Sales stopped on September 3, service ended on September 6, and Sony offered full refunds to buyers. The word “flopped” describes the game’s brief commercial and player-engagement showing; it was not Sony’s official financial finding.
What happened to Concord, and how quickly?
Concord was a Sony-published multiplayer hero shooter developed by Firewalk Studios for PlayStation 5 and PC. PlayStation’s August 13, 2024 launch outlook said the game would arrive on August 23 and outlined future seasons, including a second season planned for January 2025. Those plans were overtaken by the shutdown.

Why did Sony take the game offline?
In its September 3 announcement, Ellis said the launch had not gone as hoped and that the studio would take the game offline and explore options that could better reach players. His statement was: “However, the launch initial didn’t go the way we’d hoped, and as a result, we’ve decided to take the game offline beginning September 6, 2024 and explore options, including those that will better reach our players.” The shutdown announcement
When Sony announced Firewalk’s closure on October 29, it said some aspects of Concord were exceptional, but others “didn’t land with enough players,” leading to the decision to take it offline. That is the clearest public explanation Sony provided for the shutdown. The company did not publish a detailed internal decision timeline or a complete account of the factors behind the closure. What do the sales and player numbers actually tell us?
The figures frequently cited after the shutdown are third-party estimates and a separate player-engagement measure—not official Sony sales results.
- Estimated sales: GameDiscoverCo analyst Simon Carless estimated about 25,000 sales in 2024, split roughly between 10,000 on Steam and 15,000 on PlayStation, according to Ars Technica’s report. Sony did not report an official unit-sales total in the cited sources, so this estimate should not be presented as a confirmed company figure.
- Player engagement: Circana analyst Mat Piscatella reported that on August 26, 2024, fewer than 0.2% of active US PS5 players were playing Concord; it ranked 147th among US PS5 daily active players that day, as reported by Ars Technica. This is a snapshot of engagement on one date, not a sales count or lifetime player total.
Together, the short-lived sales estimate and low engagement snapshot support describing the launch as a flop in editorial terms. They do not establish Sony’s financial loss, the game’s development budget, or precisely why individual players did not buy or continue playing.

Could buyers get refunds, and can a disc still be played?
Sony offered full refunds for PS5 and PC purchases. Physical-copy buyers were directed to seek a refund from the retailer where they bought the game. Because Sony took the online service offline, a PS5 disc is not a way to play the discontinued service; Sony’s launch and shutdown announcements do not establish current disc availability or resale prices.
