Overwatch 2 usually is not deliberately ejecting you. It removes your client after communication with the lobby or match server is interrupted for long enough. The interruption can come from Wi‑Fi, your router or ISP route, VPN or security software, a PC or console crash, damaged game files, a Blizzard-side incident, or an account restriction.
That distinction matters because the server can record a technical disconnect as a leave. Blizzard says its systems generally cannot reliably distinguish an intentional departure from an involuntary connection failure, so an accidental drop can still affect your leaver status. Do not use Competitive as a troubleshooting laboratory: test in a custom game or another low-risk mode first.
Quick diagnosis
| What you see | More likely category | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Network icons, packet-loss warnings or ping spikes before removal | Wi‑Fi, router, ISP route or packet loss | Enable network statistics and test Ethernet |
| The game freezes, closes or returns to the desktop | Crash, driver, overheating or background-software problem | Check performance and crash symptoms, not just internet speed |
| “Failed to Connect to Server” while joining | Connection, routing, authentication, update or service issue | Save the exact wording and error code |
| Several friends on different networks disconnect together | Blizzard or regional service problem | Stop queueing and check official Blizzard channels |
| A queue suspension appears after a disconnect | Leaver system | Stop Competitive testing and play only after stability returns |
| You are sent to login or see an explicit ban or enforcement message | Account or security restriction | Use the relevant Blizzard account-support path |
What “kicked out” can mean
Returned to the main menu
This normally means the client lost contact with the lobby or game server. It is a connection event, not by itself evidence of a ban.
Disconnected, then reconnected
A brief route failure, burst of packet loss or client stall may have interrupted the session. Reconnecting does not guarantee that the server will erase the absence; if you were gone too long, it may already have recorded a leave.

Repeatedly unable to join or rejoin
Continuing failures point to an unresolved connection, routing, authentication, service or installation problem. Record the exact error rather than repeatedly launching Competitive.
Locked out of Competitive
A suspension is an account penalty, but it is not automatically a full account ban. Read the exact label: queue suspension, Competitive suspension, season restriction and account ban are different actions.
The main causes
Unstable Wi‑Fi
Average ping or a speed-test result does not prove a stable real-time connection. Interference, distance, congestion and brief roaming events can drop packets for long enough to remove you. Blizzard’s diagnostics distinguish latency, packet loss and loss of contact with the lobby or game server: network statistics and warning indicators.

- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
- Network-warning icons appear immediately before the removal.
- Ping spikes or packet-loss indicators appear even though average ping looks normal.
- Other household devices lose service at the same moment.
- The problem disappears on Ethernet.
Router, NAT or ISP instability
A router can renegotiate a connection, change routes or mishandle traffic while browsing and voice chat continue. Congestion, restrictive NAT, failing cables and ISP routing can produce intermittent match drops. Discord working does not clear your route: different services tolerate interruptions differently.

Bursts of lost packets can break a match despite a low average ping. Look for loss and warning icons over time, not only a single speed test.
VPN, proxy, firewall or antivirus interference
Security software or a VPN can block, inspect or reroute game traffic. Blizzard’s support search covers firewall and security-software troubleshooting. Disable a VPN or proxy temporarily before treating it as a solution: it may add latency, packet loss or NAT complications. A VPN can occasionally bypass a poor ISP route, but that is a conditional test, not a universal fix.

PC or console performance failure
A frozen client, driver fault, overheating, insufficient performance or background conflict can look like a network disconnect. If the game closes completely, investigate crashing and performance separately from internet symptoms. Blizzard’s troubleshooting guide separates connection, performance, crashing, installation and patching categories: Overwatch technical troubleshooting.
Damaged or mismatched game files
A failed patch or corrupted file can cause errors while joining or during a session. On PC, check for updates and use the Battle.net launcher’s scan/repair option if it is present in your current interface. On PlayStation, Xbox and Switch, use the platform’s update, cache or reinstall procedures. Reinstallation cannot fix ISP routing, packet loss, a Blizzard outage or an account penalty.
Blizzard-side outage or update regression
A service problem becomes more likely when players on different platforms and ISPs disconnect together, the message says the server closed unexpectedly, or the issue begins immediately after a major patch. Player forums can show that others are affected, but reports are anecdotal rather than official outage confirmation; for example, see recent community disconnect reports.

