SteamOS is no longer only a Steam Deck story: Valve now lists Lenovo Legion Go S among its officially SteamOS-powered devices, alongside Steam Deck, Steam Machine and Steam Frame. That makes it a credible challenge to Windows in gaming handhelds—but not evidence that SteamOS is replacing Windows across PC gaming or threatening Microsoft’s wider business.
SteamOS is expanding beyond Steam Deck—but on a defined list of hardware
Valve’s current SteamOS installation and repair page names Steam Deck, Steam Machine, Steam Frame and Lenovo Legion Go S as devices officially “Powered by SteamOS.” Valve also says SteamOS can be installed on additional AMD-powered PCs, but warns that its ability to troubleshoot hardware outside the officially supported list may be limited. That is an expanding footprint, not a guarantee of compatibility with every PC.
The Legion Go S is a meaningful example because it puts SteamOS on a handheld from a hardware maker other than Valve. Valve’s May 2025 update archive records the addition of official support. One device demonstrates that SteamOS can extend beyond Valve-made hardware; it does not establish broad OEM adoption or sales momentum. Availability and price vary by region and should be checked with local retailers.
Why a handheld gamer might choose SteamOS
Handhelds have different priorities from desktop PCs: players often want to pick up a device, navigate a controller-friendly interface and get into a game without treating it like a conventional Windows computer. SteamOS is positioned around gaming on Valve’s devices, and support for the Legion Go S gives buyers another hardware option. The available evidence does not include controlled user-experience tests, so it cannot establish that SteamOS is easier or better for every player.

The practical choice depends on what you play and how you use the device. A SteamOS handheld may appeal to someone whose library and play habits fit Steam’s gaming-focused environment. Windows remains relevant when a particular game, launcher or peripheral requires Windows support. There is no benchmark here to justify a general claim that one operating system delivers better performance or battery life on comparable hardware.
Does SteamOS run Windows games?
Yes, many Windows games can run on SteamOS through Proton, but not all of them. SteamOS is Linux-based; Valve describes Proton as a compatibility layer that runs Windows executables and game data on Steam Deck and Steam Machine. It is not the same as making every Windows game natively compatible with Linux.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Valve explicitly cautions that “Proton is a work in progress.” Blocking compatibility bugs or performance problems can result in a game receiving an Unsupported rating. A game’s presence in the Steam catalog therefore does not guarantee that it will launch or work well on every SteamOS device.
Anti-cheat is a significant obstacle
Some multiplayer games depend on anti-cheat systems that do not work with compatibility layers or are not configured to support them. The European Commission’s 2023 Microsoft/Activision decision discusses technical limits of compatibility layers and identifies anti-cheat implementations as a primary reason some games are unplayable outside Windows. That is a regulatory assessment in the context of a merger decision, not a claim that every compatibility failure is caused by Proton.

For a player considering a SteamOS handheld, check the status of the specific games that matter—especially competitive multiplayer titles—rather than assuming that the library’s Windows games will all work. Also account for launchers and other game-specific technical requirements.
What the Steam numbers say—and what they do not
Valve’s Steam Hardware & Software Survey describes its monthly survey as optional and anonymous. In the July 2026 snapshot, Windows accounted for 93.67% of reported operating-system readings, Linux for 4.01% and SteamOS Holo for 0.89%. SteamOS Holo is a category within Linux, not a separate share to add to Linux.

These are readings among survey respondents, not a census of all PC gamers, installed devices or game revenue. They show that Windows remains dominant among the surveyed Steam customer base; they do not measure the sales or growth rate of SteamOS handhelds.

Historical Steam data cited in the Commission’s 2023 Microsoft/Activision decision showed that 97.75% of games played on Steam were played on Windows in March 2023. This is a dated, Steam-specific snapshot—not a current figure, a measure of Windows’ share of all PC gaming, or a 2026 comparison. It nevertheless illustrates the scale of Windows’ established position at that time.

SteamOS can make a credible case for a subset of gamers without erasing that ecosystem advantage. Compatibility gaps, anti-cheat support and the still-bounded list of officially supported hardware all matter to whether a player can switch. The July 2026 survey also shows Windows far ahead among responding Steam users.
Should Microsoft be terrified of SteamOS?
Not on the evidence available. SteamOS is a competitive warning in the handheld category: Valve has broadened official hardware support, and Proton lets many Windows games run on a Linux-based system. That gives gamers a real alternative on some devices and puts pressure on Windows to serve handheld players well.
But the evidence does not show that SteamOS has displaced Windows across PC gaming, or that it has had a meaningful impact on Microsoft’s overall business. The more defensible conclusion is narrower: Microsoft should take SteamOS seriously as a focused challenge in gaming handhelds, while Windows remains the dominant operating system among Steam survey respondents and compatibility remains incomplete.
