Why Metroidvania Games Use Backtracking—and How to Make It Feel Rewarding

Backtracking works when a new ability changes what players can do in familiar places—and returning offers discovery, shortcuts, encounters, or worthwhile detours.

Metroidvania games use backtracking to make progression change how players understand and move through a connected world. An obstacle can introduce a place the player cannot yet reach; a later ability turns that remembered barrier into a fresh opportunity. The return feels rewarding when it brings a new choice, discovery, shortcut, encounter, or payoff—not simply another stretch of repeated travel.

Why backtracking belongs in the genre

Metroidvania design links exploration to ability-based progression. Instead of opening every route as soon as it appears, a game can show a barrier early, let the player remember it, and later provide a movement or combat ability that changes what is possible there. Returning makes progress tangible: the world has not merely given the player a stronger character; it has become more navigable.

A visible obstacle can also teach before it opens. A distinctive barrier gives players a landmark and a reason to ask what might overcome it. In a map-design discussion of Super Metroid, the example is a block type shown before the player can break it: encountering that block again after gaining the relevant tool connects the new ability to a remembered opportunity. GDC Vault’s description of Koji Igarashi’s talk likewise presents exploration and backtracking as part of the genre’s action-adventure mix: GDC Vault.

What makes a return trip rewarding

A revisit needs a payoff, but that payoff does not have to be a collectible or a mandatory upgrade. It might be an item that improves the character, a shortcut that changes the map, an optional challenge, an encounter, a character, or a distinctive sight. The useful test is whether the player gets a meaningful new interaction or discovery for choosing to return.

Make the new ability enjoyable to use

In a 2014 Famitsu interview, Igarashi described a progression loop in which enjoyable controls encourage players to seek new abilities, try them, and look for more. The ability should feel good in the moment, not just function as a key that removes a lock. A satisfying movement option, for example, makes the act of testing it across familiar terrain part of the reward.

Give optional detours a reason to exist

Igarashi also described keeping the main route fairly straightforward for players who mainly want to finish the story, while placing worthwhile items or mechanisms at optional dead ends. That arrangement lets the game offer exploration without making every side path a compulsory chore. A detour can be optional and still feel valuable if its payoff is clear enough to make the player’s choice matter.

Let geography itself become a discovery

Finding a connection between two familiar places can be its own reward. In interviews with Hollow Knight developers, PC Gamer reported an emphasis on connecting regions and placing things to notice throughout exploration, including when the player was not advancing the main story. A shortcut or newly understood route turns a revisit into learning the world’s geography rather than simply retracing a corridor.

How to balance a clear route with freedom

There is no single correct amount of gating. A more directed structure can keep the main story legible while using branches for optional rewards. A more open structure can soften or reduce hard gates, make some power-ups optional, and allow more variation in the order players explore. Igarashi’s account and the Hollow Knight developers’ account describe different design choices, not proof that one formula is best.

Design question More directed approach More open approach
Route clarity Keep a plausible main route apparent for players focused on story progress. Allow detours and route variation, accepting that the next step may be less explicit.
Ability gating Use hard gates to establish a more controlled progression sequence. Reduce hard gates or make some upgrades optional to increase player choice.
Return-trip value Concentrate worthwhile items or mechanisms along optional branches. Support exploration with connections, discoveries, and useful encounters across regions.
Travel friction Keep the main route comprehensible and avoid making optional revisits necessary for basic progress. Use connections and shortcuts where the world’s layout supports them.

These are tendencies, not guarantees: a directed game can still reward exploration, and an open game can still communicate a strong path. The design choice depends on how much control the game needs over sequence and how much uncertainty its players are meant to manage.

Keep the world coherent as it changes

Interconnection makes backtracking more meaningful, but it also raises the cost of changing the world. A change in one area can affect routes, landmarks, or assumptions elsewhere. In a Game Developer interview, Moon Studios described the challenge of altering an element in one part of a large world without causing unwanted effects in distant areas. Designers need to consider how a new gate, shortcut, or world-state change fits the wider map, not just whether it works in the room where it appears.

Check whether players understand the invitation

Designers know what a mechanism is supposed to signal; first-time players do not. Igarashi noted in the Famitsu interview that players may not understand mechanisms as readily as designers expect. Testing with newcomers can reveal whether a barrier reads as a future opportunity, whether the likely ability is understandable, and whether players can find a plausible next step without being led through every decision.

  • Can players recognize and remember the obstacle when they first encounter it?
  • After gaining the ability, can they connect it to the obstacle without an unexplained leap?
  • Does a return offer a new interaction, discovery, shortcut, encounter, or practical reward?
  • Can players who prioritize the story identify a plausible main route?
  • Do the routes and world changes remain spatially and logically consistent?

Those checks expose the central design tension: exploration should feel self-directed, while progression should remain understandable. A strong revisit rewards curiosity and makes the world feel newly legible; a weak one asks players to repeat movement without changing what they can do or learn.