Account or security restriction
A login-screen return, explicit ban or suspension notice, or console enforcement code indicates a different category from an ordinary failed connection. Blizzard separates Overwatch bans, suspensions, appeals and leaver penalties. Do not infer a ban from “Failed to Connect to Server” alone.
Diagnose it without risking another penalty
- Stop Competitive. Blizzard advises using casual modes while technical problems are investigated, and custom games are a low-risk test environment. Continuing to queue while unstable can add leaves.
- Record the event. Save the full message, error code, platform, region, mode, approximate time, whether teammates also disconnected, whether you returned to the menu or login screen, and whether reconnection worked. Blizzard maintains specific guidance for connection errors; search the exact wording, including codes, in its support results.
- Show network statistics. On PC, Blizzard lists Shift+Ctrl+R as the default shortcut. On console, use Options > Video > Show Network Stats. Watch latency, spikes, packet loss and warning icons. These are clues, not proof of fault; Blizzard notes that some warning thresholds are deliberately sensitive.
- Restart in a controlled order. Close the game, restart the PC or console, then restart the modem/router. Pause downloads, streaming, cloud backups and other heavy traffic.
- Remove wireless and software variables. If possible, test Ethernet. Temporarily disable VPN or proxy software and check that firewall or security rules allow the game. Change one variable at a time so you can identify what helped.
- Compare networks. Try one custom game on another connection, such as a phone hotspot, if practical. A problem that vanishes on another network points toward Wi‑Fi, router or ISP routing; a problem that follows the same device points toward the client or hardware. Do not use another account to evade a restriction.
- Update or repair the client. Install pending game, operating-system and driver updates. Use Battle.net scan/repair on PC when available; use your console manufacturer’s supported update, cache or reinstall process on console.
- Test progressively. Run one custom game, then several unranked matches. Return to Competitive only after the connection remains stable across those tests.
How Overwatch leaver penalties work
Blizzard’s current leaver-status support article describes unranked thresholds and says the player card shows how many games remain to clear the status. The published article says leaving two or three of the last 20 unranked games can result in a two-minute suspension from queuing for most modes, with repeated leaving increasing the status; it also lists a 75% experience penalty. Thresholds and wording can change, so verify the message shown in your client and the current article at Blizzard Support.
Competitive Play uses stricter consequences. Blizzard’s Defense Matrix explanation says repeated Competitive leaving can escalate to a suspension from Competitive for the rest of the season: Defense Matrix: Deterring Leavers. That is not the same as a full account ban.

Can an accidental disconnect be removed?
Generally, no. Blizzard explains that it cannot reliably determine whether a departure was intentional or technical and that the effect on teammates is the same: its explanation of technical disconnects and leaver penalties. Policies can change, and a distinct enforcement error or service-wide incident may be handled differently, but ordinary support should not be treated as a guaranteed penalty reversal.
Platform-specific checks
PC
- Use the Battle.net update and scan/repair controls when available.
- Check graphics, network and operating-system drivers, temperatures and crash logs if the game freezes or closes.
- Test with VPNs, overlays and security software temporarily removed from the path, then restore protection and add only supported exceptions.
PlayStation, Xbox and Switch
- Install system and game updates and run the platform’s built-in network test.
- Test a wired connection where supported, or move closer to the access point for a controlled Wi‑Fi comparison.
- Use the platform’s supported cache, restart and reinstall procedures; menu names differ by model and system version.
Across every platform, router, ISP, regional service, patch and account-policy causes remain possible.
When Blizzard is probably the problem
Prioritize official Blizzard news and support channels instead of repeatedly reinstalling when:
- friends on different ISPs or platforms disconnect at the same time;
- the full lobby disappears;
- the issue starts immediately after a major update;
- the same failure appears in multiple modes on an otherwise stable connection; or
- the message says the server closed unexpectedly.
These correlations raise the probability of a service-side issue but do not prove its root cause. Blizzard may not remove ordinary leaver penalties even when the trigger was technical.
When to contact Blizzard
Open a support request for a recurring technical failure or a clearly identified account restriction. Include:
- platform and hardware;
- wired or wireless connection, ISP and broad region;
- exact error text and code;
- date and time of each disconnect;
- whether other players disconnected;
- network-stat screenshots or video;
- updates, router restarts, Ethernet, security-software and repair tests already completed; and
- the exact penalty message, if one appeared.
Support is most useful for diagnosing the underlying failure or handling a genuine enforcement case. Blizzard’s published position means a ticket is not a promise that a normal leaver penalty will be overturned.
Quick Recap
Before your next Competitive match
- No disconnects during a custom game and several unranked matches.
- No continuing packet-loss or server-contact warnings.
- Ethernet tested, or Wi‑Fi shown to be stable under ordinary household use.
- Pending game, system and driver updates completed.
- VPN, downloads and avoidable overlays removed from the test path.
- No active suspension or leaver-status warning that you have not understood.
