OBS can skip files in a 24/7 cartoon playlist for several different reasons, so start by checking which source you used. OBS documents its VLC Video Source for playlists; it requires VLC to be installed, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Then check the playlist’s loop, shuffle and visibility settings, confirm each skipped file has a valid path, and test it on its own.
First identify what OBS is playing
In the Sources list, determine whether the playlist is a single VLC Video Source or a collection of individual Media Sources. OBS documents Media Source for individual files and VLC Video Source for playlists. The VLC source will not appear unless VLC is installed; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. Troubleshoot the skipped entries in order
- Check VLC and the source type. If the playlist is a VLC Video Source, make sure VLC is installed and its bitness matches OBS. If the source is missing from OBS, verify this dependency before changing playlist settings.
- Inspect the VLC playlist options. Open the source properties and check the playlist entries, Loop Playlist, Shuffle Playlist and Visibility Behaviour. Loop controls whether playback repeats; shuffle changes the order; visibility behaviour determines whether playback continues, pauses or stops while the source is not visible. Choose settings that match the intended continuous playback.
- Check whether the source is visible and on top. Confirm the source’s eye icon is enabled. In OBS, sources higher in the list appear above lower sources, so another source may cover the playlist. Review the order in the Sources panel and bring the video source above any layer that should not obscure it. See OBS’s sources guide.
- Test each affected file by itself. Try a skipped entry as an individual Media Source and confirm its path points to a file that exists and can be opened. Compare it with a file that plays. If it fails alone too, focus on the path or the file’s container and encoding rather than the playlist transition.
- If you hear audio but see no picture, check the transform. First make sure the source is visible and not covered. A user on the OBS forum reported resolving this particular symptom by right-clicking the source and choosing Transform → Reset Transformation. It is a reported fix for that case, not a guaranteed remedy for every sound-without-video problem. See the forum report.
- If playback stops after one item, capture versions and reproduce. Note your operating system, OBS and VLC versions, source properties, and the exact file that stops. A 2018 forum report involving OBS 21.0.1 and VLC 3.0.0 describes a playlist that played one video and stopped on its final frame. That older report is a symptom example, not evidence of a current general OBS bug. See the forum thread.
Match the symptom to the likely check
- Files are missing or skipped in the sequence: verify every playlist path and test the affected files individually.
- The order seems unexpected: check whether Shuffle Playlist is enabled.
- The source stops when covered or hidden: review Visibility Behaviour and source visibility.
- Audio plays but the cartoon is not visible: check the eye icon, layer order and transform.
- One item plays, then playback stalls: record the software versions and reproduce with one known-good file and one affected file before concluding it is an OBS or VLC defect.
What to record if the cause is still unclear
The exact cause depends on the setup. Before seeking help, note the operating system; OBS and VLC versions; whether the source is VLC Video Source or Media Source; the source properties and visibility settings; the paths and encodings of affected files; and whether the symptom is a skipped transition, a stop on the final frame or audio without visible video. A minimal reproduction using one file that works and one that does not helps separate a playlist issue from a file or visibility issue.
