A modded Minecraft crash usually comes from one of four things: the mods don’t match the Minecraft release or mod loader, a required dependency is missing, Java or memory is configured poorly, or two or more mods conflict with each other. The game’s crash report is the quickest way to tell these apart. Read its main stack trace first, check the system details it records, and then verify versions and dependencies before you change anything else.
Start with the crash report, or the latest log
When Minecraft fails with a serious error, it normally writes a crash report. The report begins with a section headed ---- Minecraft Crash Report ----, and Fabric’s crash report documentation identifies the main stack trace in that section as the most important part for finding the primary error. In Fabric’s words: “The stack trace in the ---- Minecraft Crash Report ---- section is the most important in this case, as it contains the main error that caused the crash.” (Fabric Documentation, “Crash Reports”)
Not every failure produces a crash report. If the game closed without one, open the latest log instead. The two are separate files. A crash report is a snapshot of one failure, while the log records the session as it ran, so the log is often where you will find the lines leading up to a silent close.
Where the files are stored
Crash reports sit in a crash-reports folder inside the game directory. The default locations documented by Fabric are:

| Operating system | Default crash report folder |
|---|---|
| Windows | %appdata%\.minecraft\crash-reports |
| macOS | ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/crash-reports |
| Linux | ~/.minecraft/crash-reports |
Logs are kept in a logs folder in the same game directory. The newest one is named latest.log.
Third-party launchers may keep each game instance in its own directory, so these default paths may not apply to you. Check your launcher’s documentation to find the instance folder, then look for crash-reports and logs inside it.

Read the main stack trace without assuming the first mod is guilty
A stack trace is a record of the code the game was running when it failed. Mod names that appear in it show where the failure surfaced. They do not always show where the failure started.
- Find the error line that names what failed. That is the main error, and it is the part worth reading first.
- Note any mod named in the trace. Treat it as a lead to investigate.
- Look for signs that two mods touched the same code or depend on different versions of the same library. Fabric’s example shows a mod appearing in the trace while a compatibility issue between several mods is the real cause.
Removing the first listed mod and declaring the problem solved is a common mistake. If the crash disappears, you have learned that the mod is involved, not necessarily that it is the sole cause. If it does not disappear, the trace has still narrowed the search.

Check the system details the report records
Crash reports include the operating system, the Java version, and the memory allocated to the game. Fabric’s guide calls out these fields specifically because they show whether Java and memory are set up correctly.
- Java version: Confirm that the version the game runs on is one your loader and mods support. Forge’s documentation describes supported Java version ranges for its mod files, so check the requirements of the loader you installed.
- Allocated memory: Compare the value in the report with what your modpack or mod documentation recommends. The guidance reviewed does not establish a universal memory amount, because the right figure depends on the game, the modpack, the launcher, and your computer.
- Operating system: Record it when you ask for help. It helps others reproduce the failure.
Verify versions, loader, edition, and dependencies
Before changing several things at once, confirm that the parts of your setup agree with each other.

- Turn on the Bright Lights: With the built-in RGB lighting, take your gaming experience to the next level by pressing the MSI LED button to cycle through lighting options. Customize lighting even further with MSI Center software.
- Minecraft release: Every mod should target the exact release you run. Fabric warns that a mod built for one Minecraft release may not work on another.
- Mod loader: Fabric mods are not interchangeable with mods written for other loaders, such as Forge. Make sure each mod matches the loader you launch, and check the loader version as well.
- Edition: The official guidance reviewed is written for Minecraft Java Edition. If you play another edition, these loader rules may not apply in the same way.
- Required dependencies: Some mods need another library before they will load. Fabric’s installation guide names Fabric API as a common example. Forge’s documentation also describes required dependencies and load ordering. A missing dependency often appears as a crash that names a class or mod you never installed on purpose.
Narrow down the cause
When two possible causes or fixes compete, compare them on the same points so you can see what actually changed:
- Minecraft release
- Loader and loader version
- Mod and dependency versions
- Java version
- Allocated memory
- Whether the crash still happens with a smaller mod set
The last item is a practical troubleshooting approach rather than an official procedure. Work on a copy of your game folder, not the original. Remove part of the mod list in the copy, launch, and see whether the same crash reproduces. Change one thing at a time so the result is meaningful. Do not conclude that a specific mod is incompatible until you have checked its version against your Minecraft release and loader, and matched that against the report.

What to share when you ask for help
A mod author or support community can only diagnose a crash from evidence. Send them:
- The crash report from your
crash-reportsfolder, orlatest.logif no report was written - Your Minecraft release, mod loader and version, and Java version
- Your full mod list, including versions and any dependencies
Without those items, an exact diagnosis is not possible. No published figure measures how often mod conflicts cause modded crashes, so this guide does not estimate how common any particular cause is.
