A Steam game that will not open can be blocked by missing or damaged files, antivirus software, an incomplete installer, an unsupported operating system, or a game process left running after a crash. The exact error message and the game’s system requirements are the best clues: Steam notes that launch failures can be difficult to diagnose because players use many different hardware and software configurations.
Start with the error message and a restart
Before changing settings, note the exact message Steam displays and whether the problem affects one game or several. Also consider whether it began after a game update, a security alert, or a change to your computer. These clues help separate a game-specific problem from a Steam, operating-system, or software conflict.
Restart your computer, then follow Steam’s operating-system-specific troubleshooting for Windows, macOS, or Linux. Steam’s general guidance also includes updating the operating system and relevant drivers, temporarily closing non-essential applications that may interfere, checking the game’s system requirements, and contacting the game’s developer if the steps do not resolve the problem. A computer close to a game’s minimum requirements may still have launch or performance trouble.
Verify the game’s files
A failed download, damaged file, or missing component can prevent startup. In Steam, open Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, select Installed Files, and click Verify integrity of game files. Steam says verification may take several minutes. It may report one or more files that could not be verified when those are local configuration files that should not be replaced; that result is not necessarily a problem.

Check whether your system supports the game
On the game’s Steam Store page, compare its listed operating-system support and system requirements with your computer. A game that does not support your current operating system cannot be made compatible just by verifying its files. If you are on Linux and trying a game without native Linux support through Steam Play/Proton, Steam points users to community discussions or the Proton bug database.
“Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable)”
This message generally means a game file is missing or blocked. Steam identifies antivirus quarantine as the most common cause of this particular error. Check your security software’s quarantine, then verify the game files using the steps above. If your security software flagged a file, review what it detected before changing protection settings; do not broadly disable protection or create a permanent exclusion without understanding the risk.
If the error remains, use Steam Support’s Missing Executable route. Steam asks for an error screenshot and system information when submitting a support ticket.
“This game is currently unavailable”
Steam’s troubleshooting sequence for this message is to restart Steam, update drivers, verify the game files, and then investigate installation, permissions, or network problems that fit your situation. One possibility is a secondary installer that was canceled or blocked. Games may need runtime components such as DirectX, PhysX, or C++ components; their installers are located in the game’s installation folder. If an installer was blocked, identify the component and the blocking application before trying again.

“Failed to start game (app already running)”
This message can appear when a game crashed silently or did not close cleanly, leaving its process active. On Windows, open Task Manager and check whether the game is still running. If it is, close the hung process and try again; if not, restart the computer. If you use the Steam client beta, test whether the problem occurs in both the beta and regular client. Persistent cases should go to the game’s support team. Steam’s instructions are on its “app already running” support page.

“Game is not available on your current platform”
This error means the game does not support the operating system you are currently using. Check the Store page for supported platforms and hardware requirements before pursuing file or driver fixes. Steam launch options can override settings and may help recover from incompatible video settings, but a launch flag must be supported by the specific game. Steam’s documented common options apply to particular Valve games and do not work for most third-party titles. When to contact support
If restarting, file verification, compatibility checks, and the relevant error-specific steps do not help, contact the game’s developer or the support channel named on the error page. Include the exact error text and any screenshot or system details requested. Steam notes that a configuration-specific problem may ultimately require help from a local PC technician.
