Xbox Game Bar recording usually fails because Game Bar is disabled, the selected window is not a suitable capture target, a shortcut is being intercepted, or Windows permissions, audio, storage, app files, drivers, or overlays are interfering. Start with a normal game or app, press Windows + G, open Capture, and try the on-screen Record button. If that works, the recorder is fine and the keyboard shortcut is the problem. If it does not, follow the fixes below in order.
Microsoft documents Game Bar for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Its standard recording shortcut is Windows + Alt + R; recordings are MP4 files normally saved under VideosCaptures. See Microsoft’s Xbox Game Bar recording instructions.
First, identify which failure you have
| Symptom | Likely cause | First action |
|---|---|---|
Win + G does nothing |
Game Bar is disabled, blocked, missing, or broken | Enable Game Bar in Settings, then restart Windows |
| Game Bar opens but Record is unavailable | Unsupported target or a Capture widget problem | Test inside a normal game or app and open Capture |
The button works but Win + Alt + R does not |
Keyboard or overlay conflict | Use the button, then check remapping utilities and overlays |
| Recording stops immediately | Storage, driver, app, target, or overlay conflict | Check disk space and disable competing overlays |
| Video has no microphone | Microphone toggle or privacy permission | Check microphone settings and press Win + Alt + M |
| Video has no system audio | Capture-audio setting, muted app, or wrong output device | Review Game Bar Capturing and Windows volume settings |
| The file is missing | Redirected folder, failed save, or disconnected destination | Search for recent MP4 files and inspect VideosCaptures |
| Only one game fails | Game compatibility, anti-cheat, fullscreen, or protected content | Try borderless mode and another game |
Run the two-minute recording test
- Open a normal game or desktop application. Do not begin on the desktop, in File Explorer, inside a protected video window, or on a security prompt.
- Press Windows + G. If Game Bar does not appear, skip to Enable Game Bar.
- Open the Capture widget and select Record. This separates a capture-engine problem from a hotkey problem.
- Press Windows + Alt + R to start and press it again to stop. Windows + Alt + M toggles the microphone, and Windows + Alt + Print Screen takes a screenshot.
- Open VideosCaptures and look for a new MP4. If your Videos folder is redirected, search the PC for
*.mp4sorted by date modified.
Enable Game Bar and verify the shortcut
Open Settings, search for Xbox Game Bar, and turn on the option that allows Game Bar to open and record game clips. Then press Windows + G and test the Capture widget.
If the widget records but the hotkey does not, check whether a laptop utility, gaming mode, PowerToys, AutoHotkey, remote-desktop software, or keyboard-management app has remapped the Windows key or Windows + Alt + R. Test with the physical Windows key and temporarily close those utilities. A third-party overlay can intercept the combination even when Game Bar itself is healthy.

Make sure the target can be captured
Game Bar is designed primarily for a game or app, not as a universal desktop recorder. Some desktop surfaces, File Explorer, administrator prompts, protected video, DRM-controlled content, and certain exclusive-fullscreen or anti-cheat configurations may be rejected. Try a standard game window or ordinary application first. If that works, the original target—not the recorder—is the limitation.
For the entire desktop or a selected region, use a tool intended for that job instead of repeatedly repairing Game Bar. Microsoft describes Windows 11’s Snipping Tool as a way to select an area before recording.
Fix missing system audio or microphone audio
Configure Game Bar capture audio
Press Windows + G, open Settings, choose Capturing, and set audio capture to include the source you want, such as all system audio. Check Windows’ volume mixer to ensure the game is not muted and that sound is routed to the intended headset or speakers.
Enable the microphone separately
During recording, press Windows + Alt + M. If the microphone track is still silent, check the headset’s physical mute switch, the selected input device, and its per-app input level.

