A lower RPM on a 24/7 YouTube livestream does not, by itself, mean advertisers are paying less for your content. RPM combines several kinds of creator revenue and divides them by views; if a growing share of livestream views has no ad, RPM can fall even while ad prices hold steady. YouTube’s documentation does not identify 24/7 duration itself as an independent cause.
What RPM measures—and what it does not
YouTube defines RPM as creator revenue after YouTube’s revenue share per 1,000 views. It can include ad revenue, YouTube Premium revenue, memberships, Super Chat and Super Stickers. Because RPM combines revenue sources and uses views as its denominator, it is not a direct measure of what advertisers paid for an ad.
Three related metrics help separate the causes:
- CPM is advertiser cost per 1,000 ad impressions, before YouTube’s revenue share.
- Playback-based CPM is advertiser cost per 1,000 video playbacks that included at least one ad.
- Estimated monetized playbacks count times a video was watched with ads. They are not the same as total views or ad impressions.
A view can happen without an ad, and one monetized playback can include more than one ad impression. Compare these metrics rather than treating views, playbacks and impressions as interchangeable. YouTube Analytics: understand your revenue data
Why livestream RPM can be lower
More views may be unmonetized
If total views grow faster than estimated monetized playbacks, revenue per 1,000 views can decline without a comparable drop in advertiser rates. Ad availability can vary with settings, inventory, viewer targeting and geography, a viewer’s YouTube Premium status, recent ad exposure and content suitability.

The audience or ad mix may differ
Advertiser competition varies by geography, and advertisers can target audiences, devices, demographics and interests. CPM can also vary with season and the ad formats available. A livestream that attracts a different mix of viewers—or a different mix of ad impressions—may therefore have a different playback-based CPM from your regular videos.
Live ad delivery depends on settings and serving
Live pre-roll and display ads turn on when live monetization is enabled, but an ad slot does not guarantee an ad. If you choose manual mid-rolls, no mid-rolls run unless you insert them. Automatic live mid-rolls are YouTube’s recommended mode. YouTube reported over 20% average uplift in in-stream ad revenue per hour among creators who enabled automatic live mid-rolls compared with those who did not, averaged across 207 countries in January 2024. That is a platform-reported comparison, not a promised result or a specific RPM increase for an individual channel. YouTube Help: monetize your live stream

Live and replay revenue may be mixed up
A 24/7 stream can produce live viewing and later replay viewing. YouTube Analytics can break down live and replay ad revenue using the Live filter. Make sure the number you compare represents the same kind of viewing on both sides.
RPM includes non-ad revenue
Memberships, Premium, Super Chat and Super Stickers can change total RPM. A change in any of these sources may move the combined metric even when ad performance has not changed.

Diagnose the difference in YouTube Analytics
- Match the date ranges. Compare equivalent periods, such as the same number of days, and use the same RPM metric. Separate live from replay revenue with the Live filter so you are not comparing livestream activity with a different mix of regular-video views.
- Check monetized-view share. Compare views with estimated monetized playbacks and ad impressions. If views increased faster than monetized playbacks, the change may be in the share of views that had ads rather than the price of ads.
- Check advertiser rates and audience mix. Compare playback-based CPM and CPM alongside audience geography. Changes in season, geography or ad-format mix can affect these rates.
- Verify live monetization and mid-roll mode. Confirm monetization is enabled. Check whether mid-rolls are automatic, scheduled or manual; in manual mode, confirm that breaks were actually inserted. External embeds with autoplay have live ads turned off, and ad slots are never guaranteed to serve.
- Review eligibility and modules. Content that does not meet advertiser-friendly rules may receive limited or no ads. Watch Page ads and Premium revenue on live or long-form content require acceptance of the Watch Page Monetization Module. Fan funding requires the Commerce Product Module and activation of the individual feature. YouTube channel monetization policies · Choose how you want to monetize
- Inspect revenue sources before drawing a conclusion. Since RPM includes more than advertising, look at the revenue breakdown as well as ad metrics to see which source changed.
What to conclude—and what not to conclude
A lower livestream RPM is a signal to inspect monetized-playback share, ad rates, delivery settings, audience mix, live-versus-replay revenue and non-ad sources. It is not proof that YouTube applies a penalty for running a stream continuously. The official guidance reviewed here does not establish 24/7 duration as an independent cause; channel-specific Analytics is needed to identify what changed.
