Sansa remembers Sandor “the Hound” Clegane kissing her, but the earlier bedroom scene in the novels does not describe a kiss. George R. R. Martin confirmed that the discrepancy is intentional and pointed readers toward unreliable narration. He also said the detail would eventually mean something, but the cited comments do not give a definitive explanation.
What happens in the scene—and what Sansa later remembers
The discrepancy becomes clear when the books are read in sequence:

The chapter descriptions and references are reported by A Wiki of Ice and Fire, which cites the novels. Exact wording and pagination can vary by edition, so use the published books when checking quotations or page numbers.
What George R. R. Martin confirmed
In a response recorded October 5, 2002, Martin wrote: “Well, not every inconsistency is a mistake, actually. Some are quite intentional. File this one under ‘unreliable narrator’ and feel free to ponder its meaning…” The comment is preserved in Westeros.org’s archived “Sansa’s Memory” entry.

An earlier comment, attributed to June 26, 2001 and quoted by A Wiki of Ice and Fire, is more explicit about the mismatch: Martin said Sansa would remember the Hound kissing her, “but if you look at the scene, he never does,” adding that it “will eventually mean something.” Taken together, these comments establish that the discrepancy is deliberate, that Martin wants readers to consider unreliable narration, and that he once said the detail would matter later. They do not name a single explanation.
What the “UnKiss” might mean—and what remains interpretation
“Unreliable narrator” is Martin’s framing, not a complete answer to the question of why Sansa remembers a kiss. Readers may interpret the memory through fear, trauma, attraction, romantic expectation, or some combination, but the cited comments do not confirm any of those readings. Treat them as interpretations rather than settled plot facts.

The repetition matters: Sansa recalls the kiss in more than one later book, rather than mentioning it once in passing. Still, repetition alone does not identify the memory’s cause or establish whether it reflects a mistaken recollection, a changed understanding, or another narrative effect.

The evidence for the “UnKiss” described here comes from the novels. HBO describes Game of Thrones as based on Martin’s book series, but that adaptation relationship does not establish that the television series depicts Sansa remembering this kiss. Keep the claim tied to the books unless discussing a specific on-screen scene supported by separate evidence.
