If your Xbox is stuck on “Signing in,” first check whether Xbox services are having an outage. If services are working, the cause is more likely to be a network or authentication handoff, a Microsoft account or local profile issue, or an incomplete update. Work through the steps below in order: the early checks do not erase installed games, and a reset should be a last resort.
Check what is stuck before troubleshooting
These steps are for an Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S console. Note whether you see a spinner, a blank screen, “Use another device,” a QR-code prompt, or a sign-in screen that returns to Home. Also check whether the problem affects every account or only one, and whether the Xbox dashboard itself works.
If the console signs in but one game does not, skip to the game-specific checks. If the problem is in the Xbox app on Windows, use the separate Windows steps; console instructions such as removing a console profile will not repair the PC app.

1. Check Xbox service status
Visit the official Xbox status page before changing account settings or resetting the console. An issue with Xbox profile or sign-in services can make a healthy console appear frozen. A successful login at Microsoft.com does not prove that Xbox’s console authentication services are working: they are related, but not the same sign-in path. Xbox Support has also acknowledged incidents affecting sign-in and account creation, so a service-side problem is a real possibility.

If the status page reports an incident, wait for Microsoft to resolve it and try again later. Avoid repeatedly entering your password or resetting the console while a service problem is active. If there is no reported incident, continue.
2. Power-cycle the console
A full power cycle can clear a stalled session or temporary system state. It is not the same as deleting the profile, and it does not guarantee that every kind of stored data or cache has been cleared.
- Hold the Xbox power button on the console for about 10 seconds, until it turns off.
- Unplug the power cable and wait at least 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the cable, turn on the console, and try signing in again.
If the Xbox still hangs, move on. A power cycle cannot unlock an account, repair a failed update, or resolve an Xbox outage.

A console can show that it is connected to Wi-Fi yet still fail to reach the services needed to finish authentication. Router filtering, parental controls, DNS problems, captive portals, unstable Wi-Fi, NAT or firewall restrictions, or an ISP issue can interrupt that path.

- In the console’s network settings, run its connection tests. Check both general network access and the connection to Xbox services, if those tests are offered by your dashboard.
- Restart the router. If possible, connect the Xbox by Ethernet and try again.
- As a short diagnostic test, try another network, such as a mobile hotspot. If sign-in works there but not on your home network, investigate the router, DNS, filtering, or ISP path. A hotspot is a comparison, not proof of one specific fault or a recommended permanent connection.
- Hotel, school, workplace, and other public Wi-Fi networks may require a browser-based approval that a console cannot display or complete normally.
Now test the account. Open a private or incognito browser window and sign in at Microsoft account using the exact address associated with the Xbox profile. Complete any security verification. If you cannot sign in there, use Microsoft’s Sign-in Helper before troubleshooting the console further.
Check for a recently changed password, an unfinished authenticator or two-step verification prompt, a locked account, a passwordless or passkey flow that did not complete, or a child account that needs an organizer’s approval. Make sure you are using the correct Microsoft account; an Xbox profile and its purchases are tied to that account. Do not disable two-factor authentication or other account security to get around a stuck console sign-in.
4. Remove and add the Xbox profile again
Try this when Xbox services are operating, the account works in a browser, and the console has a working network connection—especially if one account loops back to Home while another account can sign in. Do not remove the profile if you do not know its credentials or cannot complete its verification prompts.
- Open Profile & system > Settings > Account > Remove accounts. Labels can vary with dashboard version and language.
- Select and remove the affected profile.
- Restart the console.
- Add the account again and sign in with the correct Microsoft account and security method.
Removing a profile from the console does not delete the Microsoft account or its purchases; you can download the profile again. You will need to sign in again to use it on this console. For related account-management help, see Xbox Support’s account-on-console guidance.

