If OBS is counting network dropped frames, its connection to YouTube’s ingest server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Other people or devices uploading on a shared ACT Fibernet connection can reduce the upload capacity available to your stream, but that possibility—and a single speed-test result—does not prove ACT is at fault. First confirm which OBS counter is rising, then compare the stream with household uploads paused, at a lower bitrate, and over wired Ethernet.
What network dropped frames mean in OBS
OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024, explains: “Dropped frames means that your connection to remote server isn’t stable or you can’t keep up with your set bitrate.” In a YouTube stream, this points to the path from your computer to YouTube’s ingest server, or to insufficient sustained upload capacity for the bitrate you selected. It does not, by itself, identify whether the cause is Wi-Fi, activity elsewhere in the home, an upstream route, YouTube’s ingest path, or the ISP.
Make sure you are looking at network dropped frames, not one of OBS’s other performance counters. Rendering lag and encoder overload are different symptoms: they concern producing frames on the computer, rather than delivering the stream to the remote server. OBS statistics and the OBS log can help establish which problem you have.
Can someone else’s internet use cause the drops?
Yes, if another person or device is using upload capacity at the same time. Cloud backups, file uploads, video calls, and other upload-heavy activity can compete with OBS on a shared connection. The relevant question is whether your connection can sustain the stream’s bitrate with enough headroom while that activity is happening—not just whether a speed test briefly reports a high upload speed.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This is a plausible shared-link explanation, not proof of a known ACT Fibernet limitation. Without your location, ACT plan, stream settings, connection measurements, and the time of the problem, there is no sound basis to claim that ACT is congested or that your plan is inadequate.
Diagnose the cause before changing several things
1. Record a representative baseline
Before changing settings, note the time, OBS resolution and frame rate, video bitrate, encoder, Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection, and what else is using the household connection. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and save the OBS log. Run an upload test as a reference, but do not treat one result as proof of stable upload capacity: a short test cannot reproduce every fluctuation during a live stream.

YouTube Help recommends: “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” YouTube also recommends testing the stream before broadcasting with representative audio and motion. Its live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance is useful for comparing your selected stream format with YouTube’s encoder recommendations.
2. Pause other uploads and compare
Repeat a comparable test with household upload-heavy activity paused, then—if practical—with the usual activity running. Keep the OBS settings and connection type the same. If drops ease when other uploads stop, contention on the shared connection is a likely contributor. If they persist, continue testing rather than assuming the ISP is responsible.

3. Lower the video bitrate to create headroom
OBS gives approximately 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for stream bitrate. This is a troubleshooting rule of thumb, not a guarantee: available upload varies, and other traffic also needs capacity. If the connection fluctuates or the household is active, reduce the bitrate further and compare results. The trade-off is lower picture quality; you may also need to choose a lower resolution or frame rate to match the available sustained upload.
YouTube’s recommended encoder bitrates below are platform guidance, not minimum ACT plan speeds or guarantees that a stream will remain stable. The figures are YouTube’s published recommendations, accessed October 3, 2026; the page does not expose a publication date.

For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube specifies CBR and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Use the recommendation for your codec, resolution, and frame rate as a reference, then make sure your sustained upload has room for variation and other network traffic.
4. Compare Wi-Fi with wired Ethernet
OBS warns that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming and recommends a wired connection. Repeat the same test with the computer connected to the router by Ethernet. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable may be useful if you need one to make that comparison; the cable is a way to test the connection, not a guaranteed cure.

- If Ethernet improves the result: investigate the Wi-Fi link, including signal strength, interference, and router placement.
- If Ethernet does not improve it: the cause may lie farther along the connection to the ingest server, or in insufficient upload capacity; gather evidence before escalating.
5. Check whether the problem is destination-specific
Where practical, compare with another streaming destination and check YouTube’s stream-health messages. OBS says testing another service can help identify whether the issue is service-related. A difference between destinations is a clue, not proof that YouTube or ACT is responsible: the tests use different routes and ingest servers.
6. Contact ACT with evidence if the problem persists
If network drops continue over Ethernet at a reduced bitrate, collect OBS logs, timestamps, upload-test results, YouTube stream-health messages, and notes on whether other services are affected. Give ACT your service location and the times of the issue, and ask it to investigate. OBS notes that an ISP may be able to address changes or unexpected congestion along the connection route. No ACT-specific upload-speed or outage figure is established here, so the diagnosis needs to be made against your connection and current local service conditions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common symptoms and what to try
| What you observe | What it suggests | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Network dropped frames rise when another household upload starts | Shared upload capacity may be contributing. | Pause the other upload and compare; lower OBS bitrate if needed to leave more headroom. |
| Drops occur on Wi-Fi but ease over Ethernet | The wireless link may be unstable. | Use wired Ethernet for streaming or investigate Wi-Fi signal and interference. |
| Drops persist over Ethernet at a lower bitrate | The issue may be upstream, route-related, or otherwise outside the Wi-Fi link. | Save logs and timestamps, review YouTube’s stream health, and contact ACT with the evidence. |
| OBS shows rendering lag or encoder overload instead of network drops | The symptom is not the network-dropped-frames problem described here. | Use OBS statistics and logs to identify the reported counter before changing network settings. |
Or let it run in the cloud
