If your high-refresh-rate monitor is showing 60 Hz, first check which display and refresh rate Windows has selected. Then confirm the chosen resolution and the entire connection path—from the graphics output through any dock or adapter to the monitor—can support your target mode. A 60 Hz setting is often fixable in Windows, but a hardware or connection limit can keep a higher rate from appearing.
Set the refresh rate in Windows
Microsoft defines 60 Hz as 60 screen updates per second. Windows lists the rates available for the selected display in Advanced display; the choices depend on the modes that display supports. Follow these steps on Windows 10 or Windows 11:
- Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
- If more than one display is connected, select the monitor that is stuck at 60 Hz in the display selector.
- Check the current resolution, then open the refresh-rate menu and choose the desired rate if it is listed for that resolution. See Microsoft’s Windows refresh-rate instructions for the current steps.
Some entries in the menu have an asterisk because they do not support the current resolution. Selecting one changes the resolution to reach that rate. If you want to play at your monitor’s intended or native resolution, choose a refresh rate offered at that resolution rather than accepting an unexpected resolution change.
If the higher refresh rate is missing
Check the resolution and monitor settings
Confirm that Windows is using the resolution you intend to play at. Then check the monitor’s input and mode settings, and consult its manual or specification table for the rates supported by that input. A monitor’s headline maximum does not by itself establish that every input supports that rate at every resolution.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check the whole connection path
The graphics output, cable, any adapter or dock, and the monitor input must all support the target resolution and refresh-rate combination together. DisplayPort and HDMI links have bandwidth and cable-class requirements, so a cable or an intermediate device can limit the modes Windows offers. VESA says certified DisplayPort cables support HBR2, which is capable of 4K at 60 Hz, and recommends reputable or certified cables for reliable operation; its guidance also describes higher-rated cables for newer, higher-bandwidth configurations (VESA DisplayPort cable guidance). HDMI Licensing Administrator describes cable classes including Ultra High Speed for HDMI 2.1b modes up to 48 Gbps and Ultra96 for the highest HDMI 2.2 bandwidth modes (HDMI 2.1b overview; HDMI 2.2 overview).
Those standards do not make a newer cable a universal fix. Check the specifications for both the computer’s output and the monitor’s input at your target mode, including any dock or adapter between them. A cable cannot make a 60 Hz-only port or display mode run faster. Consider replacing it only if the cable path is the likely limitation, and choose a certified cable rated for the exact devices and mode.

Check Dynamic Refresh Rate on Windows 11
In Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, inspect the Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) setting if a game appears capped. Microsoft says DRR requires compatible hardware and can limit the maximum refresh rate of some games. Turning it off temporarily can help determine whether it is involved. DRR is a Windows 11 feature; Windows 10 does not support it.
Check the selected monitor and display arrangement
With multiple monitors connected, make sure the display selector is set to the affected screen. Also verify that Windows is using the intended external-display configuration; the selected screen and connection arrangement affect which supported modes are available.

Recheck after updating the graphics driver
If the desired mode is still absent after checking the display, resolution, and connection path, get the graphics driver through Windows Update or the support channel for your computer or graphics-card manufacturer. Then return to Advanced display and check the available modes again. The right driver and instructions depend on the computer and GPU model.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the listed rate still does not match a game
First distinguish the monitor mode Windows has selected from what you see while a game is running. If Windows is set to the desired refresh rate but a game appears capped, check whether DRR is enabled on compatible Windows 11 hardware. If the higher rate is absent from Windows altogether, focus on the display’s supported mode at the selected resolution and the GPU-to-monitor connection path.
