Rockstar’s reported Coca-Cola comparison is about the commercial value of keeping unreleased game design and features confidential—not evidence that Rockstar and Coca-Cola use the same security systems. Reporting on tribunal submissions also describes a confidential “online 32 player format,” but that does not confirm GTA 6 Online’s launch lobby size.
What Rockstar reportedly said about secrecy
In reporting on a tribunal filing, Game Developer quoted Rockstar’s argument: “Guarding the secrets of the unique gameplay and design [of GTA VI] are akin to Apple protecting the iPhone or Coke protecting its formula. Information about new game features or development must not become public before release date.” Game Developer’s tribunal coverage presents the comparison as an argument for protecting unreleased features and development information.
The analogy concerns the value of confidential information. It does not establish that the companies have equivalent security procedures, or that either organization’s controls have a particular level of effectiveness.
What the 32-player report does—and does not—tell us
September 2026 reporting by GTA BOOM describes Rockstar submissions referring to a confidential “online 32 player format.” That supports the limited conclusion that a 32-player format was discussed or tested. It does not establish that GTA 6 Online will launch with 32-player lobbies, or that this is a final player limit. GTA BOOM’s report cautions that the launch size is unconfirmed.

Rockstar’s official GTA VI page lists PlayStation 5 and official game information, but the reviewed material does not specify an Online player count. Treat the 32-player detail as reported tribunal information, not an official launch specification.
How Coca-Cola’s formula became a secrecy symbol
The Coca-Cola Company’s own history documents custody milestones for its formula. The company says Dr. John S. Pemberton invented Coca-Cola in Atlanta in 1886, and that Asa Candler acquired the business and secret formula in 1892. In 1919, the formula was written down and placed in a New York bank vault as collateral for a loan. It returned to Atlanta in 1925 and was kept at Trust Company Bank for 86 years, until its move to the World of Coca-Cola in 2011. The company’s history of the formula describes that custody story; its FAQ says the formula itself remains a mystery to most people.

The analogy works because both examples involve information whose disclosure could matter to the owner: a beverage formula in one case, and unreleased gameplay and development details in the other. The public record is different, however. Coca-Cola publishes a historical account of where the formula was kept; the GTA Online format detail comes from reporting on tribunal submissions, not an announced game specification.

Keeping unreleased features confidential can protect a product’s reveal and the company’s commercial interests. It also limits what players can know before launch: a detail discussed internally or cited in legal reporting is not necessarily a promise about the finished game.

There is a documented security incident in Rockstar’s history, though it should not be confused with the secrecy argument itself. Take-Two’s SEC filing says an unauthorized third party accessed confidential Rockstar information in September 2022, including early development footage for the next Grand Theft Auto. Take-Two’s filing confirms the intrusion; it does not provide a basis for comparing Rockstar’s security controls with Coca-Cola’s.

- Established by Coca-Cola’s company history: The company describes key custody milestones from 1886 through the formula’s 2011 move to the World of Coca-Cola.
- Established by Take-Two’s SEC filing: An unauthorized party accessed confidential Rockstar information in September 2022, including early development footage.
- Not established: That the companies use equivalent security systems, how effective either company’s controls are, or that GTA 6 Online will launch with 32-player sessions.
