Why Is My FPS So Low All of a Sudden? Causes and Fixes

A sudden FPS drop can come from background activity, a driver change, a frame-rate cap, or hardware limits. Start with quick checks, then measure before upgrading.

A sudden FPS drop is a symptom, not a diagnosis. First check whether it happens in the same game and scene, then close unused apps and restart Windows. Next look for a recent driver change, a frame-rate cap, low storage, or signs that the whole PC is slow. Measure CPU and GPU use, clock speeds, and temperatures before concluding that hardware needs an upgrade.

Why did my FPS drop suddenly?

The timing of the drop can point to a cause, but it does not prove one. Background programs, Windows or driver changes, limited free storage, a game setting, or hardware that cannot keep up can all affect performance. More than one factor may contribute. Microsoft recommends trying several performance steps rather than assuming there is one universal fix: Tips to improve PC performance in Windows.

Check whether the problem is consistent

Retest the same game, scene, resolution, graphics preset, and display mode. Note whether the issue affects one game or several, and whether it is a sustained low frame rate or brief stutter. Changing multiple settings between tests makes it harder to identify what helped.

Look for a recent change

Think about whether the drop started after a Windows update, graphics-driver change, game update, or new background app. A driver rollback is not a general first fix, but it is worth considering if the decline began directly after a graphics-driver update—especially if Windows also reports a graphics-device error.

How do I fix low FPS in a game?

Work from quick, reversible checks toward more involved diagnosis. Change one thing at a time and repeat the same gameplay test.

  1. Close unused apps and restart. Exit unnecessary programs and browser tabs, then restart Windows. Retest before making other changes.
  2. Check Windows and driver updates. Open Settings > Windows Update and check for updates. Also inspect optional driver updates if they are offered for your device. If the problem followed a graphics-driver change, check Device Manager for a device error and consider updating, reinstalling, or rolling back the affected driver. Microsoft documents these options for Device Manager error code 43 in Device Manager error codes in Windows 10. That page applies to Windows 10, whose support ended October 14, 2025.
  3. Check free storage and broader system performance. If the drive is nearly full, use Windows storage settings to review and remove files you do not need. If the desktop and other apps also feel slow, consider a Windows Security scan for unexplained activity. Low storage or malware can contribute to general slowdown, but neither proves the cause of a particular game’s FPS drop.
  4. Check for a fixed frame-rate ceiling. If FPS repeatedly stops at a neat value, inspect the game’s frame limiter and V-Sync settings. Disable or adjust one at a time, then retest. NVIDIA’s FrameView 1.1 troubleshooting guide identifies a limiter and V-Sync as possible explanations for a capped rate; the guide’s version-specific advice is a targeted check, not a diagnosis for every game: FrameView troubleshooting guide.
  5. Record performance while reproducing the drop. Track average FPS and 1% low FPS alongside CPU/GPU utilization, clock speeds, and temperatures. NVIDIA FrameView 1.7 lists these among its available metrics: FrameView documentation. Use the same scene or built-in benchmark for each comparison; readings from different workloads are not directly comparable.
  6. Try a clean boot if a software conflict still seems plausible. A clean boot starts Windows with essential drivers and startup programs, which can help determine whether another app or service is interfering. If the game runs normally, re-enable startup items or services systematically to isolate the conflict, then restore normal startup. Follow Microsoft’s steps in How to perform a clean boot in Windows. This is more disruptive than closing apps, so use it only when simpler checks have not helped.

Why is my FPS capped at 60?

A stable ceiling near 60 FPS—or another repeated value—can be a settings limit rather than a sudden loss of PC performance. Check the game’s own FPS limiter and V-Sync first. NVIDIA’s FrameView 1.1 troubleshooting guide says a limiter can restrict rendering to a specified rate, while V-Sync can tie frame rate to monitor refresh rate. Turn off or adjust one setting at a time; if the ceiling remains, check any other frame-limiting options available in the game or graphics settings.

Could heat or a hardware fault be responsible?

They are possibilities to investigate, not conclusions to draw from low FPS alone. Compare temperatures, clock speeds, and utilization during the same workload. There is no universal temperature threshold established here for every PC or GPU; compare readings with the specifications from your computer or graphics-card maker. If readings suggest a fault, Windows reports a device error, or performance remains poor after software checks, contact the PC or game maker for device-specific help.

When should I consider upgrading?

An upgrade is a later option if the installed hardware cannot meet a game’s demands, particularly on an older PC. Microsoft notes that software steps may not significantly improve performance on older PCs with outdated hardware and that upgrading may be a long-term solution: Tips to improve PC performance in Windows. That does not establish that a graphics card caused a sudden drop or that replacing it will fix one. For a desktop graphics-card upgrade, compatibility depends on the complete system, including the power supply and case, as well as the games and settings you use.