Check Windows 11 microphone privacy
Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone and turn on Microphone access, Let apps access your microphone, and, where shown, Let desktop apps access your microphone. Microsoft explains the distinction between Store apps and desktop apps in its microphone troubleshooting guidance. These permissions normally affect narration, not whether a video is created.
Check background permissions, storage, and the save path
Allow Game Bar to run in the background
On Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Xbox Game Bar, open Advanced options, and avoid setting its background permission to Never while testing. Windows 10 uses different labels and builds; Microsoft documents the general background-app controls here.
Verify the destination
- Open VideosCaptures manually and sort by date modified.
- Search for recent
.mp4files if the folder is empty. - Check whether Videos is redirected to OneDrive or another drive.
- Confirm that the destination drive is connected and writable.
- Free space on the system and destination drives; Microsoft does not specify a universal minimum for every Windows build.
Restart, then update Windows and Store apps
Close Game Bar, restart Windows, and test again. If the problem remains, install available updates under Settings > Windows Update. Open Microsoft Store > Library and select Get updates. Microsoft recommends this sequence for malfunctioning Store-delivered apps; see its Store-app troubleshooting steps.
Windows 10 instructions remain useful for existing PCs, but normal Microsoft support and security updates ended on October 14, 2025. Separate support arrangements can change that status. Do not assume that moving to Windows 11 automatically fixes Game Bar; hardware and edition requirements still apply.

Repair or reset Xbox Game Bar
On Windows 11, go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Xbox Game Bar, select its three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, restart the PC, and test recording.
- If it still fails, return to the same page and select Reset.
Repair attempts to fix the app without removing its data. Reset is more aggressive and can clear app preferences or data. Back up important recordings first; MP4 files in the Captures folder are separate from the app’s settings, but the destination should still be checked afterward. Microsoft describes these recovery controls in its app-repair guidance. Windows 10 generally uses Settings > Apps > Apps & features, although labels vary by build.

If recording fails in one game, or began after a graphics update, test the capture path before making invasive changes:
- Switch exclusive fullscreen to windowed or borderless mode.
- Temporarily disable NVIDIA, AMD Adrenalin, Steam, Discord, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner, and other capture overlays.
- Close other recording tools and test again.
- Update the GPU driver from the PC or GPU manufacturer’s official site. If the failure started immediately after an update, consider rolling back to the prior driver instead.
- Test a second game and a normal application to separate a game-specific failure from a system-wide one.
These are troubleshooting measures, not guarantees. Microsoft’s general update guidance recommends obtaining hardware drivers from the manufacturer; see its update troubleshooting page.

Check policy, sign-in, and app state
Close and reopen Game Bar, restart Windows, and sign in to Microsoft Store with the account used for Store apps. On a school- or work-managed PC, an administrator policy or security product may disable Xbox-related apps, background activity, microphones, or overlays. Test a local, non-protected application. If widgets fail while Game Bar opens, repair or reset the app before attempting registry edits or unofficial re-registration scripts.
Reinstall only after the safer fixes
If updating, repairing, resetting, and conflict testing do not help, reinstall Xbox Game Bar through Microsoft Store when it is available. Restart afterward, recheck the enablement setting, and test the shortcut. Avoid random “Game Bar repair” downloads, registry deletions, debloat scripts, and PowerShell commands copied from unverified sites; they can damage Store-app registrations and vary across Windows versions.
When another recorder is the better solution
| Need | Better fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Quick clips from a supported game or app | Xbox Game Bar | Fast and built in, but limited target and audio controls |
| Selected desktop region | Snipping Tool | Simple Windows 11 workflow, not a full gaming-overlay replacement |
| Recording plus trimming, webcam, or presentation editing | Clipchamp | Editor-oriented workflow rather than one-key game clips; see Microsoft Clipchamp |
| Scenes, multiple sources, advanced audio, or streaming | OBS Studio | Free and powerful, but requires manual source, encoder, audio, and folder setup |
Microsoft lists Snipping Tool and Clipchamp as Windows screen-recording alternatives in its guidance on recording tools: screen-recording alternatives.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Xbox Game Bar record one game but not another?
The failing game may use exclusive fullscreen, anti-cheat, a conflicting overlay, or protected content. Try borderless or windowed mode, disable other overlays, and test another capture target.
Does resetting Xbox Game Bar delete my recorded videos?
Reset clears app data or preferences, while recordings are normally separate MP4 files in VideosCaptures. Back up important files and verify the folder after resetting.
What shortcut turns the Game Bar microphone on?
Press Windows + Alt + M during recording.
The Bottom Line
Test a supported game or app with the Capture widget first, then check Game Bar enablement, audio and privacy settings, storage, updates, app repair, and overlay or driver conflicts—in that order. Switch to Snipping Tool, Clipchamp, or OBS Studio when you need desktop, region, editing, or advanced multi-source capture.
