OBS can skip frames while playing a demanding video source, but the file’s bitrate alone does not prove the cause. First check which OBS counter is rising: rendering lag, encoding lag, and network dropped frames point to different problems and need different fixes.
Identify which kind of frames OBS is missing
Open OBS’s statistics or streaming status and note which counter increases while the problem occurs. OBS’s encoding performance guidance and connection troubleshooting guidance distinguish local rendering or encoding problems from frames lost during delivery to the streaming server.
| Symptom | What it points to | First response |
|---|---|---|
| Rendering lag or missed frames due to rendering lag | OBS may not have enough GPU time or resources to composite and render the scene. | Reduce GPU workload and scene complexity; if needed, lower output resolution or frame rate. |
| Encoding lag or encoder overload | The selected encoder or its current output workload cannot keep up. | Reduce encoder or output workload using the relevant OBS output-setting guidance; the best adjustment depends on the encoder and system. |
| Network dropped frames | The connection to the streaming server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. | Investigate connection stability and whether the connection can sustain the stream bitrate. |
OBS explains that it needs GPU time and resources to composite and render a scene. A video source playing at the same time can add to the computer’s workload, but that does not establish that the file’s bitrate itself is the cause. The available evidence does not establish a universal bitrate threshold, codec, or PC component responsible for this symptom.
If the counter shows rendering lag
- On Windows, run OBS as administrator. OBS recommends this as an initial troubleshooting step for GPU overload.
- Reduce GPU work while streaming. Close or reduce other GPU-intensive work and simplify the OBS scene, for example by removing sources or effects you do not need.
- Reduce output demands if necessary. Lower the output resolution or frame rate, then check whether the rendering-lag counter improves.
- Change one thing at a time. Repeat the same playback and stream conditions after each change so you can tell which adjustment helped.
Changing the file bitrate is not a confirmed universal fix for rendering lag. Diagnose what OBS reports before re-encoding the file or changing hardware.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If the counter shows encoding lag
Encoding lag means OBS is falling behind while encoding the stream, rather than losing frames because the connection cannot deliver them. Follow the output-setting advice in OBS’s encoding performance guide and make adjustments that fit the encoder and system in use.
- Confirm that the encoding-lag or overload warning rises during the problem.
- Reduce encoder or output workload, then retest under the same conditions.
- Avoid assuming a particular encoder preset, CPU upgrade, or GPU upgrade is the answer without evidence that it addresses your bottleneck.
If OBS reports network dropped frames
Network dropped frames indicate a problem between your computer and the streaming service: the connection may be unstable, or it may not sustain the configured stream bitrate. They are distinct from OBS rendering and encoding lag. Use OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide to investigate the connection and configured bitrate.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
OBS describes dynamic bitrate as a way to lower bitrate during network congestion. It can mitigate dropped frames, but it does not fix the underlying connection problem; lowering bitrate also reduces video quality.
If viewers report buffering but OBS shows no dropped frames
Viewer buffering is not proof that OBS is dropping frames. Viewers use different devices and internet connections, so some may buffer even when your OBS statistics do not show dropped frames. OBS’s stream buffering guidance recommends considering viewer connections and platform recommendations when aiming to reach a broad audience. Ask whether the problem affects multiple viewers and compare their reports with your OBS counters.

Collect useful evidence before changing hardware
If the problem persists, capture a clean OBS log from a session where the issue occurs and record the relevant system and source details. OBS’s Help Portal provides a starting point for logs and troubleshooting. Include:
- Which OBS counter or warning increases: rendering lag, encoding lag, or network dropped frames.
- The video file and how it is added or played in the scene.
- Your OBS output and encoder settings, plus the resolution and frame rate in use.
- Your system details and whether other GPU-intensive work is running.
- Whether viewers report buffering while OBS shows no dropped frames.
There is no established file-bitrate cutoff or single hardware purchase that solves this symptom for everyone. Match the fix to the counter and evidence from the affected session.
