Princess Peach’s original name was Peach. “Princess Toadstool” was a name used in the West, introduced in the English localization of the first Super Mario Bros. The change back to Peach took shape during localization of Super Mario 64, after Nintendo of America localization manager Leslie Swan discussed the name with Shigeru Miyamoto.
Why was she called Princess Toadstool?
The Japanese version of the character was named Peach; “Toadstool” was a Western localization, not an earlier Japanese name. According to Leslie Swan’s account, the English manual for the first Super Mario Bros. was outsourced to an advertising agency. Swan said the agency “just kind of created names for things,” including Princess Toadstool. Nintendo of America and the Japanese developers had limited communication at the time, which helps explain how the English name diverged.

When did Princess Toadstool become Princess Peach?
The name shifted during work on the Western localization of Super Mario 64. Swan recalled reviewing her changes with Miyamoto and a translator when Miyamoto asked, “Is Peach a bad name?” Swan said it was not, but explained that players in the United States knew the character as Princess Toadstool. Miyamoto replied that he liked Peach.

- Approximately 6 Inch Tall
Swan proposed the compromise “Princess Peach Toadstool,” allowing the character to be called Peach while retaining the familiar Western surname. After that, Peach became the standard Western name. The accounts describe a localization discussion, not a legal, marketing, or brand-driven renaming.

“Toadstool” can still appear in some remakes and re-releases of older games, generally because they preserve the original localized text. Some releases also use “Peach Toadstool” as a fuller name. Its occasional presence does not mean the Western standard reverted: the character is generally known as Princess Peach.
