Microsoft initially required Kinect with every Xbox One so developers could count on the same voice, gesture and motion-sensing capabilities across the console base. The strategy was meant to make living-room gaming less fragmented, but the requirement did not last: Microsoft announced a Kinect-free Xbox One option in May 2014.
Was Xbox 720 a real console?
No. “Xbox 720” was a rumor-era name for Microsoft’s unannounced next console; “Durango” also appeared in reporting about the project. In May 2013, Microsoft officially announced the product as Xbox One. Reports in 2012 discussed possible hardware and launch plans, but those were not confirmed retail specifications: CBS News’ January 2012 report and Ars Technica’s June 2012 coverage of an alleged planning document both treated the information as unconfirmed.
Microsoft’s May 2013 announcement presented Xbox One as a platform built around the console, an updated controller, Kinect, SmartGlass and Xbox Live—not as a product called Xbox 720. Its launch presentation described hardware including 8 GB of RAM and more than 5 billion transistors, figures Microsoft cited at the time rather than independent performance measurements. Microsoft’s Xbox One announcement gives the official framing.
Why did Xbox One require Kinect?
Microsoft’s stated reason was consistency for developers. Its launch FAQ called Kinect “an essential and integrated part of the platform” and argued that including it with every console would let creators assume voice, gesture and natural-sensing input were available. That certainty, Microsoft said, could support easier and richer experiences. The Xbox One launch FAQ spells out the rationale.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
At the launch event, Don Mattrick described the living room as “too complex, too fragmented and too slow” and presented Kinect, the controller and SmartGlass as devices intended to work together. In that argument, fragmentation was not simply a matter of controller models: it was also about the different ways people interacted with games and entertainment. A common sensor would give developers a predictable additional input method instead of making them guess how many customers owned the accessory.
Microsoft also emphasized Kinect’s sensing capabilities at launch, including a time-of-flight measurement of about 13 billionths of a second and a data rate above 2 gigabits per second. Those were company-reported technical figures, not evidence by themselves that mandatory Kinect eliminated input fragmentation. Microsoft’s announcement contains those launch claims.

When did Microsoft drop the requirement?
Microsoft changed its Xbox One policies in June 2013 after community feedback, then made the hardware change in May 2014. The Kinect decision should be understood as a change in product strategy, not as a launch feature that remained compulsory throughout the console’s life.
| Date | What changed or was reported |
|---|---|
| January 25, 2012 | CBS News reported rumors about a possible “Xbox 720,” including Blu-ray, Kinect 2 and a possible 2013 release; these were unconfirmed reports. |
| June 18, 2012 | Ars Technica discussed an alleged leaked planning document mentioning a 2013 target and new Kinect hardware, while describing the material as rumor. |
| May 1, 2013 | Xbox Wire’s FAQ said Kinect would be included with every Xbox One as an essential, integrated part of the platform. |
| June 19, 2013 | Microsoft announced policy changes after community feedback: no 24-hour online check, ordinary disc lending, resale and gifting restored, and offline play allowed after setup. Microsoft’s policy update. |
| May 13, 2014 | Microsoft announced a $399 Xbox One option without Kinect, alongside a premium Kinect bundle, and said a standalone sensor would follow later that fall. The $399 amount was the announced US price for that option. Xbox Wire’s announcement. |
| June 17, 2014 | Xbox Wire said developers could reclaim GPU resources reserved for Kinect skeletal tracking in games that did not use that feature. System voice commands and other platform functions remained available. The developer update. |
Did mandatory Kinect solve controller fragmentation?
It addressed one kind of uncertainty: developers could expect the Kinect sensor to be present on every Xbox One sold under the original bundle strategy. It did not replace the controller or establish that every game would use voice or gesture input. The controller remained a distinct, standardized control device; Kinect was an additional input path.

Once Microsoft sold a Kinect-free console, developers could no longer assume every owner had the sensor. The June 2014 GPU update also made the trade-off explicit: games that did not use Kinect skeletal tracking could reclaim the resources reserved for that feature. That gave developers more flexibility, while ending the original guarantee of universal sensor availability.
Microsoft later cited company-reported usage figures in its May 2014 announcement: more than 80% of Xbox One owners were actively using Kinect, averaging 120 voice commands per console per month. These figures were Microsoft’s own report at the time, not an independent measurement or proof that all owners wanted the sensor. The announcement also explained the move to offer buyers a choice.

What changed for buyers and developers?
| Consideration | Original Kinect bundle | Kinect-free Xbox One option |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware and price | Kinect included. Microsoft later described this as the premium bundle; the cited announcement does not state its price. | Console offered without Kinect for an announced US price of $399 in May 2014. |
| Input options | Controller plus Kinect voice, gesture and sensing capabilities. | Controller-based play; Kinect input was unavailable unless the sensor was acquired separately. |
| Developer assumptions | Under the original requirement, developers could count on a sensor being included. | Developers could not assume every player owned Kinect; unused skeletal-tracking GPU resources could be reclaimed. |
| Games and features | Enabled Kinect-specific games and sensor-dependent features. | Games and features requiring the sensor needed Kinect ownership; platform voice commands and other functions remained available where supported. |
| Buyer trade-off | More interaction options in the box, with the sensor included in the bundle. | Choice to buy the console without the sensor, for buyers who did not value Kinect enough to choose the bundle. |
Could you buy an Xbox One Kinect separately?
Yes. When Microsoft announced the Kinect-free console in May 2014, it said a standalone Xbox One Kinect sensor would be available later that fall. That is a historical availability statement; it does not establish present-day stock or price. If shopping for a used or replacement sensor, check that the listing is specifically for Xbox One Kinect: the Xbox 360 Kinect is a different product generation and is not interchangeable.
Which controller works with Kinect?
Kinect is a sensor, not a controller, and it does not require a special controller to function as an input device. Xbox One games may use the Xbox One controller, Kinect, or both depending on the game and feature. Microsoft’s launch materials describe the Xbox One controller as a separate part of the platform; the company said it included more than 40 design innovations, a historical Microsoft claim rather than a measure of compatibility. Xbox Wire’s controller announcement.
