The right fix depends on what is greyed out: the Play button, a download or update, a game in your library, or an in-game content tile. First identify the control and whether you use the EA app or Steam; then follow the matching steps below. These checks address common launcher and mod-related causes, but they cannot diagnose every account, service, or game issue.
Start by identifying what is greyed out
“Greyed out” can describe different problems, including a Play button or a download button. EA community posts use both descriptions, so the control alone does not identify the cause.

- Is it the Play button, a download or update control, a game missing from the library, or an in-game content tile?
- Are you launching through the EA app or Steam, and on which platform?
- Is the game downloading or updating, and did the issue begin after a game update or a change to mods or custom content?
- Does an error message appear?
If the EA app download, update, or library is affected
Clear the EA app cache if downloads fail or stall, the app cannot update, it is stuck in offline mode, or a game is missing from the library. EA notes that clearing the cache will not fix an outage or other server problem.
- Open the EA app menu.
- Select Help, then App recovery.
- Select Clear cache and follow the prompts.
If the EA app will not open on Windows 10 or 11, open the Start menu, find the EA folder, and launch App Recovery from there. Use its cache-clearing option. If the issue remains, check EA service status rather than repeating the cache step. See EA’s cache-clearing guidance.

If you use mods or custom content and the problem started after an update
A game update can make a previously working mod incompatible. EA disables mods during updates to reduce gameplay problems and recommends checking with each mod’s creator for compatibility with the current game version. A mod-related problem is plausible if the timing fits, but it is not established just because a control is greyed out.
- Disable mods and custom content, then launch the game to check whether the problem remains.
- During this clean test, do not save if content is missing. EA warns that saving and exiting while mods or custom content are disabled can remove that content from a save. Exit without saving.
- Check the mod creators’ information for versions compatible with the latest update.
- When you are ready to restore compatible mods, enable them in Game Options, then relaunch the game.

If you use Steam and launch or download availability is affected
For a Steam installation, the general checks are to verify the game’s files and clear Steam’s download cache. These are Steam troubleshooting options for availability or installation problems; they are not a guaranteed fix for every greyed-out control. The relevant Steam file-verification page and Steam download-cache page provide the platform’s support guidance.
