Mod creators who object to AI-generated reuploads are often concerned about permission, credit, control over how their work is reused, and whether an upload accurately represents who made it and where its content came from. To check whether a mod or port is authorized, trace it to the original file and author, then confirm that the permission covers the specific reuse and destination. An AI disclosure tag is not permission to reuse someone else’s work.
Why creators object to AI-generated reuploads
A reupload can separate a mod from the page where its creator stated permissions, credited contributors, described dependencies, posted updates, and offered support. A polished upload or copied credit line does not establish that the creator approved the new distribution.
AI can add a separate concern when a system recreates or transforms another person’s assets or voice. In those cases, creators or other rights holders may object to how their material was used, or to an upload that obscures the work’s authorship or provenance. These are possible concerns, not proof that every AI-assisted mod is unauthorized or that all creators oppose generative AI.
Nexus Mods’ May 2, 2023 statement said AI-generated mod content was not automatically against the site’s rules under its approach at the time, while allowing removal after a credible complaint. It encouraged creators to use AI tools only with explicit permission for all assets. That statement is historical context; the current rules are in the Nexus Mods File Submission Guidelines.

AI disclosure and reuse permission are different questions
Nexus Mods’ current guidelines distinguish among AI-generated in-game content, AI promotional media, and limited AI assistance. They require the corresponding categories—“AI-Generated Content,” “AI Media,” or “AI Assisted”—and say undisclosed generative AI use may be subject to moderation. The guidelines also require evidence for the AI Assisted tag.
Those labels address disclosure and categorization on Nexus Mods. They do not authorize an uploader to reuse another creator’s mod, assets, or other material. Check both the host’s AI rules and the permission terms for the exact file.

Check Nexus Mods permissions for the exact file
Nexus Mods prohibits submitting existing user-submitted content without permission from its original author. It also says credit is required unless waived—but credit alone does not replace explicit permission. The guidelines say permission is file specific; if an author has not provided permission information, assume you need to request it. The author or asset creator sets the distribution terms. The guidelines page was last updated September 29, 2026.
- Open the original mod’s page and identify its author and any credited asset creators.
- Read the permission presets and custom terms for that file. Check that they cover your planned action—such as a reupload, port, translation, modification, combination, or asset reuse—and your intended destination.
- If the page is silent, requires individual approval, or does not clearly cover your use, contact the author through the platform and wait for explicit permission before proceeding.
- For a permitted port or other approved distribution, retain a link to the original page and the permission record so readers can verify its source and terms.
Verify permission before uploading a mod to Bethesda.net
Bethesda’s Community Standards say: “Only upload your creations. – Do not upload content from third party websites unless you have permission from the original creator.” Its guidance says not to upload mods—or mods that take content from other mods—without creator permission. If the porter is not the mod’s author or co-author, Bethesda requires the port description to include the original author names and a link to the source mod. If permission appears elsewhere, the description must link to it. For newer ports, permission must be publicly available on the site hosting the mod; Bethesda’s current standards generally do not accept screenshots of private messages or permissions from social media or chat as evidence.
Permission terms may be conditional. A creator might allow redistribution generally, allow it only on Bethesda.net or consoles, approve only a named account, or prohibit altering or combining the mod. Bethesda’s mod rules and FAQ explain that permissions can vary. Read the terms for the exact file, destination, and account before porting.

Use this checklist to judge whether a reupload is allowed
- Find the original. Locate the original author and file page. A familiar host, copied credits, or professional-looking description is not evidence of authorization.
- Match permission to the action. Confirm that the terms cover the specific use: porting, reuploading, translating, modifying, combining, or reusing assets.
- Match permission to the destination. A grant for one site, platform, or console may not cover another.
- Check who is approved. Permission may be blanket or limited to a named account or other condition.
- For Bethesda.net, verify public evidence and description links. Look for permission publicly available on the hosting site, plus links to the original source and author information in the port description.
- Check AI disclosure separately. A required AI tag can disclose a category of content; it does not prove the uploader has reuse rights.
- Pause if anything is unclear. Ask the author through the platform and wait for explicit permission rather than inferring approval.
Rules are platform-specific and can change. The strongest guidance here concerns Nexus Mods and Bethesda.net, so check the live permission statement and current rules for the destination where you intend to publish.
