These checks address the most common setup mismatches; the exact cause depends on the profile and file you are using.
1. Make sure Minecraft actually launched with Forge
A mod will not load in a Vanilla launch. In the Minecraft Launcher, select the Forge installation/profile and start the game. CurseForge’s Forge installation guide identifies the Mods button on the Minecraft main menu as a sign that Forge is active. If that button is missing, check the selected installation and resolve the Forge installation or launch-profile issue before investigating individual mods. MinecraftForge’s installation instructions also direct players to choose a Minecraft version, install Forge, and then select the Forge profile.
2. Put the files in the folder used by that profile
The mods folder is tied to the game directory for the profile you launch. For the default Minecraft Launcher directory, CurseForge lists these paths:
- Windows:
%appdata%.minecraftmods - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/mods
Those paths are not necessarily the right destination for every setup. The CurseForge app can create a separate modding environment with its own directory. Open the intended profile’s folder or check its configured modding location, then place the mod there. The CurseForge getting-started guide explains its profiles, modding directory, and launch configuration.

3. Match the Minecraft version and mod loader
A file must be built for a compatible Minecraft version and the same loader as the profile. For example, a Forge profile needs a Forge-compatible build; a Fabric, NeoForge, or Quilt build is not interchangeable just because it is a Minecraft mod. Check the file’s version and loader labels on its project page, then compare them with the profile you are launching. CurseForge explains this compatibility check in Installing Minecraft Mods and Modpacks.
Do not infer the loader from a website’s name or branding. A project may offer separate files for different loaders or game versions, so choose the specific file that matches your profile.
4. Confirm you downloaded the actual mod file and its requirements
For manual installation, the file should be a mod’s .jar, placed in the correct mods folder. Make sure you did not save a project page, an archive intended for a different installation method, or another non-mod file instead.
Some mods require other mods or specific dependency versions. Check the project page for requirements and read any startup error that names a missing dependency. Forge’s mod file documentation describes mods.toml, the metadata and dependency configuration used by Forge. A dependency problem can prevent a mod from loading even when the file is in the right folder.

5. Use the startup log when the basic checks pass
If the file still does not load, inspect logs/latest.log in the game directory used by the profile. Search for the mod’s name, its version, a dependency name, or a loading error. The log can distinguish a missing file from an incompatible version or a failed dependency.
If an error points to a particular mod, temporarily remove that mod from the profile and launch again to isolate whether it is involved. Change one implicated file at a time; removing unrelated mods or changing other settings makes the result harder to interpret. A mod’s item or feature not being visible in a particular world does not, by itself, prove that Forge failed to load the mod.

Both routes can run Forge mods. Their practical difference is how they organize profiles and where the files need to go:
| Setup route | Profile and folder | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Manual Minecraft Launcher setup | Use the Forge installation/profile and the game directory attached to it; the default directory has the Windows and macOS paths above. | Select Forge at launch, and put compatible .jar files in that profile’s mods folder. |
| CurseForge app | Profiles can have a separate modding location from the default .minecraft directory. |
Install into the intended profile, confirm its Minecraft version and loader, and launch that same profile. |
The app’s browsing and profile workflow can make version and loader choices easier to see, but it does not remove the need to install into and launch the correct profile.

When to try CurseForge app repair
Repair or launcher-setting changes are relevant when a CurseForge modpack profile fails to install or launch, not as a universal fix for one missing mod. For those app-level symptoms, follow the targeted steps in CurseForge’s modpack installation and launch troubleshooting guide. If Minecraft launches successfully and only one mod is absent, start with that profile’s folder, the file’s version and loader, its dependencies, and the startup log.
