If your PS5 turns on but your TV or monitor says No Signal or stays black, the problem is usually in the HDMI display path—not your internet connection. Connect the PS5 directly to the display, select the correct HDMI input, then test another cable and HDMI port. If that fails, Safe Mode can reset video output to a compatible resolution without immediately erasing your data.
First, identify what “won’t connect” means
This guide covers a PS5, PS5 Slim, or PS5 Pro that powers on but does not show a picture on a TV or monitor. The video path is:
PS5 HDMI OUT → HDMI cable → TV or monitor HDMI IN
If the screen shows No Signal, No Input, or remains black, troubleshoot that path. A Wi-Fi or PlayStation Network connection problem is separate; so is a controller that will not pair. If the PS5 logo appears and the screen goes blank afterward, some HDMI communication is working, but the console may be switching to a resolution, refresh rate, HDR, VRR, or HDCP mode the display chain cannot handle.
Try these checks first
- Confirm the PS5 is on. A steady white indicator normally means it is on; orange generally indicates Rest Mode. No light can mean the console is off or has a power issue. If the light stays blue instead of transitioning to white, startup may be failing. Check Sony’s indicator guidance rather than diagnosing a fault from color alone.
- Select the correct TV or monitor input. Use the display remote or input menu to choose the HDMI port the PS5 is actually connected to. Do not rely only on automatic input detection.
- Check both ends of the cable. Connect the PS5’s HDMI OUT to an HDMI IN on the TV or monitor. Reseat the plugs firmly and check for loose or damaged connectors.
- Connect directly to the display. Temporarily remove a soundbar, AV receiver, HDMI switch, splitter, capture card, or wall plate from the path. These devices can prevent or alter the signal; Sony recommends removing other audio/video equipment during troubleshooting (PS5 support).
- Try another HDMI cable and another display port. Use the cable supplied with the PS5 if available. Testing is more useful than buying a cable before you know it is at fault.
- Test another screen, if possible. A second TV or monitor quickly helps separate a display/input issue from a console issue.
Do not connect the PS5 to a display’s DisplayPort input using a passive HDMI-to-DisplayPort cable. For initial testing, avoid routing through an ARC/eARC-labeled port or any intermediary device; use an ordinary HDMI input directly on the display.

Power-cycle safely
- Turn off the PS5 by holding its power button for about three seconds. Wait until its indicator is fully off.
- Turn off the TV or monitor.
- Unplug the PS5 and display power cords for several minutes. Do not pull the PS5’s power cord while its indicator is lit or flashing.
- Disconnect and reconnect the HDMI cable at both ends.
- Reconnect power, turn on the display first, select the correct HDMI input, and then start the PS5.
Use Safe Mode to recover the picture
If the basic checks do not restore the image, try Safe Mode. Sony’s procedure is:
- Turn the PS5 fully off by holding the power button for about three seconds.
- Press and hold the power button again. Release it after the second beep, about seven seconds after the first.
- Connect the DualSense controller to the PS5 with a USB cable, then press the controller’s PS button. Safe Mode requires a wired USB connection.
If Safe Mode appears, the console can produce a video signal, making an incompatible normal video-output setting more likely. Choose Change Video Output, then Change Resolution, and try 1080p. Restart the console. Once you have a picture, open Settings → Screen and Video → Video Output and restore higher settings one at a time.

Safe Mode options: start with the least disruptive
- Restart PS5 if you entered Safe Mode accidentally or want to try a clean restart.
- Change Video Output offers Change Resolution and Change HDCP Mode. Try resolution first. Changing HDCP can help diagnose a compatibility problem, especially through capture equipment or older AV gear, but may reduce compatibility with protected video content.
- Repair Console Storage is a non-erasing option according to Sony’s Safe Mode guide.
- Clear Cache and Rebuild Database and Update System Software are later troubleshooting options if the display issue persists.
- Restore Default Settings, Reset PS5, and Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) should not be early fixes. Resetting can erase data, and reinstalling system software deletes all data on the console.
See Sony’s Safe Mode guide for the options and their warnings. If the PS5 can display normally, its system update menu is Settings → System → System Software → System Software Update and Settings (system software guidance).

