A black screen is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Find the first place the picture disappears: in your encoder, in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview, on the public watch page, or on one viewer’s device. That tells you which part of the stream to check first—and helps avoid changing the wrong setting or buying hardware you may not need.
First, find where the picture goes black
Compare the image at each stage of the stream. Check the video or scene in your encoder, then check YouTube’s Live Control Room preview, and finally check the public watch page. YouTube advises waiting for the stream preview to appear in Live Control Room before clicking Go live: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
| Where the image first goes black | What to investigate first |
|---|---|
| In the encoder | The selected video source or scene, its routing and enabled status, and encoder errors or load. |
| In Live Control Room, although the encoder looks correct | The stream delivery path, YouTube’s stream status, and any content notices in Studio. |
| On the watch page, although the preview looks correct | Whether the stream is reaching viewers correctly, and whether the issue affects multiple viewers or connections. |
| Only on one viewer’s device | That viewer’s browser or app, device, and connection. |
These are clues, not proof of a particular fault. The stage where the image first disappears is more useful than the fact that the stream is about relaxation content; the title alone cannot establish a specific cause.
If the encoder itself shows black
Start with the image source, not with replacement equipment. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance identifies incorrectly routed audio or video sources as a possible reason the encoder output looks poor, and recommends checking encoder errors and CPU use. It also suggests reviewing a local archive, if you are recording one, and trying another encoder if the checks do not reveal a problem: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Confirm the intended source or scene is selected. Make sure the video file, media source, capture source, or scene you expect is actually routed to the live output and is enabled. If you switch scenes, check that the new scene contains a visible source.
- Check the source independently. If possible, preview or play the source directly. For a prerecorded relaxation video, confirm that the file itself displays an image and is not paused, positioned on a black section, or unavailable to the encoder.
- Check encoder status and load. Look for errors on the encoder’s live dashboard and check whether the computer’s CPU is heavily loaded. Update the encoder software, then recheck its output.
- Review a local recording if one exists. A recording can help distinguish a problem in the source or encoder output from one that occurs later in delivery. It is only useful if it captures the relevant stream output.
- Try another encoder only after checking the source path. YouTube lists this as a troubleshooting option when the preceding checks do not identify the issue; it is not evidence by itself that your current encoder is defective.
If the encoder preview is already black, changing a viewer’s browser or buying a capture device is unlikely to be the right first step. Establish that a specific source device is faulty before considering replacement hardware.
If the encoder looks right but YouTube’s preview or stream does not
A correct encoder picture shifts attention to delivery and YouTube’s handling of the stream. In Live Control Room, wait for the preview and review the stream status before going live. Then compare the preview with the public watch page. YouTube’s setup and monitoring guidance is in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Check upload capacity and connection reliability
Test the connection used by the encoder for outbound speed and stability. YouTube recommends leaving upload headroom: “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available. Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” The 20% figure is YouTube’s recommendation for spare bandwidth, not a statistic about how often black screens occur. See Streaming tips.
A disrupted connection can interfere with delivery even when the encoder’s local picture is fine. Compare what you see on the watch page from more than one device or connection. Reports from viewers on different internet connections can be a clue to an encoder issue, according to YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance, but that pattern alone does not prove the cause.

Check Studio for content notices
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. Its guidance says that when third-party content is identified, “a placeholder image may replace your live stream.” If the content remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. Check YouTube Studio for notices and make sure you have the necessary rights and permissions for music and visuals in a relaxation stream. A black or placeholder image by itself does not prove that YouTube detected a copyright match. Read Copyright issues with live streams.
If viewers see black but your preview looks normal
Check the public watch page, then compare reports from viewers using different devices and connections. If only one person is affected, have them reopen the app or browser, try another supported device or browser, and check whether other videos play. YouTube’s viewer guidance recommends testing another supported device: Troubleshoot streaming & video issues.

If several viewers on independent connections report the same problem, investigate the stream and encoder path rather than treating it as one viewer’s playback issue. If reports are limited to one network, that is a useful clue, but not a definitive diagnosis. Network congestion and other playback factors can affect live programming.

- Check the encoder image. If it is black, inspect the source, scene routing, encoder status, and load.
- Check Live Control Room. Wait for the preview and review stream status; do not assume a correct local preview guarantees a correct viewer-facing stream.
- Check the public watch page. Compare it with the preview and ask whether one viewer or multiple viewers on different connections are affected.
- Check the connection. Test outbound speed and reliability, leaving the bandwidth headroom YouTube recommends.
- Check Studio notices. Look for content-related notices before concluding that a black image is a copyright action.
- Use viewer-side checks for isolated reports. Try another supported device or browser and reopen the app or browser.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your relaxation stream uses uploaded prerecorded video and you want it to keep looping without leaving a home computer on, StreamNeo runs a YouTube stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and does not replace checking YouTube Studio for content notices or securing rights to your material.
