War Thunder “lag” on PS5 can mean very different things. Rubber-banding, teleporting vehicles and delayed hit registration usually indicate ping or packet loss; visible image stutter with normal network indicators is a frame-rate problem; an endless loading screen is a connection, service or installation problem. Identify which symptom you have before changing router settings or rebuilding the PS5 database.
Use this order: check service status, confirm the native PS5 version, restart the complete network path, compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet, test another server region, then troubleshoot the game installation and display if the network is stable.
First, identify what “lag” looks like

A speed test showing fast downloads does not rule out packet loss, jitter, bufferbloat or a poor route to a particular game region. Conversely, a router cannot repair an FPS drop.
Five-minute diagnostic checklist
- Check status first. Look at War Thunder’s official news and service notices and PlayStation Network status. A dated notice, such as Gaijin’s May 14, 2026 service-instability warning, proves outages occur but does not prove that the service is down now.
- Confirm the PS5 build. Highlight War Thunder on the home screen, press Options, choose the version option and select the PS5 edition. The native build does not carry the “PS4” label; the backward-compatible build does. If needed, download the PS5 edition from Game Library. Gaijin documents the distinction in its FAQ.
- Restart everything. Close the game, turn off the PS5, unplug the modem and router for at least five minutes, reconnect them and wait for service to return, then restart the console. This clears temporary states but cannot fix persistent ISP congestion or a bad server route.
- Run the Ethernet test. Connect the PS5 directly to the router, select the wired connection under Settings > Network > Settings, run Test Internet Connection, and play the same mode and region for several matches.
- Compare a second server region. Select one region at a time and record ping, packet loss, time and match results. A stable alternative region suggests a regional route or server issue rather than defective PS5 hardware.
Fix network lag and packet loss
Use Ethernet as the decisive comparison
Gaijin’s console troubleshooting guide specifically recommends a cable directly to the console. Interpret the result:

- Ethernet fixes it: Wi-Fi interference, distance, radio congestion or router placement is likely involved.
- Ethernet changes nothing: investigate the ISP route, War Thunder region, PSN, installation or rendering.
- Only one region fails on both connections: suspect regional routing or that service region.
Ethernet reduces local wireless instability; it does not automatically lower ping to a distant server.
If you must use Wi-Fi
- Move the PS5 closer to the router and keep it out of cabinets, behind the television and away from large metal objects.
- Use 5 GHz or 6 GHz when the console is close enough for a strong signal; 2.4 GHz may travel farther but is often more congested.
- Pause downloads, streaming, cloud backups and other uploads while testing.
- Test at busy and quiet times. A mesh system can help coverage, but a wireless hop can add latency; wiring the PS5 to a nearby mesh node is preferable.
- Update router firmware before changing advanced settings.
PlayStation’s connection guidance also recommends improving router proximity and removing interference (NW-102650-4 and WS-116520-5).

Check NAT and double NAT
Go to Settings > Network > Connection Status > View Connection Status and note NAT type. Type 3 can restrict network features, but NAT is not a ping measurement; changing it may help matchmaking without changing in-match latency. A second router behind an ISP gateway can create double NAT. Enable UPnP if appropriate, or ask your ISP about filtering and carrier-grade NAT.

Do not overvalue DNS or a new router
Changing DNS can sometimes help name resolution or login, but normally does not reduce latency after a match is established. A Wi-Fi 6/6E router, mesh system or QoS feature is worthwhile only when your Ethernet comparison demonstrates a local-network problem or household upload saturation. It cannot repair a congested ISP route or a War Thunder server.
Fix FPS drops, freezes and rendering stutter
If the hangar, test drive or replay stutters with normal ping and packet loss, stop treating it as internet lag.

- Confirm you are running the native PS5 version, then restart the game and console.
- Install PS5 system updates via Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. Highlight War Thunder, press Options and choose Check for Update. Sony’s system-software guidance covers the current path.
- Test the display path: toggle VRR off and on separately, try another HDMI cable or input, and verify the expected refresh mode. Close suspended games and applications.
- Use Safe Mode only when local system symptoms persist. Turn off the PS5, hold the power button until the second beep, connect the controller by USB and choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database. Try Clear System Software Cache first, then Rebuild Database if necessary. Sony describes these as system-feature, performance or storage-index tools—not cures for remote packet loss (PS5 support).
- Reinstall when an interrupted update or damaged assets are plausible: highlight the game, press Options > Delete, restart, then install the native PS5 edition from Game Library or the PlayStation Store. Sony recommends deletion and reinstallation for certain game-start errors (CE-109573-5).
Players have reported update-related frame jumps and PS5 Pro frame-time issues in community discussions, but those reports are anecdotal and do not establish a universal hardware defect or a confirmed PS5 patch regression. Report a reproducible case rather than assuming a console upgrade is required.

Fix loading, login and “no internet” errors
- Check current War Thunder notices and PSN status before touching the installation.
- Run the PS5 internet test, restart the console and network equipment, and compare wired Ethernet.
- Record the exact message, error code, date and time. A generic connection warning can occur during wider service or routing trouble; it does not by itself prove that your home internet failed.
- Verify the account profile and native game build.
- Reinstall only after service and network checks fail to explain the problem.
How to tell which fix worked
Compare like with like: the same game mode, server region, connection type and approximate time of day. Record ping and packet-loss indicators over several matches, not one unusually good or bad result. Low ping with packet loss can feel worse than moderately higher but stable ping.

When to contact your ISP or Gaijin
Contact the ISP when multiple online games or devices show loss on both Wi-Fi and Ethernet, especially at predictable busy times. Contact Gaijin when only War Thunder is affected, one region consistently loses packets, or the problem survives a clean wired test.
Include your PS5 model (standard, Slim or Pro), native PS5/PS4 build, country and ISP, wired or Wi-Fi connection, NAT type, selected region, ping and packet-loss readings, exact timestamps with time zone, affected modes, error text, screenshots or video, and the results of router-restart and Ethernet tests. Bottom line
Do not buy a router or rebuild the PS5 database until you know which symptom you are fixing. Rubber-banding and packet loss call for service checks, region comparison and Ethernet testing; visible stutter calls for the native PS5 build, updates, display isolation and local-system repair; loading failures require status checks and installation troubleshooting. The correct diagnosis—not a generic “gaming lag” tweak—is what fixes War Thunder.
