Contemporary reports described an apparent denial-of-service attack, but did not independently prove who caused it or establish that user data was compromised. The services returned on different timelines: Xbox Live’s core services were reported running on December 26, while PSN was still recovering over the following days.
What happened on Christmas Day?
On December 25, 2014, players reported problems connecting to Sony’s PlayStation Network and Microsoft’s Xbox Live. Those services support online play and other network-dependent console features, so the disruption affected access to them rather than demonstrating a failure of PlayStation or Xbox hardware. The outage landed during the holiday period, when some people were trying to set up new consoles; reports described difficulties for some users, not a universal inability to use every console feature.
Contemporaneous coverage characterized the event as an apparent distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack. That term describes an attempt to overwhelm an online service with traffic; it does not, by itself, show that attackers entered company systems or accessed customer information. CBS News and The Guardian reported the disruption and the claim of responsibility.
Was PlayStation Network hacked, and who was responsible?
Lizard Squad claimed responsibility, and news reports attributed the disruption to the group. That is an attribution claim, not conclusive forensic proof of who directed the incident. The available reporting supports saying that PSN was disrupted in an incident described as an apparent DDoS attack; it does not establish that customer data was stolen or that the service itself was breached.

Was Xbox Live down too?
Yes. Reports described disruption to both Xbox Live and PlayStation Network on Christmas Day. Their recovery did not happen as one simultaneous, all-features-restored event. The dated reports provide snapshots rather than a guarantee that every function was available to every user in every region.

When did PSN come back online?
PSN returned gradually over the days after Christmas, according to Reuters’ reporting, which described continued connection problems on December 28–29. CBS reported on December 29 that Sony and Microsoft said their networks were back online. These reports show a multi-day, staggered recovery; they do not establish one exact moment when every PSN feature was restored for every player.
