What’s actually slowing this PC down?

When Roblox chat disappears, the cause is usually one of four things: the account has not completed an age check, a communication setting or parental control is switched off, the specific experience has chat turned off, or the chat tab on the home screen has changed during a regional rollout. Each has different gates, so the fastest fix starts with identifying which chat is missing.
Identify which chat is missing
Roblox has more than one kind of chat, and each is controlled separately. Use the table below to match the symptom to the likely cause before changing any settings.
| Chat type | Where you see it | What controls it |
|---|---|---|
| Experience chat (in-game) | Inside one experience, opened with the slash key or the chat icon | The experience developer must enable chat; the account must have an age check; the Experience chat setting must be on |
| Friends chat (home screen) | The Chat tab, or the Party tab in regions where the rename has not yet reached your account | Age group, privacy settings and region; the age check must be complete |
| Direct chat | Private messages between users | Age check, communication settings and parental consent where it applies; the exact age thresholds are discussed below |
If chat is missing in every experience and on the home screen, start with the age check. If only one game lacks chat, the problem is almost certainly that experience’s configuration.
Chat is missing in one experience
Roblox states that Experience chat opens only when the experience developer has enabled it. A game with no chat option may be working as designed, and no account setting will bring it back. To check:

- Launch the experience and open the in-game menu.
- Look for a chat window. If it is available, open it with the slash key (/) or the chat icon.
- If the chat window does not open on an international keyboard layout, try the backslash key (\).
- If none of these work, and chat is absent from other experiences too, move to the age-check and settings checks below.
The backslash workaround only addresses a keyboard input problem in an experience where chat is already enabled. It cannot restore chat that an age check, an account setting, a region or the developer has turned off.
Chat is missing on the home screen
Friends chat is the home-screen conversation feature. Roblox says that users over 9 may see a Chat tab in place of the Party tab as the change rolls out by region. Users under 9 continue to see Party. Check the interface first:
- Mobile: the friend-chat tab is at the bottom of the home screen.
- Computer browser: look for the gray chat box in the lower-right corner.
If you see a Party tab and no Chat tab, the rename may simply not have reached your account or region yet. Access still depends on age group, privacy settings and region, so an absent tab is not proof that the feature is gone.

The age check gates every chat type
Roblox’s official support article on age checks states that all users must complete an age check to use communication features, including Experience chat and Friends chat. Its support text puts it plainly: “Roblox requires age checks for users to access chat features.” This is a sentence from Roblox’s official support article, not a quote from a named individual.

Roblox currently lists two age-check methods:
- Facial age estimation, available to all users who meet the other requirements.
- ID verification, which is available only to users 13 and older.
Roblox says it may prompt another age check if it detects a discrepancy in the age on your account. Complete any check only through Roblox’s own account flow. Chat cannot be turned on in settings until the age check is finished, so if the Communication toggles are missing or greyed out, this is the first thing to confirm.

For a parent managing a child’s account
A parent can manage a child’s communication through Settings → Parental Controls → Settings You Manage → Communication → Experience chat. This requires that the parent account is linked to the child’s account. Without a link, the parent cannot see or change these controls.

Parental communication controls do not apply to chat features built independently by developers, according to the same overview. A child may therefore find chat missing in one game for a reason that has nothing to do with the parent’s settings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The consent ages on Roblox’s pages do not match
Roblox’s two main chat pages give different parental-consent thresholds. The newer “How to chat on Roblox” article says users aged 5 to 9 need parental consent for Experience chat, and users under 16 need parental consent for Direct chat. The Parental Controls Overview says users under 9 need consent for Game chat, and users under 13 need consent for Game direct chat.
These official pages are inconsistent, and neither should be treated as a universal rule. The controls displayed on your account are the reliable reference for your age and region. If the displayed controls conflict with either article, contact Roblox Support rather than guessing which page is current.

If none of these explain it
Work through this order and stop when the problem matches:
- Confirm whether the missing chat is Experience chat in one game, or friend chat on the home screen.
- For a single game, check whether that experience’s in-game menu offers chat at all.
- For all games, confirm the age check is complete and check the Experience chat toggle under Communication.
- For a child’s account, confirm the parent account is linked and check the parental Communication settings.
- For the home screen, confirm which tab your region and age group show.
- If the toggles and tabs look correct but chat still does not work, contact Roblox Support and include the chat type, your age-check status and the experience name.
Roblox updates its interface and regional rollouts over time, so these labels and locations were checked against Roblox’s official support pages as of 2026-10-08 and may have changed since.
