A CurseForge modpack can fail during download or installation, when the launcher starts Minecraft, after the game opens, or during account authentication. The quickest way to narrow it down is to note exactly when it fails and copy the full error message; then follow the check for that stage rather than changing unrelated settings.
Start with the failure stage and exact error
“Not working” can mean several different things: a pack will not install, a download stops, the launcher opens but Minecraft does not, the game crashes, or the launcher cannot authenticate your account. CurseForge lists separate fixes for these cases in its error-message reference and installation and launch guide.
Before troubleshooting, record the complete error text, whether it affects one profile or every pack, and what changed just before the problem began—such as a mod update, a new mod, a changed install location, or a launcher setting. Those details help distinguish a profile-specific compatibility issue from an app, system, network, or login problem.
Try the checks that match your symptom
If installation or the launcher fails
- In the CurseForge app, use Repair Installation if the relevant installation or launch error recommends it. CurseForge lists repair for multiple common problems, including download error code 0 and some launcher or runtime failures. Retry once and note whether the error changes.
- Check that the selected install location is readable and writable by your account, and that the drives have enough free space. CurseForge advises against using Desktop or OneDrive locations, the vanilla Minecraft folder, a drive root, or a path containing non-English or special characters. The app’s default location or a simple dedicated folder is a better choice.
- Check available storage on both the system drive and the drive used for modding. CurseForge’s error reference says a new modpack installation needs at least 10 GB available across those drives because temporary files also use the system drive. This is an installation requirement, not a general estimate of a pack’s final size.
If a download or Forge installation fails
CurseForge identifies an unstable connection, firewall or antivirus interference, and VPN or proxy settings as possible causes of download and Forge installer problems. Check whether the connection is stable and whether those settings are interfering with required downloads. If you temporarily change a security or network setting to test, restore it afterward. If Minecraft starts and then crashes or a profile will not load
- Compare the modpack’s Minecraft version and modloader with the versions required by its mods. A mod must match the profile’s loader; CurseForge notes that a file may be flagged as incompatible when it lacks the applicable author tag, even if it might technically work.
- Consider whether a recent mod update stopped supporting the profile’s loader. If so, use a release compatible with that loader or revert to an earlier compatible version rather than forcing an unrelated version into the pack.
- Check the profile’s memory allocation without guessing. CurseForge’s Getting Started guide gives 4 GB (4096 MB) as the default modpack allocation and advises against setting it below 4 GB or raising it so far that it strains the rest of the system. Follow a modpack author’s recommendation when available. More memory is not a guaranteed fix for a crash.
CurseForge says its app installs Java for the game automatically, but its error guide also lists a missing or outdated Java runtime as a possible problem. If the exact message names Java or a runtime, follow that error’s recommended repair, reinstall, or Java-path steps instead of changing Java settings pre-emptively. If the button says “Play Demo”
CurseForge says this typically indicates an account-login problem, not a modpack compatibility issue. Sign out and back into the correct Minecraft account. When to contact CurseForge support
If the matching error entry and relevant checks do not resolve the problem, follow that article’s support instructions. Include the full error message and CurseForge logs; the official launch guidance requests logs for unresolved modpack and launcher problems. Without the profile’s game version, loader, mods, operating system, recent changes, and logs, there is no reliable way to identify one cause for every player.
