Your PS5 is not limited to 100 Mbps. Sony lists 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX and 1000BASE-T (gigabit) Ethernet for both PS5 models. A repeatable result around 90–95 Mbps usually means the wired link negotiated at 100 Mbps somewhere between the console and router—or that the console’s internet test is measuring a slower path to PlayStation services.
Check the router’s negotiated port speed first, then connect the PS5 directly to a known-gigabit router port with a known-good Cat5e or Cat6 cable. That bypass test separates a physical link fault from normal internet-test variation.
The PS5 supports gigabit Ethernet
Sony’s official PS5 FAQ lists 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX and 1000BASE-T. The last standard is gigabit Ethernet, so a 100 Mbps result is not a built-in console ceiling. Gigabit is the port’s maximum link capability, not a promise that every PlayStation download or console test will reach 1 Gbps.
What a real 100 Mbps negotiation looks like
- The PS5 test repeatedly lands near 90–95 Mbps.
- Your router or switch identifies the PS5 port as 100 Mbps or Fast Ethernet.
- Another device on the same service reaches several hundred megabits per second.
- Changing the internet plan does not change the PS5 result.
100 Mbps means megabits per second. A download shown in megabytes per second would display roughly 12.5 MB/s at 100 Mbps before protocol overhead. A gigabit link can still deliver less than 1 Gbps over the internet.

Check the negotiated speed before changing anything
The router or managed switch is usually a better diagnostic source than the PS5 test. Open the device’s connected-device, LAN, Ethernet or port-status page and locate the port used by the console.

Switch LEDs are not universal: manufacturers assign colors differently. Use the administrative link-speed field when available. A gigabit switch automatically negotiates the highest common speed; for example, NETGEAR’s GS605 has 10/100/1000 Mbps ports.
Run the five-minute direct-router test
- Pause downloads, streaming and large transfers on other devices.
- Disconnect the PS5 from its wall jack, switch, mesh node, powerline adapter or MoCA adapter.
- Use a short, factory-made Cat5e or Cat6 cable to connect the PS5 directly to an ordinary LAN port on the main router or gateway.
- Run the PS5 test, then check the router’s port-status page.
- If necessary, repeat with a second LAN port and a second known-good cable.
If the direct connection negotiates at 1 Gbps, the removed cable run or device is responsible. If it remains at 100 Mbps through multiple ports and cables, continue with the console and router checks below.

Inspect every part of the normal path
The complete path is PS5 → cable → wall jack or switch → router/gateway → modem or ONT → ISP. Gigabit requires all four twisted pairs, so one damaged conductor pair, plug, jack or punch-down can still allow 100 Mbps while preventing 1 Gbps. A Cat5e or Cat6 label does not prove that a cable is undamaged.
Cable and connectors
Replace the PS5 patch cable first. Avoid couplers, passive splitters, flat bargain cables and questionable terminations while testing. If the cable works at gigabit on a laptop, that is useful evidence but does not completely rule out a marginal PS5 socket or a fault triggered by bending or insertion.
Router or gateway port
Try each ordinary LAN port. Older or ISP-supplied gateways may mix port capabilities or have a port configured for a special purpose. Confirm auto-negotiation or gigabit operation in the device documentation rather than assuming every socket is identical.

Switches and adapters
Verify that any switch is gigabit, not 10/100, and replace both the router-to-switch and switch-to-PS5 cables. Test directly at the router before buying equipment. Mesh nodes, powerline units and MoCA adapters can also have 100 Mbps ports or a slower backhaul.
Wall jacks and in-wall wiring
If direct connection is fast but the wall jack is slow, inspect both wall plates, the patch panel and each punch-down. A loose or incomplete termination can leave one pair unavailable. A temporary loose cable from the router to the PS5 confirms whether the installed run is the culprit.

Use Sony’s documented setup flow:
- Open Settings.
- Select Network, then Settings.
- Choose Set Up Internet Connection.
- Select Set Up Wired LAN, then Connect.
To retest, open Settings → Network → Connection Status → Test Internet Connection. If the existing wired profile behaves abnormally, delete or forget it when that option is offered, recreate it, restart the router and PS5, install available system updates, and test while other traffic is idle. Recreating a profile cannot repair a damaged pair or a bad socket.

When the PS5 test is slow but the link is 1 Gbps
The built-in test measures an end-to-end route to PlayStation services, not just the cable to your router. Server load, routing, ISP congestion, active downloads and other household traffic can lower the displayed number. Sony advises testing with bandwidth-heavy devices idle in its network guidance.
- Compare another device on the same router port and cable.
- Test at different times with downloads and streaming paused.
- Check router QoS, parental controls, traffic shaping and security features.
- Compare wired and Wi-Fi results, while remembering that Wi-Fi performance varies with interference and distance.
If the router consistently reports 1 Gbps, do not interpret one fluctuating PlayStation result as proof of a 100 Mbps Ethernet link. The ISP normally cannot force the local PS5 port to negotiate exactly 100 Mbps.

PlayStation supports IPv6 but not an IPv6-only network. If your router is configured for IPv6-only, enable IPv4 as well using Sony’s internet-connection instructions. This explains connection failures, not usually a stable 90–95 Mbps Ethernet result.

When to suspect the PS5 LAN port
Escalate to possible console hardware trouble only after confirming gigabit-capable router ports, testing directly at the router, trying multiple known-good Cat5e/Cat6 cables and ports, and verifying that another device reaches gigabit on the same path. Inspect the PS5 socket for debris, a loose fit, a plug that will not latch or damage from pulling and sharp bends.
Do not open the console unless you accept warranty and repair risks. For an unresolved case, use PlayStation’s official status and support route.
What not to buy or change first
- Do not upgrade the internet plan before confirming the local link.
- Do not buy a 2.5G or 10G switch to unlock PS5 speed; the documented PS5 interface is gigabit. Such hardware is justified only for a wider multi-device network upgrade.
- Do not treat a premium “gaming” cable as automatically better than a properly made Cat5e or Cat6 patch cable.
- Do not change DNS or configure port forwarding for a physical Ethernet negotiation problem.
- Do not replace the router unless its port is confirmed defective or limited to 100 Mbps.

Spend money only when the test justifies it
A known-good Cat5e/Cat6 cable is the sensible first purchase or borrow. If you need additional wired ports, a basic unmanaged gigabit switch such as NETGEAR’s GS305v3 or GS605v5 is appropriate; neither repairs faulty wall wiring or a PS5 socket. A 2.5G model listed in NETGEAR’s five-port range is a broader network-upgrade choice, not a required PS5 fix.
