First, check the console-wide vibration setting: on a Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, or Switch OLED, go to System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Controller Vibration and turn it on. The controller you use to enable it should vibrate briefly. If vibration is still missing, test another game, update the console and controller, charge and reset the controller, then check the setting again. Nintendo recommends service if it still will not vibrate.
1. Turn on Controller Vibration
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Select Controllers and Sensors.
- Turn on Controller Vibration.
Nintendo says the controller used to enable the feature should vibrate momentarily, and the setting applies to paired controllers. If you do not feel that brief vibration, continue with the checks below. Nintendo’s instructions for activating HD Rumble.
2. Check whether the game or situation supports vibration
Rumble is not equally strong in every game or on every controller. Nintendo says that variation is normal, so one faint or absent effect is not enough to establish a fault. Try another game or a different scene known to use vibration. If you can compare controllers, use the same game and scene, the same console setting, and the same controller type; that makes the comparison more meaningful. Nintendo’s troubleshooting guidance.
3. Update the system and controller
Nintendo’s troubleshooting sequence starts by checking that the console has the latest system update, then updating the controller. Follow the console’s on-screen update prompts and the controller-update option in System Settings; menu availability can depend on the controller being paired.

What to do on Nintendo Switch Lite
Nintendo says HD Rumble can be used with Switch Lite through a supported wireless Joy-Con or Pro Controller. If you mean the Lite’s built-in controls, test with a supported wireless controller before assuming the console has the same vibration behavior as a detachable Joy-Con. Nintendo’s guidance does not establish that every Switch Lite setup uses the same controller arrangement. Nintendo’s Switch Lite note.

When to contact Nintendo
If vibration remains absent after the setting, game, update, charge, and reset checks, Nintendo recommends sending the controller for service. Its US support article directs Joy-Con owners to the service center and owners of other controllers to Nintendo Support. Service options and eligibility depend on region; use Nintendo’s support page for your location. The available guidance does not identify a specific failed component, so do not assume the vibration motor, wiring, battery, or board is at fault without an inspection.
