1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsShort answer: Soulja Boy withdrew the SouljaGame Console and SouljaGame Handheld in late December 2018, only weeks after launch. The devices appeared to be rebranded Chinese emulation hardware advertised with hundreds or thousands of games, including software associated with Nintendo and other publishers. Soulja Boy said he “didn’t have a choice,” making legal pressure the obvious explanation. However, contemporaneous reports did not establish a publicly filed Nintendo lawsuit, court order, or official Nintendo statement confirming a threat.
What Soulja Boy was selling
The initial product push centered on two devices:
- SouljaGame Console: a low-cost plug-and-play emulation box advertised with about 800 games.
- SouljaGame Handheld: a portable emulator advertised with roughly 3,000 games.
Contemporary coverage identified the hardware as appearing to be white-label or rebranded Chinese products, including machines associated with manufacturer Anbernic, rather than a newly engineered Soulja Boy console. Nintendo Life reported launch-era prices of approximately $150 for the console and $100 for the handheld; those were 2018 prices, not current pricing. Nintendo Life’s launch report compared them with less expensive versions of similar underlying hardware.
The store listings claimed compatibility with a wide range of platforms, including NES, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, Sega and Neo Geo systems, PlayStation, PC, 3DS, Vita and even Switch-related systems. Those were marketing claims, not independent verification that the devices reliably ran commercial games from every listed platform.
Why the listings were legally vulnerable
Preloaded game files were the central issue
Emulation software is not automatically illegal. The more serious concern was the apparent inclusion and commercial distribution of large libraries of copyrighted ROM files without evidence of licenses from the relevant publishers. Nintendo’s official piracy FAQ describes unauthorized game copies, counterfeit products and devices that enable unauthorized use of ROMs as piracy-related conduct. That policy explains Nintendo’s position; it is not a court ruling about Soulja Boy’s products.

Branding and marketing created additional exposure
The advertisements referenced Nintendo-related platforms and other protected game brands. Depending on the exact names, images and sales language, that could support trademark, false-association or counterfeit-mark claims. Reports also said Soulja Boy suggested publisher deals while finding no evidence that the advertised major-game libraries were licensed. That is best understood as an unsupported or unresolved claim, not a proven fraud finding.
Generic hardware was not automatically unlawful
Rebranding an existing emulator device is not, by itself, proof of copyright infringement. The legal risk came from the software bundled with it, possible circumvention functionality, use of protected branding and any misleading suggestion of authorization. A generic shell could still be sold lawfully if its software and marketing were authorized.

The December 2018 timeline
| Date | What happened | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| December 5, 2018 | Reports described the launch of the SouljaGame Console and Handheld. | Strongly supported by contemporaneous coverage; the game counts were advertised specifications. |
| December 2018 | Listings promoted large libraries and broad platform compatibility. | Claims came from the product marketing, not independent testing. |
| December 28, 2018 | Soulja Boy rejected speculation that Nintendo would sue and maintained that the products were legitimate. | Contemporaneous reports reproduced his social-media statements. Nintendo Soup documented the exchange. |
| December 29, 2018 | The listings disappeared; Soulja Boy wrote that he “had to boss up” and “didn’t have a choice.” | The removal and post were widely reported. The specific demand, if any, was not disclosed. |
| December 31, 2018 | Multiple outlets linked the withdrawal to possible legal pressure. | The takedown was verified, but no public Nintendo complaint or lawsuit was established in those reports. |
Did Nintendo actually sue Soulja Boy?
No publicly confirmed lawsuit was established in the contemporaneous coverage. One report specifically said that no lawsuit by Nintendo or another company had been filed at that point. Dexerto and other outlets therefore described a possible lawsuit or legal threat, not a completed case.
The strongest evidence for Nintendo-related pressure was circumstantial: the advertised libraries included Nintendo material, Soulja Boy changed his position within a day, and the products vanished. A private warning, cease-and-desist letter, platform complaint or seller decision could all produce that result without a public court filing. The evidence does not show that Nintendo obtained an injunction, damages or a judgment.

Headlines saying “Nintendo wins” were rhetorical descriptions of the apparent takedown, not reports of a judicial victory. Nintendo Wire used that framing while the underlying event remained a product withdrawal.
What happened to the store and domain?
The SouljaGame product pages disappeared from Soulja Boy’s online store, and the console section reportedly returned a 404 error while unrelated merchandise remained available. A domain associated with SouljaGame was also reported to redirect to Nintendo’s 3DS store. The redirect was an unverified curiosity: coverage did not establish that Nintendo controlled the domain or that it was part of an official enforcement action. Nintendo Life reported both details.

Other publishers were potentially affected
Nintendo was not the only rights holder implicated by the advertised libraries. Reports identified games or platforms associated with Capcom, Sony, Sega, SNK and other publishers. TechCrunch described the products as being pulled after a brief run and noted the breadth of the companies whose software appeared to be involved.
What happened after the 2018 withdrawal?
The episode did not permanently end Soulja Boy’s gaming merchandise. In January 2019 he promoted another handheld and made further console claims; Epic Games publicly rejected one claim that a forthcoming product would feature Fortnite. That follow-up should not be treated as evidence about the 2018 Nintendo episode. Nintendo Life covered that exchange.

A separate 2025 story involved new SouljaGame-branded handhelds that appeared to resemble Retroid products. Retroid reportedly said Soulja Boy did not have permission to rebrand and sell its hardware. That dispute is distinct from the 2018 withdrawal and does not establish that Nintendo sued him. GameSpot reported on the later allegation.
What buyers should take from the episode
- Look for licensing information: a huge preloaded library is not evidence that publishers authorized it.
- Separate the emulator from the content: a device can be lawful in one configuration and problematic when bundled with unauthorized commercial ROMs.
- Treat platform lists as claims: advertised “Switch,” 3DS or Vita support may not mean reliable compatibility with commercial software.
- Do not confuse a takedown with a lawsuit: a seller can withdraw after private legal pressure without any public case.
- Check your jurisdiction: rules concerning ROM ownership, preservation, fair use and circumvention vary, so there is no blanket answer that every emulator or every ROM download is legal or illegal.
The accurate bottom line
Soulja Boy did sell branded emulation devices loaded, or apparently intended to be loaded, with extensive unlicensed game libraries. The listings disappeared within weeks, and his statement that he had no choice strongly suggested legal pressure. Nintendo was the most obvious suspected rights holder, but the available contemporaneous reporting did not confirm a Nintendo lawsuit, public cease-and-desist, court order or judgment. The defensible description is therefore an apparent legal-pressure takedown—not a proven Nintendo court victory.