If the QR code or “Use another device” handoff is stuck
The phone or browser can approve a login without the console successfully receiving or applying the result. If the TV remains on the spinner after approval, do not assume the password is wrong.
- Confirm the phone or browser is signing in to the same Microsoft account you intend to use on the Xbox.
- Complete the approval flow all the way through; do not stop after entering a code or approving a prompt.
- If scanning fails, enter the displayed code manually. Try the controller sign-in option if available.
- Try an up-to-date browser or a different phone. If the approval page will not complete, temporarily disable extensions that block scripts, pop-ups, or cookies.
- Check that both devices are online, then restart the console and try the handoff again.
If the browser says approval succeeded but the TV remains stuck, the issue may be the console’s local sign-in state, its network path, or Xbox services. Recheck service status and, if services are up and the account works elsewhere, try removing and re-adding the profile.
Check for a pending console update
An incomplete or interrupted system update can cause sign-in or setup problems, particularly after a long period offline, a power loss during an update, or initial setup of a new console. Check the console’s system update settings, install any available update, and restart when prompted. If the console is enrolled in Xbox Insider preview software, mention that when seeking help; preview software can introduce issues that differ from the retail system.

That process requires a Windows PC and a USB drive, and the update package must match Microsoft’s current instructions; do not use a package or file name from an old guide. An offline update is not the same as a factory reset. If the console shows an E-code, record it and look it up in the Xbox error-code guide before proceeding.

If the Xbox app on Windows is stuck signing in
These steps apply to the Windows app, not an Xbox console. A working browser connection does not guarantee that the app’s Xbox authentication path is healthy. Windows-side causes can include an outdated app, Microsoft Store problem, Gaming Services issue, or network configuration.
- Sign in to Microsoft Store and the Xbox app with the intended account. Check that it is the account linked to your Xbox profile.
- Install available Windows, Xbox app, Gaming Services, and Microsoft Store updates, then restart the PC.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Xbox > Advanced options. Choose Repair first. If that does not help, try Reset, then restart and sign in again.
- If Gaming Services has an Advanced options page on your Windows installation, try Repair and then Reset there as well.
Microsoft Q&A discussions mention Gaming Services, Xbox Networking, Store updates, and app repair or reset as possible areas to investigate, not universal fixes. See the example discussion. Avoid unverified registry edits, token-folder deletion, or PowerShell removal commands: they can complicate Store app registration and are not a safe first step.

A game-specific sign-in failure is different from a console profile stuck at the dashboard. Check whether the Xbox profile is signed in, whether other games launch, and whether the affected game has an update or a service issue of its own. Confirm that the account has the required game ownership or subscription entitlement. If the game is digital, licensing or the console’s Home Xbox setting may be relevant; a disc and digital copy can fail differently.
For an Xbox 360 backward-compatible game, downloading or authenticating an Xbox 360 profile can be a separate issue from signing in to the current Xbox dashboard. First confirm that the Microsoft account and Xbox services are accessible. Do not repeatedly delete an Xbox 360 profile without confirming you can download it again.

Reset only after the less disruptive checks fail
If the account works in a browser, services are up, the console has been tested on another network, and removing and re-adding the profile and checking for updates have not helped, consider a reset. Before starting, record any error code and ensure the console will not lose power during the process.
Choose Reset and keep my games & apps if available. It refreshes the console software and removes accounts and settings while retaining installed games and apps. You will need to sign in again and may need to restore settings. It does not promise to preserve every local configuration or unsynchronized save.
Reset and remove everything is the more destructive option: it removes local accounts, settings, installed games and apps, and local data. Cloud-synchronized saves can normally be restored after you sign in, but a save that never synchronized may be lost. Do not choose this as an early troubleshooting step.

When to contact Xbox Support
Contact Xbox Support if the console cannot finish setup or updates, displays recurring system errors, freezes with multiple accounts on multiple networks, or remains stuck after a keep-games-and-apps reset. Repeated shutdowns, boot or storage errors, or failure across accounts and networks may point to a console software or hardware fault rather than a password problem. Include the exact screen, any error code, whether another account works, and which networks you tested. Use the error-code search for a displayed code.
