“After a few hours” does not point to one specific cause. Find out whether FFmpeg exited, its input stopped, the network failed, YouTube’s ingest became unhealthy, or only the viewer-facing broadcast stopped. The failure time, FFmpeg’s exit status and final log lines, input status, and YouTube Live Control Room’s timestamped stream-health messages are the evidence that can distinguish them.
First identify what actually stopped
A stopped or frozen player alone does not show that the FFmpeg process exited. At the failure time, check each layer separately:
- FFmpeg process: Is it still running? If it exited, record its exit status and the final lines of its log.
- Input or source: Is it still live or readable, and is it still producing packets?
- Network and output: Did FFmpeg report an input/output error? Note which side failed and which protocol handler was in use.
- YouTube ingest: Check the stream-health indicator and any timestamped error in Live Control Room or the Live Dashboard. YouTube marks critical errors red and moderate errors yellow (YouTube’s live streaming error messages).
Match the evidence to the exact time the stream stopped. Runtime by itself does not establish a YouTube time limit or identify the fault.
Check YouTube’s ingest and encoder settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It specifies constant bitrate (CBR), recommends a keyframe every 2 seconds, and says not to exceed 4 seconds. The appropriate bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; use the row for your actual format rather than treating one bitrate as universal.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For one example—not a setting for every stream—YouTube lists H.264 at 1080p30 with a 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. Check the current table for your stream’s resolution, frame rate, and codec in YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guide.
If YouTube shows an error at the stop time, address that message before changing unrelated FFmpeg flags. YouTube’s error guidance identifies issues including incorrect stream format, video or audio settings, bitrate, and keyframe frequency; the dashboard’s timestamp helps connect a warning to the failure.

Separate source problems from connection problems
If FFmpeg is still running but packets stop
Investigate the input or source: confirm it remains available and produces data, then check its own uptime and reconnect behavior. A healthy FFmpeg process cannot send a continuous stream if its source has stopped.
If FFmpeg reports an I/O error
Determine whether the failed operation was on the input or output and identify the protocol in use. The final log lines and exit status are more useful than adding generic “reconnect” flags without knowing what failed.

If stream health degrades as upload varies
YouTube advises testing upload bitrate and choosing a stream quality that is reliable for the available connection. Test before the event with audio and movement similar to the real stream, and monitor stream health while it runs. If Wi-Fi instability is suspected, a wired Ethernet run can be a diagnostic comparison, but it is not a guaranteed fix or a remedy for source, encoder, or ingest errors. See YouTube’s reliability and testing guidance.
Use FFmpeg recovery options only when they fit the protocol
FFmpeg’s timeout and reconnect options are protocol-specific, and reading from an input is not the same as writing to an output. Check the documentation for your installed FFmpeg version and the actual protocol handler before adding an option. For example, FFmpeg documents timeout and ignore_io_errors for HTTP output; that does not establish that they apply to RTMP output. Do not copy HTTP-specific recovery flags into an RTMP command as a presumed fix. Consult the FFmpeg protocol documentation and the FFmpeg option documentation.

Choose the fix from the evidence
| What you observe | Where to investigate |
|---|---|
| FFmpeg exited | Use the exit status and final error lines to determine whether the input or output failed. |
| FFmpeg remains up, but source packets stop | Investigate source availability, uptime, and reconnect behavior. |
| YouTube reports unhealthy stream health or a settings error | Match the timestamped message to the encoder settings and correct the named issue. |
| Quality degrades during upload variation | Test sustained upload reliability and reduce stream quality if the connection cannot reliably carry the configured stream. |
| Evidence points to a network interruption | Check protocol-appropriate I/O or recovery behavior; consider a watchdog or restart design only after identifying the failure mode. |
