If Nexus Mods downloads keep leveling off near 1.5 or 3 MB/s, the likely cause is a Nexus account limit—not Vortex or your internet plan. Nexus’s current help pages list those approximate caps for free accounts, depending on ad-blocker and account status. Premium removes the Nexus-side cap, but it cannot guarantee a fast connection. If your speed is well below the applicable limit, check the route to Nexus’s CDN, VPN, Wi-Fi, other downloads, and local software.
First, compare the number Nexus shows with the units on your internet plan: Nexus and Vortex typically display megabytes per second (MB/s), while providers advertise megabits per second (Mbps). 1 MB/s equals 8 Mbps, so 3 MB/s is about 24 Mbps—not 3 Mbps. Check whether you are hitting Nexus’s speed limit

These are Nexus-side limits, not limits on your whole internet connection. A 100 Mbps plan has a theoretical maximum of about 12.5 MB/s, but a free Nexus download may still be held near 1.5 or 3 MB/s. Actual speeds are lower than theoretical plan rates because of network overhead, Wi-Fi, server performance and other traffic.

For non-Premium users, simultaneous Nexus downloads share the allowance: two downloads should not each receive the full cap. If several downloads together stay near 1.5 or 3 MB/s, that is consistent with the account limit. Older articles may quote 1 MB/s and 2 MB/s; those figures reflect earlier limits, while the current help pages list approximately 1.5 and 3 MB/s. Disabling an ad blocker is an option, not a required fix: Nexus says a free account without one has a higher approximate cap. Only change that setting if you are comfortable with the site’s advertising. Reinstalling Vortex, changing DNS or buying a faster internet plan will not normally remove a server-side account limit.
A quick way to locate the bottleneck
- Pause other transfers. Stop game-launcher updates, Windows updates, cloud backups and sync, torrents, uploads and other Vortex downloads.
- Run Nexus’s CDN speed test. Record the results for the available locations. This checks the path to Nexus’s content delivery network, rather than just your general internet connection. Follow the test instructions in Nexus’s download troubleshooting guide.
- Compare with a normal internet speed test. A fast result there does not prove the route to Nexus is fast: different services use different servers and network paths.
- Try the same or a similarly sized Nexus file in a browser and in Vortex. Avoid comparing a tiny file that finishes before its speed settles with a much larger archive.
- If you use a VPN, repeat once with it off. If practical, compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet as well.

Why Nexus can be slow when other downloads are fast
Nexus delivers files through a global content-delivery network (CDN). The path between your ISP and the server serving a particular file can be congested, distant or affected by a peering or infrastructure problem. A speed test or a fast Steam download measures a different route, so it cannot rule out a Nexus-specific slowdown. Nexus lists ISP routing, server distance and connection quality among factors that affect actual download speeds.
Other possibilities include ISP traffic shaping, a congested or distant VPN exit, weak or crowded Wi-Fi, browser extensions that interfere with downloads, antivirus inspection of large archives, and other applications using bandwidth. A slowdown that fluctuates or briefly drops to zero may be a connection interruption, a transfer waiting on data, security scanning or local disk processing—not necessarily an account cap. Do not assume a Nexus-wide outage from one slow file or one bad test result.

If Vortex is slower than the browser
A slow Vortex download is not automatically a Vortex-imposed Nexus cap. Nexus staff have said the account-based limit is applied by Nexus’s servers, while Vortex can still be affected by its own settings, an old installation or local software. Compare the browser and Vortex under similar conditions before changing anything.
- Update Vortex to a current version, as Nexus recommends.
- Check Vortex’s download settings for a bandwidth limit you may have set.
- Restart Vortex and sign in again if the download session appears stale, then retry from the Nexus file page.
- Temporarily test whether antivirus, firewall or other security software is interfering with Vortex. If the test identifies a cause, use a narrow, appropriate exception or the product’s guidance; do not leave protection disabled.

If both browser and Vortex are slow
When both methods perform poorly, start with the account tier and Nexus CDN test, then test the VPN and local network. If possible, try a phone hotspot as a short diagnostic comparison—not necessarily as a practical way to download large mods. If Nexus is much faster on the hotspot, the home ISP, router, Wi-Fi or route from that ISP becomes more likely than Vortex.

tracert files.nexus-cdn.comThis is a route diagnostic, not a speed test. Asterisks or one high-latency hop do not by themselves prove that hop is causing the slowdown; routers may deprioritize diagnostic traffic. Repeated, consistent evidence of end-to-end loss or poor performance is more useful than one apparent bad hop.
VPNs are also a comparison, not a guaranteed fix. A VPN may help if it changes a poor ISP route or traffic-shaping behavior, but its exit server can be distant or congested and encryption adds overhead. Change one variable at a time so you can tell whether it helped.
Will Premium make downloads faster?
Premium removes Nexus’s account-level speed restriction; it does not promise a particular rate. A Premium account can still be slowed by ISP congestion or shaping, a poor CDN route, VPN performance, Wi-Fi, security software, a temporary server problem or local hardware. Nexus’s membership and speed-cap guidance makes that distinction.
Premium is most likely to help if your free-account downloads repeatedly plateau near 1.5 or 3 MB/s and the Nexus CDN test shows considerably more capacity. It is less likely to help if you are already below the free limit, the CDN test is poor, browser and Vortex are both slow, or only one file is affected. Treat Premium as an optional way to remove Nexus’s cap—not as a fix for an ISP, VPN or home-network problem. Check Nexus’s live Premium page for current terms before purchasing.

Nexus forum reports also describe Premium users with slow transfers despite stronger CDN test results, with routing or ISP behavior among the explanations discussed. Those reports illustrate possible failure modes; they are not universal speed measurements or proof of a current widespread problem. Slow progress and a download that will not start are different problems. Nexus offers resumable downloads to free users for files larger than 500 MB. This feature does not increase the speed cap; it can reduce wasted time when a transfer is interrupted by letting it continue rather than begin again.
According to Nexus’s resumable-download guidance, browser support for the relevant File System API is required, and add-ons or privacy settings can prevent the option from appearing. Closing the tab pauses the download. Resuming may temporarily require roughly twice the file’s size in free storage because the partial file is copied, and the archive can appear corrupted if you open it before the download has finished and been finalized.
When it may be an API limit instead
If a transfer is progressing slowly, investigate bandwidth, account caps and the delivery route. If Vortex cannot start downloads or reports a rate-limit error, that may be an API or website-access limit rather than a slow connection.

Nexus’s API-limit help page, last updated June 3, 2026, documents limits of 20,000 requests per 24 hours and 500 per hour. It says the daily quota resets at 00:00 GMT and the hourly quota at the start of each hour; Vortex uses about three API requests per mod download, and other actions also consume requests. Consult the current API-limit guidance for the error you see. API quotas govern requests, not the speed of an already-running file transfer.
What to send Nexus or your ISP
If the issue persists after controlled comparisons, share useful evidence rather than only saying “downloads are slow.” Record:
- Your country and ISP, and whether you were on Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Your Nexus account tier and whether an ad blocker or VPN was active.
- The Nexus CDN test results and the approximate time you ran them.
- Whether the same or similarly sized file was slow in both the browser and Vortex.
- Whether the issue affects all files or only one, and whether another network changes the result.
- The output of
tracert files.nexus-cdn.com, if relevant.
These details help separate a Nexus account ceiling from an ISP route, local network or client-specific problem. They also make it easier to avoid risky, broad fixes—such as leaving security software disabled—when the actual cause is elsewhere.