If the problem happens at 4K, 120 Hz, HDR, or VRR
A setup can work at 1080p or 4K/60 Hz yet fail at 4K/120 Hz. Higher-bandwidth modes make the cable, display port, and every device in the chain more important. If Safe Mode or a lower resolution restores the picture, check these items before enabling advanced features again:
- Confirm the TV or monitor supports the specific resolution and refresh rate you want. A display may support 4K but not 4K at 120 Hz, or may allow 120 Hz only at certain resolutions or on particular HDMI ports.
- Use the PS5-supplied HDMI cable or a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for demanding 4K/120 Hz setups. Sony describes this cable category as supporting up to 48 Gbps. A cable may work at 1080p but fail at 4K/120 Hz; another device working on that cable does not prove it can carry every PS5 mode. Certification, length, connector condition, and the rest of the setup matter—not a premium brand name by itself. See Sony’s 4K guide and Sony’s HDMI cable guidance.
- Connect directly to the display’s HDMI 2.1-capable port if only some ports support the required mode. Turn on the display’s enhanced HDMI signal mode if its manual requires it.
- Check that the TV or monitor firmware is current. Manufacturers use different names for HDMI options, such as “Enhanced,” “Deep Color,” or “Input Signal Plus”; these are display settings, not universal PS5 menu labels.
- In the PS5’s Settings → Screen and Video → Video Output, check that resolution is set to Automatic or the intended mode and Video Transfer Rate is Automatic. Sony recommends checking display support, firmware, cable, port, and transfer settings for 4K/120 Hz problems.
- If the display detects the PS5 but goes black when a game or app starts, try disabling HDR, VRR, or 120 Hz-related options temporarily. Re-enable one feature at a time after a stable picture returns.
These steps isolate compatibility; they do not prove HDR, VRR, HDCP, or any one setting is the cause. A display can show the startup logo and then lose the signal when the PS5 changes output mode.

When a soundbar, receiver, switch, splitter, or capture card is involved
Connect the PS5 directly to the TV or monitor first. If the picture returns, reconnect one device at a time to identify where it fails. An older receiver or soundbar may not pass through 4K/120 Hz, HDR, VRR, or a newer HDCP mode. Switches, splitters, and capture cards can also have bandwidth, routing, or protected-content limitations.
If direct connection works but the complete setup does not, confirm that each device supports the output mode and HDCP requirements you intend to use, check its firmware and input/output routing, and try a lower mode such as 4K/60 Hz or 1080p. Avoid assuming HDCP is the culprit; use Safe Mode’s Change HDCP Mode as a diagnostic only when appropriate.

Use test results to locate the likely problem
| Test result | What it suggests | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 works on another TV or monitor | The original display, its HDMI input/settings, firmware, or compatibility is more likely than a console failure. | Try another input, check the display manual and firmware, and compare supported modes. |
| Another HDMI device also fails on the original display | The display or that HDMI input may be at fault. | Try another display input and source; consult the display manufacturer if the issue follows the screen. |
| PS5 works in Safe Mode on the same screen but not after normal startup | A normal video-output mode or system-software issue is more likely. | Change resolution to 1080p, then re-enable settings gradually. |
| PS5 works when connected directly but not through an AV device | The intermediary, its cable, routing, or pass-through limits are implicated. | Add devices back one at a time and verify their supported modes. |
| No image on multiple displays, with multiple known-good cables, including Safe Mode | A PS5 HDMI-port, internal video, or startup/power hardware fault becomes more plausible, though this is not a component-level diagnosis. | Contact PlayStation Repairs or a qualified console repair provider. |
Remote Play working while HDMI does not can be a clue that the console is running while its physical video-output path is failing, but it does not identify a specific failed part. Likewise, a “No Signal” message alone does not prove the HDMI port or HDMI circuitry is damaged.
When to seek repair
Repair is reasonable when the PS5 produces no picture on more than one known-good display, fails with known-good cables and ports, and will not show Safe Mode—or when the HDMI port looks physically damaged or loose. A console that also fails to start normally needs broader diagnosis. Use PlayStation Repairs or a reputable console repair specialist. If using a local provider, ask for a written diagnosis and repair warranty; do not authorize a part replacement based only on the symptom “No Signal.”
Do not insert tools into the HDMI port, bend pins, or attempt a port replacement without board-level repair experience. Before opening or modifying the console, check the warranty terms for your region. For the US and Canada, Sony’s warranty states a one-year hardware warranty for the original purchaser, subject to conditions and proof-of-purchase requirements; unauthorized opening or service can affect coverage (US/Canada warranty terms). Coverage and rules differ by location.
