Nintendo set the U.S. launch MSRP for Mario Kart World at $79.99 for both physical and digital copies; Donkey Kong Bananza launched at $69.99. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has said software prices take account of regional market factors and rising development costs, but the company has not described a fixed formula for every game. Since May 2026, newly published Nintendo digital games exclusive to Switch 2 may have a different MSRP from their physical versions.
What Nintendo charged for Switch 2 games at launch
Nintendo of America’s April 18, 2025 announcement listed Mario Kart World at a U.S. launch MSRP of $79.99 in both physical and digital formats, and Donkey Kong Bananza at $69.99. Those are launch list prices, not current quotes from a retailer. Nintendo’s announcement also noted that accessory prices were subject to adjustment after market conditions changed. Why does Mario Kart World cost $80?
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa addressed pricing in Nintendo’s FY2025 financial-results Q&A, an English translation of a Japanese original. He said, “Prices for Nintendo Switch 2 products are determined through an overall evaluation of factors in each region.” He named manufacturing costs, consumer perceptions, exchange rates and local market conditions as considerations in regional pricing.

For software, Furukawa added that Nintendo considers cost increases related to factors such as larger game files and longer development periods. He said the company would continue to consider “appropriate prices for each title.” That points to title-by-title decisions informed by several factors, not a publicly stated fixed formula or a single cost figure that explains the $79.99 price of Mario Kart World. Are Switch 2 games cheaper digitally?
For Mario Kart World at U.S. launch, no: Nintendo listed the physical and digital versions at the same $79.99 MSRP. That 2025 price parity is specific to the title and launch announcement; it does not establish a permanent rule for all Switch 2 games.

Nintendo’s digital-exclusive policy from May 2026
Nintendo Support says that, beginning in May 2026, new Nintendo-published games exclusive to Switch 2 can have a different MSRP for the digital version than for the physical version. The change began with preorders for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. Nintendo says the price difference reflects the different costs of producing and distributing each format, while emphasizing that the games offer the same experience. The policy is about MSRP; retail partners set their own prices, and individual prices may vary. Nintendo Support: Nintendo game pricing
This policy concerns newly published Nintendo Switch 2-exclusive digital games. It should not be applied as a blanket rule to older releases, third-party games, or every title that can be played on Switch 2.

How the console bundle compared with buying separately
Nintendo announced a U.S. console-only launch price of $449.99 and a $499.99 Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World bundle for the June 5, 2025 launch. The bundled game was supplied as a download code. Using the announced launch MSRPs, the bundle was $50 above the console alone and $30 below the $529.98 sum of a console and the game purchased separately. That is arithmetic based on Nintendo’s announced prices, not a statement about current availability or today’s offers. Nintendo’s Switch 2 launch announcement

What to compare before buying
- Launch MSRP versus checkout price: $79.99 was Nintendo’s U.S. launch MSRP for Mario Kart World in April 2025. A store’s current price can differ; the available sources do not establish current prices across retailers.
- Physical versus digital: check the specific title and release. The launch prices for Mario Kart World matched, while Nintendo’s policy for new first-party Switch 2 exclusives allows digital MSRP to differ starting in May 2026.
- Game alone versus bundle: compare the console and game’s actual current prices and bundle contents. Nintendo’s 2025 bundle included a download code, not a physical game.
- U.S. versus other regions: the figures above are U.S. prices. Furukawa says Nintendo evaluates factors in each region, so these prices should not be treated as global prices.
- Switch 2-exclusive versus other software: the May 2026 format policy is specifically for new Nintendo-published games exclusive to Switch 2, not a universal pricing rule for all games playable on the system.
