The distinction is between the general Linux client requirements and support documented for that specific device.
What Valve’s Linux requirements say
Valve’s current Steam for Linux Client README lists the latest Ubuntu or an Ubuntu LTS release, a 64-bit x86_64/AMD64 Linux kernel and an x86_64/AMD64 processor. It also lists 64-bit and 32-bit graphics drivers and 64-bit and 32-bit glibc. The README says glibc 2.31 or newer has been required since August 15, 2025. These are the requirements in the current README, not a guarantee that every Linux distribution or configuration is supported.
That document does not give a single explicit reason for the general client’s x86_64 requirement. The practical engineering distinction is that ARM64 and x86_64 use different processor instruction set architectures. A program built for one does not automatically run natively on the other. Running x86 software on an ARM device therefore requires an ARM64-native build or a compatibility or translation layer.
Why Steam Frame is a separate case
Valve’s Steamworks documentation for Steam Frame describes a device with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Arm64 chip and Arch-based SteamOS. It also documents support for Windows games through Proton, Android games through Lepton, and 32-bit and 64-bit x86 games through FEX.

This is device-specific support. It does not change the x86_64 requirement listed for the standard Steam for Linux client or establish general support for that client on ARM Linux distributions.
How Steam Frame’s compatibility layers differ

Valve summarizes one likely route for developers in its Steamworks documentation: “For most developers that probably means running Windows x86 via Proton and FEX.” That describes a possible compatibility path, not a promise that every Windows game is supported.

What this means when choosing or installing games
Compatibility depends on several links in a chain: the game must be available to the Steam environment on the device; the operating system and client must support that device; the game’s architecture must run natively or be translated; and its graphics APIs and other requirements must work. A compatibility layer makes more combinations possible, but it does not make every title compatible or ensure good performance.
Steam Support’s “Game is not available on your current platform” guidance says Steam Play may potentially let Windows-only games work on Linux and directs users to filter the Store for SteamOS + Linux listings. Check current platform and game-specific compatibility information for the device you intend to use; a Linux Store listing or the presence of an emulation layer is not a universal guarantee.

- On a typical Linux PC: compare the system with the current x86_64 requirements in Valve’s Steam for Linux README.
- On an ARM device: confirm that the particular device and Steam environment are supported. Do not assume that generic ARM hardware can install or run the standard Linux client.
- For an individual game: check its available platform versions and compatibility information for the device. A native ARM64 version, an x86 translation route, and a Windows-through-Proton route are different possibilities, not interchangeable assurances.
