Nintendo and The Pokémon Company sued Palworld developer Pocketpair in Japan over alleged patent infringement. The case seeks an injunction and damages, but no finding of infringement is established by the sources available here. Pocketpair named three Japanese patents in its account of the complaint; reported changes to Palworld’s mechanics do not resolve the claims against earlier versions.
What is the lawsuit about?
Nintendo says it and The Pokémon Company filed a patent-infringement action against Pocketpair in Tokyo District Court on September 18, 2024, and announced it publicly the following day. Nintendo’s statement says the suit alleges that Palworld infringes multiple patent rights and seeks an injunction and compensation for damages. It does not name the patents or establish that infringement occurred. Nintendo’s September 19, 2024 announcement describes the plaintiffs’ position, not a court ruling.
This is a patent case, not a ruling that Palworld copied Pokémon characters or violated copyright. The legal question concerns the patent rights asserted in the complaint and whether the court finds them infringed and enforceable.
Which patents did Pocketpair identify?
In a November 8, 2024 statement, Pocketpair identified three Japanese patents connected to the case: Nos. 7545191, 7493117, and 7528390. These particulars come from the defendant’s account; Nintendo’s announcement did not list patent numbers. Pocketpair also said Palworld was released on January 19, 2024. Pocketpair’s statement gives the following application and registration dates:

| Japanese patent | Application date reported by Pocketpair | Registration date reported by Pocketpair |
|---|---|---|
| 7545191 | July 30, 2024 | August 27, 2024 |
| 7493117 | February 26, 2024 | May 22, 2024 |
| 7528390 | March 5, 2024 | July 26, 2024 |
The dates show that Pocketpair reported applications and registrations during 2024, after Palworld’s January 19 release. Dates alone do not establish what the patents cover, whether they are valid, or whether any game version infringed them.
How much are Nintendo and The Pokémon Company seeking?
Pocketpair said the plaintiffs sought ¥5 million from each company—¥5 million for The Pokémon Company and ¥5 million for Nintendo—plus late-payment damages. That is Pocketpair’s description of the requested relief in 2024, not a court award or a confirmed final damages ceiling. Nintendo’s public announcement says only that the plaintiffs seek an injunction and damages.
What changed in Palworld, and does that settle the case?
A June 2026 GamesRadar+ report described changes to Palworld’s summoning and gliding mechanics and said the plaintiffs had narrowed their claims to older game versions. That is reporting about the case’s scope, not a court determination.
Changing a later build does not decide whether an earlier version infringed a patent, whether a patent is valid, or what remedy a court may grant. Nor does the reported narrowing amount to a legal clearance of current versions. Those questions require a court outcome or other reliable confirmation.

What is the current status of the case?
A specialist analysis published before the relevant dates listed October 1, 2026, for a technical and evidence presentation, and November 9, 2026, for the court’s preliminary views. The October 1 date has passed, but the sources available here do not confirm what happened at that event or whether the November schedule changed. Japan’s official legal translation portal provides general legal materials, not confirmation of this case’s latest proceedings; the scheduled milestones should not be mistaken for verified events.
As a result, the post-October procedural status cannot be stated with confidence here. No decision or finding of infringement is established by the cited material.
