Roblox’s official material does not name a single cause for this symptom, so the fastest route is to narrow it down by scope and input source before you change any settings or hardware.
First, confirm the avatar is actually moving
A camera that swings can make a stationary avatar look like it is walking. Roblox’s in-experience help explains that Follow camera mode rotates with the avatar as it moves, so a rotating view alone does not prove the character is moving. Pick a fixed landmark on screen, then stop giving any input and watch whether the avatar’s position changes relative to that landmark. If the avatar stays put and only the view turns, the problem is the camera setting rather than character movement. Check whether it happens in one experience or everywhere
Scope is the most useful early split. Leave the experience, open a different one, and see whether the same thing happens. The pattern you observe points to different next steps:

Test one input source at a time
Change only one variable per test. If you change several things at once, you will not know which one made the difference.
Gamepad
Disconnect the controller completely, then play for a few minutes with no input. Roblox’s Creator Hub documents Thumbstick1 as generally associated with character movement, so a stick that is held, worn or reading input can keep the avatar walking. If the movement stops with the controller off, reconnect it and check again to confirm the link. Roblox’s Gamepad input documentation describes the controls developers can bind, and the broader Input page covers how input is handled.

Touchscreen
Look for a finger resting on the movement control, a control that stayed active after a menu or pop-up, or a case that presses the screen edge. Lift all fingers, wait a few seconds, and see whether the avatar keeps moving. This is a practical diagnostic check, not a cause Roblox documents for touch input.
Keyboard
Press and release each movement key you normally use. A key held down by an object on the desk, a worn key switch or a stuck modifier can keep the avatar moving after you have let go. Clean the area around the keys and retest. If the movement continues with no key pressed, the keyboard is not the source and the next step is to check the experience and the app.

If you play on a phone or tablet
If the symptom appears across experiences on a mobile device, work through the app steps one at a time. Retest after each step so you know which one, if any, resolved it.
- Force-close the Roblox app completely, then reopen it and test the same experience.
- Restart the device, then test again.
- Reinstall the Roblox app, then test again.
Roblox’s iOS App: Technical Issues and Android App: Technical and Purchasing Issues pages list these general steps. Before you report the problem, note your device model and operating system version. If you need to confirm your device meets Roblox’s minimum requirements, check the Roblox Mobile System Requirements page, since minimum OS versions can change over time. Compatibility does not explain unexpected movement on its own.

When and how to report it
If the movement continues after these tests, report it with enough detail for someone to reproduce it. Include:
- What happens, described as the avatar moving, not just the camera turning
- When it started and whether it follows a recent change to your device, app or settings
- Whether it occurs in one experience or in all of them, with the experience name for the single-experience case
- Your device, operating system version and input method, including whether a gamepad was connected
- The exact steps that reproduce the movement
Roblox’s glitch guidance states: “If you find a glitch, make a post on the DevForum following the guidelines.” — Roblox Support, What Should I Do If I Find a Glitch on Roblox? For account, device or general support, Roblox provides a form through its Contact Us page. Roblox also advises checking its Status page for platform or play issues before assuming the problem is on your side.

What the official sources do and do not establish
Roblox’s documentation does not identify a single cause for unexpected character movement, and it does not say that a controller is defective. Developer documentation on default input bindings explains which controls are normally used for movement, but it does not diagnose an individual player’s device. For that reason, do not replace a controller, touchscreen accessory or other hardware unless your own tests show a hardware input problem. If the symptom is confined to one experience, the cause is more likely to sit in that experience than in your device settings, and the report is the right route.
Roblox’s own guidance does not provide a prevalence figure for this symptom, so there is no published rate to compare your experience against.
