First check where the video disappears: OBS preview or a local recording, or only the YouTube broadcast. If OBS misses it too, start with the source type, playlist settings, file and scene visibility. If local playback is continuous but viewers see gaps, investigate dropped frames, rendering or encoding load, the connection and YouTube’s live dashboard. Those symptoms point to different causes; a playlist setting cannot fix a delivery problem.
Find out where the skip happens
Compare the same moment in three places: the OBS preview, a local recording, and the YouTube Live Control Room or player. YouTube recommends checking the encoder output, dashboard errors, CPU load, local archive and outbound connection when stream quality is poor (YouTube live-stream troubleshooting).
- The preview or recording also skips: check the OBS source, playlist entries, media file and whether the source became hidden.
- Local playback is continuous, but the broadcast freezes or loses frames: inspect OBS statistics, rendering or encoding load, and connection stability.
- YouTube replaces the picture, warns you, or ends the broadcast: check Live Control Room for policy or copyright notices.
This distinction matters because a video advancing to the next playlist item is not the same problem as frames failing to reach YouTube.
Choose the OBS source that matches your playback
OBS documents Media Source for a local file and VLC Video Source for a playlist of local files. They are not interchangeable playlist players (OBS Media Sources).

| Source | Use it for | Settings to check | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Media Source | One local media file | Loop; Restart playback when source becomes active | OBS documents it as a file source, not a multi-file playlist. |
| VLC Video Source | Several local media files in a playlist | Loop Playlist; Shuffle Playlist; Visibility Behaviour; Network caching | VLC must be installed. 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. |
If you have multiple files but are trying to chain separate Media Sources, use a VLC Video Source playlist when you need one playlist to advance through them.
Check VLC Video Source playlist and visibility settings
- Open the source properties: in OBS, select the VLC Video Source in the Sources list and open its Properties. Confirm the intended media files are actually listed.
- Set Loop Playlist for continuous playback: this makes the source restart after it runs out of media files. OBS documents it as on by default, but verify the installed source’s setting.
- Set Shuffle Playlist according to your plan: turn it off if the study stream needs a fixed order; OBS documents it as off by default.
- Check Visibility Behaviour: if the source becomes hidden during scene changes, decide whether playback should continue, pause or stop. The documented default is “Stop when not visible, restart when visible.” A source that is stopped when hidden may restart when shown rather than continue where you expected.
- Review Network caching if media is network-based: OBS documents 400 ms as the default. Treat this as a setting to review, not a universal fix for local-file skips.
These settings are checks, not proof of a single cause. OBS’s current master-branch source code also sets loop on, shuffle off and stop/restart visibility behavior, but that branch moves over time; use the settings in your installed OBS version as the authority (OBS VLC Video Source code on GitHub).

Test the file on its own
For a file that skips, try it by itself in a Media Source, then compare it with a known-good file. Check that the path still exists and OBS can read it. OBS lists these supported video extensions for Media Source: .mp4, .ts, .mov, .flv, .mkv, .avi, .gif and .webm; listed audio extensions are .mp3, .aac, .ogg and .wav (OBS Media Sources).
An extension alone does not establish that every codec or encoding inside that container will work. If the file fails alone, test a known-good media file and investigate the affected file rather than changing stream settings first.

If only the YouTube output is affected
Check OBS rendering and encoding load
OBS scene composition and rendering use GPU resources; complex scenes and sources add demand. If skips coincide with high rendering or encoding load, simplify the scene or test a lower-resolution copy of the video. Treat load as a likely cause only if OBS statistics or a repeatable test connect it to the symptom (OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting).
Check dropped frames and connection stability
OBS describes dropped frames as a connection that is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Its guidance recommends investigating the connection; lowering the bitrate may reduce drops in some cases, but it lowers quality and does not address the underlying connection problem (OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting).

Compare encoder output with YouTube’s dashboard
If playback looks healthy in OBS but not on YouTube, inspect OBS’s stream output and YouTube’s live dashboard, review CPU load, compare with a local archive and test the outbound internet connection. This helps separate a playback problem from a delivery problem (YouTube live-stream troubleshooting).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check YouTube only when the symptoms fit an interruption
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content matches. Depending on the issue, it may replace the live picture with a placeholder, warn the creator, temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream if the content remains, or terminate streams for copyright or Community Guidelines strikes. Look in YouTube Studio if the whole broadcast is interrupted or replaced; this is not an explanation for an individual file silently advancing in OBS (YouTube copyright issues with live streams).

Monetization eligibility is a separate matter from whether a playlist plays. In a policy update dated 2025-07-15, YouTube renamed its “repetitious content” policy to “inauthentic content” to clarify that repetitive or mass-produced content is ineligible under existing rules. The policy describes monetization as requiring materially varied substance and creative, educational or other value; it does not mean every looped stream is automatically disallowed (YouTube channel monetization policies).

What to send for further troubleshooting
If the checks do not identify the cause, gather the details that distinguish source failure from stream delivery: your OBS version and operating system, source type, affected file format, whether the source is hidden during scene changes, and whether the skip appears in preview, local recording or only on YouTube. Include an OBS log and relevant dropped-frame or rendering statistics when asking for help.
