The Martian did not literally make Project Hail Mary happen: the available reporting does not establish that causal link. But the 2015 film is a compelling predecessor. Both adapt Andy Weir novels into science-driven survival stories, and both adaptations were written by Drew Goddard. That makes The Martian a useful point of comparison—not a proven blueprint or the sole reason the newer film was made.
What connects the two films?
Andy Weir’s science-first survival stories
The Martian, which opened on October 2, 2015, adapts Weir’s 2011 novel. Project Hail Mary adapts another of his novels. Both put a central character in a life-threatening situation where scientific problem-solving drives the story. In The Martian, Mark Watney is stranded on Mars; Project Hail Mary follows an interstellar mission.
The shared approach makes the films natural companions, but it does not mean their science, settings, or plots are interchangeable. One is a fight to stay alive on Mars; the other takes its stakes into deep space, with a mission to address a threat to Earth.
A concrete link behind the camera
Screenwriter Drew Goddard wrote both adaptations, according to the Associated Press. That is a direct production connection between the films. It still does not demonstrate that the earlier film caused the later one to be commissioned or financed.

How does Project Hail Mary compare with The Martian?
| What to compare | The Martian | Project Hail Mary |
|---|---|---|
| Setting and stakes | Mark Watney is stranded on Mars and must survive. | An interstellar mission confronts a threat to Earth. |
| Story engine | Science-based problem-solving is central to Watney’s survival. | Science-based problem-solving is central to the mission. |
| Adaptation connection | Based on an Andy Weir novel; adapted by Drew Goddard. | Based on another Andy Weir novel; adapted by Drew Goddard. |
| Scale of isolation | A stranded astronaut’s predicament on Mars. | A deep-space mission, with relationships also part of the story. |
The comparison is strongest in the films’ science-forward premises and adaptation lineage. The ComicBook.com article describes both as humane and optimistic; that is its critical interpretation, not an established consensus ranking. Whether one works better for a viewer depends on which setting and kind of survival story they prefer.
Does The Martian deserve credit for Project Hail Mary?
It is fair to call The Martian a notable predecessor: it brought a Weir survival story to theaters, and the newer adaptation shares both the author and screenwriter. It is not supported to say the later film “owes everything” to it as a matter of documented production history. The available reporting does not show that The Martian’s success directly led to Project Hail Mary.
