Green means that copy is in the answer and in the correct position; yellow means a copy is in the answer but in a different position; gray means that guessed copy is not counted as another match. The confusing case is a repeated letter: a guess can contain more copies than the answer, so one copy may be green or yellow while another is gray.
What Wordle’s colors mean
- Green: The letter is in the answer and in the same position as in your guess.
- Yellow: The answer contains that letter, but that guessed copy is in the wrong position. For that copy, the yellow position is ruled out.
- Gray: That guessed copy is not being counted as a match. If the letter appears elsewhere in the row as green or yellow, gray does not necessarily mean the answer has no copy of it.
The current TechRadar Wordle guide describes these standard color meanings and notes that letters can appear more than once. The key is to read repeated copies together rather than treating every tile as an independent yes-or-no verdict on the letter.
Why a repeated letter can be gray
Wordle accounts for how many copies of a letter the answer contains. If your guess uses that letter more times than the answer does, the extra guessed copy is not counted as a match. The official Wordle: The Party Game instructions illustrate this: with one copy in the secret word and two in a guess, the correctly placed copy is marked green and the other is left uncovered. If both guessed copies are misplaced, only one can be marked yellow.
Example: one R in the answer, two Rs in your guess
- If one R is in the correct slot, that copy is green and the extra R is gray.
- If neither R is in the correct slot, one copy can be yellow and the extra copy is gray.
So “gray means absent” is a useful shortcut only when the row has no other colored copy of that letter. In a row with repeats, gray can mean “this copy is not another match,” not “there are zero of this letter in the answer.”

How to read a row with duplicate letters
- Keep each green fixed. It confirms both the letter and its position.
- Record each yellow as present but misplaced. Do not put that copy back in the yellow position on a later guess.
- Compare gray tiles with colored copies of the same letter. A gray duplicate beside a green or yellow copy can indicate that your guess included too many copies.
- Track the count suggested by the row. Colored copies establish that at least that many copies are in the answer; a gray duplicate warns that the answer may contain fewer copies than your guess.
The party-game instructions capture the caution well: “Just because a letter is green or yellow doesn’t mean it won’t appear again.” That is a reminder not to rule out another copy merely because one copy has already received color; the feedback for the full row still determines what the guess has established.

Combine the clues instead of reacting to one gray tile in isolation: preserve green positions, move yellow letters to different positions, and use the duplicate-letter pattern to decide which counts remain plausible. A row may confirm a letter while still leaving its total number uncertain.

In ordinary mode, you may choose an exploratory guess that does not use every clue you have learned. Hard Mode instead requires subsequent guesses to use revealed information, as described in the TechRadar guide. Using all your clues is a strategy in ordinary mode, not a rule imposed by that mode.
