YouTube Live supports 4K (2160p) ingest, so a stream showing a maximum of 1080p does not prove that YouTube has imposed a universal 1080p cap. The first things to check are what resolution your source produces, what your encoder actually sends, and whether the selected YouTube stream key has a manual resolution limit.
Trace where the stream drops to 1080p
Work from the signal source toward YouTube. A 4K-capable camera or game does not guarantee a 4K live stream: the encoder’s outgoing resolution is what matters. YouTube says it normally detects the encoder’s resolution and frame rate automatically. A custom stream key can instead allow manual resolution settings.
- Confirm the source output. Check the camera, game capture, or desktop scene’s actual output resolution. Make sure it is 3840×2160, not merely that the source device supports 4K.
- Check the encoder output resolution. In your streaming software or hardware encoder, inspect the output or streaming resolution—not just the canvas, preview, or source resolution. Set it to 3840×2160 if the encoder and the rest of the setup support it.
- Inspect the selected YouTube stream key. In YouTube Studio’s live control room, check which stream key the encoder is using. YouTube recommends automatic resolution detection by default. If you use a custom key, inspect its stream-resolution setting and whether “Turn on manual settings” is enabled; a manual choice may be limiting the stream to 1080p. YouTube documents the automatic-detection behavior in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Verify that the encoder is sending the intended output. Check the encoder’s live output information and YouTube’s stream health while transmitting. If the encoder reports 1080p, investigate its settings or device limits before changing YouTube settings.
Check the live protocol, codec, and keyframes
Resolution is only one part of a compatible ingest signal. YouTube’s live guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. Choose a combination your encoder supports and is actually sending; do not assume a codec selected in a menu is active unless the outgoing stream confirms it.
- Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: Use a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube specifies a maximum interval of four seconds.
- Protocol and codec: Confirm the encoder’s output uses a supported protocol and codec combination. Device-specific limits vary, so check the current manufacturer documentation for your encoder.
These settings can affect whether the ingest works reliably, but changing codec or keyframe interval alone will not turn a 1080p encoder output into 4K.

Set bitrate for the resolution, frame rate, and codec
Use YouTube’s live encoder table for the specific codec and frame rate you are sending. In its English live guidance accessed October 3, 2026, YouTube recommends the following H.264 bitrates for 2160p ingest:
| Live output | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 2160p at 30 fps | 30 Mbps |
| 2160p at 60 fps | 35 Mbps |
Those figures are for live ingest using H.264. YouTube publishes separate bitrate ranges for AV1 and H.265/HEVC; consult its current live encoder settings table rather than applying the H.264 values to another codec. The figures are not upload recommendations: YouTube’s separate upload guidance lists 35–45 Mbps for 4K standard-frame-rate video and 53–68 Mbps for high-frame-rate video. Those numbers apply to uploads, not live-stream configuration; see recommended upload encoding settings.

Setting a high bitrate does not make a lower-resolution output 4K. First verify the outgoing resolution, then select a suitable bitrate for the codec and frame rate.
Make sure the upload connection can carry the stream
A connection that cannot sustain the outgoing bitrate can cause instability and poor stream health. Run an upload-speed test under conditions similar to the event, account for the stream’s total bitrate, and leave headroom. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom and says to account for both primary and backup stream bitrates when applicable. Its live streaming tips also recommend testing with audio and movement similar to the actual program before going live.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Prefer a stable connection over a higher but inconsistent speed-test result.
- Include audio and any backup stream in the total bandwidth you plan for.
- Before the event, send a test with similar motion and audio, then monitor YouTube’s stream health.
- If stream health degrades, reduce competing network traffic or resolve the connection issue before assuming YouTube is imposing a resolution cap.
Account for the 4K latency limitation
YouTube does not offer its low-latency option for 4K/2160p live streams; 4K uses normal latency. If an event depends on low delay—for example, interactive gameplay or live audience participation—weigh that trade-off against the benefit of 4K before choosing the output resolution. The available modes and current settings are described in YouTube’s live encoder guidance.
Do not treat HDR as a fix for an SDR resolution cap
HDR live streaming is a separate workflow, not a general remedy for an SDR stream limited to 1080p. YouTube’s HDR instructions specify HLS output, HEVC, 10-bit video, and compatible HDR color metadata. Only follow those requirements when you are deliberately setting up an HDR stream; see YouTube’s HDR live-stream instructions.

When to consider different hardware
Do not buy a camera, capture card, computer, or encoder solely because YouTube displays 1080p. First establish whether the source, encoder output, selected key settings, and upload connection are configured for 2160p. Consider replacing or adding an encoder only if your current device cannot send a suitable 2160p stream after those checks. Compare the device’s supported maximum resolution and frame rate, codecs and protocols, bitrate range, latency options, and HDR needs against your actual production requirements.
Quick troubleshooting by symptom
- The source is 4K but the encoder reports 1080p: Change the encoder’s streaming output resolution, if supported, and check whether any output or scaling setting is limiting it.
- The encoder reports 4K but YouTube is set to a manual 1080p resolution: Check the custom stream key’s manual resolution setting; use automatic detection if appropriate for your setup.
- The 4K stream starts but stream health is poor: Verify the chosen codec and bitrate, use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and test whether the upload connection has the recommended headroom.
- You need low latency: YouTube’s low-latency option is unavailable for 4K, so choose between normal-latency 4K and a lower-resolution mode that meets the event’s interaction needs.
- You are following an HDR guide for an SDR stream: Return to the SDR resolution and encoder checks; HDR’s HLS, HEVC, 10-bit, and metadata requirements are for HDR workflows.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded gameplay, a tournament broadcast, or another recording looping as a YouTube Live stream, StreamNeo runs that playback in the cloud rather than relying on a home computer to stay on. It is not a camera-based live production tool; you upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a 4K source guarantee that YouTube receives 4K?
No. The encoder must send a 2160p output; a 4K-capable source may still be scaled or encoded at 1080p.
Can I use YouTube’s low-latency mode with a 4K live stream?
No. YouTube’s low-latency option is unavailable for 2160p streams.
