variable-refresh feature if the problem began with that setting. If you use an external monitor, test it and the laptop screen separately; display ports may connect to different graphics paths. Windows 11’s windowed-game optimizations apply only to compatible configurations and games, so they are not a universal fix (Microsoft’s feature overview). For online-only symptoms, check the game’s ping and packet-loss indicators. Pause uploads and downloads, disconnect a VPN temporarily, and test closer to the router or over Ethernet. Wi-Fi interference, router congestion, server routing, or the game server can cause players to teleport while local FPS remains steady. Graphics and cooling adjustments will not fix network latency.

When to seek repair
Contact Acer Support or a qualified repair service if the laptop shuts down or reboots under load; fans fail or grind; the charger is not recognized; the battery swells; the GPU repeatedly disappears; you see persistent artifacts or driver crashes; temperatures are abnormal at idle; a drive disappears or repeatedly reports errors; or a memory test reports faults. Also seek service if severe performance loss continues across games after checking AC power, GPU assignment, temperatures, and the correct drivers. Avoid opening the laptop or replacing thermal paste casually, especially if it is under warranty. Acer’s support portal provides model-specific drivers, manuals, warranty and repair options.
