Your PlayStation account can show trophies from several console generations together, yet the PS4 and PS5 versions of one game can still have separate trophy sets. The reason is that trophy and save behavior depends on the game version and the publisher’s choices—not on a universal rule that every PS5 release must use a new list.
How can one account show trophies together but keep a game’s lists separate?
PlayStation’s trophy view combines trophies earned on PS3, PS Vita, PS4, and PS5. That account-level view does not mean every release of a particular game shares one trophy set. A PS4 release and a native PS5 release can be distinct versions of the game, and publishers can define how trophies work across them. Sony describes PS5 games as unique versions and notes that some PS4 games can be upgraded to digital PS5 versions in its PS5 FAQ.
There is no documented universal requirement that each native PS5 version must have a separate list. The available guidance establishes that versions and publisher decisions vary; it does not explain a technical rule requiring one list design for every game.
Separate lists and shared lists both happen
Publisher support guidance shows why it is important to check the specific title rather than assume that trophies behave the same way across the PS4 and PS5 versions.

DOOM Eternal: a separate PS5 set
Bethesda says PS4 trophies remain visible on PS5, while new trophies earned through PS5 gameplay count toward a separate set specific to PS5. In other words, the older trophies do not disappear from the account, but progress in the PS5 version belongs to a distinct set. See Bethesda’s DOOM Eternal support answer.
Fallout 4: separate set, with some progress potentially reflected
Bethesda also says the PS5 version has a separate trophy set. Some ongoing progress may carry over after transferring a PS4 save and re-triggering the relevant conditions; that does not mean every previously earned trophy unlocks automatically. See Bethesda’s Fallout 4 support answer.

A Square Enix example: same trophies, but no trophy carryover with a save
Square Enix says the trophies for the game addressed in its support article are the same across PS4 and PS5, but trophies are not carried over when a save is transferred from PS4 to PS5. The accessible article text does not identify the game, so this is best treated as a publisher-specific counterexample, not as guidance for another title. Read Square Enix’s trophy FAQ.
Does transferring a save transfer trophies?
Not necessarily. A save file and a trophy set are separate things: moving a save does not by itself establish that trophies will transfer, unlock automatically, or share progress between versions. Sony’s 2020 PS5 FAQ says save transfer between a PS4 and PS5 version of the same game is a developer decision that varies by title. That statement concerns save transfers; it does not set a universal rule for trophy-list design.

Before expecting a trophy to appear on the newer version, check the game publisher’s instructions for both save migration and trophy behavior. A game may keep two lists, share a list, carry over some progress, or require you to meet a condition again.
How to check which trophy list you are viewing
- Confirm which release you are playing. Check whether you launched the PS4 version, the native PS5 version, or an upgraded PS5 copy. Similar game names do not guarantee that two installed versions use the same trophy set.
- Open the game’s trophy information. On PS5, select your profile picture, choose Trophies, then select the game. On PS4, open Trophies from the function screen and select the game. These navigation steps are documented by PlayStation Support Australia.
- Check the publisher’s guidance for that game. Look specifically for whether lists are shared or separate, whether trophies carry over, and whether conditions must be re-triggered after a save transfer.
- Compare the actual trophy information for each version. Trophy counts, grades, and earning conditions vary by game. Do not infer that a save transfer and trophy transfer have the same outcome.
What to take from the differences
A separate trophy list is a version-specific choice, not proof that your account has lost older trophies or that every PS5 game works this way. The practical answer depends on the exact release and the publisher’s instructions: check the version you launched, then verify its trophy and save-transfer behavior for that game.
