In a Java Edition zombie design, the usual culprit is a zombie they can keep seeing, which keeps them in a panic state instead of letting them go to sleep. Bedrock Edition handles golem spawning differently, so Java fixes will not always work there. Start by confirming your edition and version, then work through the checks below.
Start by confirming your edition and version
Java and Bedrock use different golem-spawning rules, and a tutorial written for one edition often does not apply to the other. Before you change anything, note which edition and game version you are playing. The Minecraft Wiki’s “Tutorial: Iron Golem farming” page is the reference for the mechanics described here, but its figures should be checked against the version you are running.
Work through the checks in order
- Confirm the edition and version. Java and Bedrock have different summoning requirements, so identify which one your farm was built for.
- Check bed access and bed claims. Each villager needs an available bed and a walkable path to it. A bed placed nearby does not help if the villager cannot reach it, or if another villager has already claimed it.
- Check zombie visibility (Java zombie designs). Villagers react to hostile mobs they can detect. If the zombie stays visible at all times, villagers can remain in a panicked state and fail to sleep.
- Check the other golem-spawning conditions. Even when villagers sleep, a golem will not appear unless the summoning conditions are met. Proximity, nearby golems, and spawn space all matter.
- For Bedrock, check village requirements rather than copying Java advice. Bedrock’s conditions are tied to the village as a whole, not to a three-villager zombie mechanism.
Why a zombie can stop villagers from sleeping in Java
Villagers in Java Edition respond to hostile mobs they can detect, and detection depends on whether the mob is visible and within range, according to the Minecraft Wiki’s “Villager” article. A zombie placed where villagers can always see it can keep them panicking. Panicking villagers do not sleep normally, so the sleep condition that golem summoning depends on is never satisfied.
This behavior has changed over time. Mojang’s issue tracker entry MC-154256 records a Java pre-release change in which panicking villagers had to sleep and work from time to time. Farm guides written before that change, or ones that rely on a permanently panicked state with no sleep cycle, can therefore fail on current versions. If your design was copied from an older guide, treat it as a candidate for the cause.

Java golem-summoning conditions
The Minecraft Wiki’s tutorial describes two Java summoning paths. The gossiping path needs five qualifying villagers, at least one of them gossiping. The panic path needs three qualifying villagers who are panicking. Both paths sit on top of the same shared conditions, listed below.
Gossiping path
This path requires five qualifying villagers with at least one gossiping. Gossiping is the trigger that makes the golem attempt possible, so a farm where villagers never gossip will not summon through this path.

Panic path
This path requires three qualifying villagers who are panicking. It is the path most zombie-based farms depend on, which is why zombie visibility matters so much here.
Shared conditions
- Recent sleep: the wiki summary says villagers must have slept within the previous 20 minutes.
- Proximity: villagers must be within the required distance of the summoning location.
- No nearby golem: no iron golem may be detected nearby during the relevant interval.
- Valid spawn space: the spawn attempt needs an open, valid location.
Bedrock village requirements
Bedrock does not use the same three-villager zombie mechanism. The wiki tutorial instead lists village-level requirements. These are the figures it gives at the time of writing, and they should be verified against your exact version and build.

Zombie sightlines and bed access in practice
If your Java design uses a zombie, the goal is to let villagers sleep periodically while the zombie still provides panic when needed. Some designs do this by breaking line of sight at intervals, for example by placing a block the zombie cannot see past between the zombie and the villagers. The wiki’s villager reference supports checking whether the zombie remains visible, but it does not give a fixed timing for when the sightline must be broken, so the right interval depends on your layout.
Bed access is the other half of this. Confirm that each villager has a bed, that the bed is not claimed by another villager, and that the villager can walk to it. A layout that looks correct from above can still fail if a fence, slab, or door blocks the path.

Other reasons golems do not appear
Sleep is only one of the conditions. If villagers are sleeping but no golem appears, check these items:
- Villagers are too far from the summoning location.
- An iron golem is already nearby, which blocks a new summon during the relevant interval.
- The spawn location is blocked or otherwise invalid.
- In Bedrock, the village is below the 20-bed or 10-villager threshold, or the player’s simulation distance is too small to keep the village active.
Limits of this guidance
The mechanics above are the Minecraft Wiki’s summary of current rules and the Mojang tracker’s record of a historical Java change. They do not establish that one farm design is universally better than another, and farm behavior can differ across versions. If you want a precise diagnosis, the most useful details are your edition, your exact game version, and a description of how the zombie, beds, and villagers are arranged.

In practice, work through the checklist first. Most failures come down to a bed the villager cannot reach, a zombie that never leaves the sightline, or a Bedrock village that falls short of the listed village thresholds.
