Physical game releases are shrinking because downloads let publishers sell without producing and shipping a disc or cartridge for every copy, while giving them more control over pricing and access to older games. But physical releases have not vanished: the trend varies by platform and region, and Sony’s announced change applies to new PlayStation games from January 2028, not every console or games already released.
Why are physical game releases disappearing?
Digital distribution avoids the physical supply chain
A physical release needs manufacturing, packaging, distribution and retail space. A download avoids those costs for each boxed copy and can be sold wherever a platform’s digital store operates. Capcom says physical distribution also limited the shelf space it could secure and its control over pricing. Digital distribution lets the company adjust prices more flexibly and continue selling older catalog games over time. Those are Capcom’s stated advantages, not proof that every publisher earns more from every digital sale: platform fees, marketing, hosting and a game’s performance still affect the economics. Players have shifted toward buying digitally
Publishers also point to consumer preference. Sony has cited the entertainment industry’s shift from discs to digital, while sales figures from Electronic Arts show digital downloads making up a growing share of that publisher’s full-game units on named PlayStation and Xbox consoles. Those figures show a change in one publisher’s sales mix; they do not establish how much of the wider physical decline is caused by buyers, publishers offering fewer boxed editions, platform mix or retail strategy.
Digital storefronts can keep older games available
A game that is no longer prominent on store shelves can remain listed in a digital catalog, and publishers can discount it without producing another physical batch. Capcom identifies continued sales of older titles as a source of ongoing catalog revenue. That availability is not a guarantee: a publisher or platform can remove a game, and access may depend on account services or online servers.

What do the sales figures actually show?
There is no single global physical-release share established by these figures. They measure different things: EA reports its own full-game unit mix on selected consoles, ERA reports UK boxed-software sales, and Capcom reports units sold for its own games.
EA’s digital share rose across three fiscal years

These are EA estimates for full-game units on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, not industry-wide percentages. EA says Microsoft and Sony provide its digital unit counts; it estimates packaged-goods units using retail and distribution partners in North America, Europe and Asia. EA’s filing explains the measurement.
UK boxed sales contracted but remained substantial

These are UK boxed-software figures reported in ERA’s 2025 Yearbook, not global sales or total game spending. They show that boxed games still generated significant sales in that market even as they fell year over year. ERA’s 2025 Yearbook also places those figures within the UK market.

Capcom’s figures illustrate one publisher’s sales mix
Capcom’s table reports units in tens of thousands. For the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026, that converts to 54.93 million digital game units and 4.13 million physical game units.

This is Capcom’s own sales volume, not a share for the wider industry. Its following 2027/3 row is marked as a plan, not a completed year. Capcom’s sales data provides the table and unit scale.
Who benefits when games go digital?
Publishers gain flexibility and avoid some physical costs
Publishers can sell without manufacturing and distributing a boxed copy for each sale, reach customers through online stores and adjust prices more readily. Digital catalogs can also keep older games on sale. Capcom describes these benefits, including avoiding manufacturing costs and building catalog revenue after development costs have been amortized. The net financial gain is not quantified as a universal margin improvement, and the balance will vary by publisher, platform and game.

Platform storefront operators gain a central sales route
When a player buys a download through a console store, that storefront is the purchasing route and the game is associated with the player’s account. Digital sales also sit alongside platform updates and services. The sources establish the growth of digital sales and Sony’s production announcement, but do not quantify how much extra profit platform operators gain specifically from the decline of discs.
Players gain convenience, but lose some physical options
Downloads can be available without a trip to a shop or waiting for local stock, and older titles may remain in a digital catalog. A physical copy, depending on platform and edition, may offer a tangible item and the option to lend or resell it. Digital access is generally tied to platform accounts and their terms; neither a disc nor an account purchase guarantees indefinite access in every circumstance.
Retailers and physical-distribution businesses lose boxed-release demand
As boxed new releases take a smaller share, businesses involved in physical retail, manufacturing and distribution face reduced demand for that part of the market. The available figures do not quantify the total revenue or employment effect across those sectors.

Does a physical box guarantee a self-contained game?
No. A box may contain a disc or cartridge, a download code, or media that still requires a substantial download. Some games also rely on online services for part or all of their functionality. Check the specific edition’s packaging and platform requirements rather than treating “physical” as synonymous with “complete offline copy.”
Server reliance matters to long-term access. The European Commission’s 2026 communication notes that games dependent on company servers can lose some or all functionality when those servers close. The Commission said it planned stakeholder engagement on end-of-life issues by the end of 2026; its response did not propose a general legal requirement to keep commercially discontinued games playable. What has Sony announced for PlayStation discs?
Sony says production of discs for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting in January 2028. It explicitly says this does not affect games already released or releasing in disc format before January 2028. This is Sony’s stated policy for PlayStation; it should not be read as an announcement for Xbox, Nintendo or the games industry as a whole. Sony has not said that existing discs will stop functioning. Sony’s July 1, 2026 announcement gives the scope and timing.

How to choose between a physical and digital edition
Compare the particular game and edition, not just the format label. These checks can help:
- Included content: Confirm whether the box has a disc or cartridge, a download code, or media that requires an additional download.
- Offline play: Check whether the game can be launched and played without an account connection or live game servers.
- Transfer options: Review the platform and edition terms for lending, resale, account transfer and future redownloads.
- Current availability and price: Compare the local physical edition’s stock and total price with the platform store at the time you buy.
- Storage and convenience: Weigh shelf space and swapping media against download time, drive space and account access.
For readers who specifically want a disc or cartridge, physical PS5 and Nintendo Switch editions remain options where sold. Check the region, stock and box contents for the individual listing; market sales figures do not guarantee that a particular release is available.
What is still uncertain about the shift?
The cited evidence does not isolate the relative effect of changing buyer preferences, publishers offering fewer physical editions, platform mix, production economics or retail choices. Sony points to consumer preferences; Capcom emphasizes the business advantages of digital distribution. Both can contribute, but neither statement measures the cause of the overall change.
