That makes vertical worth testing when the content works in a tall frame—but it does not guarantee discovery, more viewers, or higher earnings.
Why try a vertical live stream?
The main reason is the viewing context. YouTube says people browsing Shorts on mobile can discover vertical live streams and scroll through them. This creates an additional route to a live event beyond a creator’s existing audience; it is not a promise that YouTube will recommend a particular stream or that new viewers will stay.
Live viewing is substantial across YouTube: Senior Director of Product Management Aaron Filner said that over 30% of daily logged-in YouTube viewers watched live content in Q2 2025. That platform-wide figure does not show that vertical streams outperform horizontal ones or predict the results for an individual channel. (YouTube Blog, September 16, 2025)
Should you stream vertical and horizontal at the same time?
If your production can support it, dual-format streaming is a practical way to test mobile discovery without giving up the landscape presentation. YouTube’s Live Control Room can deliver a horizontal 16:9 version and a vertical 9:16 version of the same event. The formats share one chat, one go-live notification, and a shared URL. YouTube says dual-format streaming is on by default in Live Control Room; check the current controls when setting up, because platform features can change. The vertical version defaults to a center crop. In Live Control Room, creators can adjust zoom and position, and choose center crop, fit to phone width, or a stacked layout. Review the vertical preview before going live: a center crop can cut off people, text, product demonstrations, or gameplay interface elements. You cannot add vertical to a stream after the broadcast has started, so decide and check the layout beforehand.
YouTube says vertical-only metrics become available in Studio 24 hours after a stream. Compare them with your goals and the context of each broadcast rather than treating a single result as proof that one format is universally better.

Landscape viewing still matters, especially for gaming with detailed HUDs, wide scenes, or complex overlays. YouTube Product Manager Barbara Macdonald said that in the U.S., over 30% of live watch time came from connected TVs in 2025. Which content fits vertical live?
Good candidates to test
- Chat-led sessions, Q&As, and creator updates where the host is the focus.
- Demonstrations that remain clear in a narrow frame.
- Mobile vlogs and quick updates, which YouTube identifies as uses for mobile live.
Use a deliberate layout for wide or information-dense content
Gameplay, sports, concerts, and conferences are common encoder-streaming uses according to YouTube. A vertical crop may work for a close-up or a dedicated portrait composition, but can make a wide game scene, small UI text, or multiple on-screen elements difficult to see. For those productions, inspect the crop or use the available layout controls; YouTube also documents an encoder approach for separate vertical and horizontal feeds. These are framing considerations, not restrictions on what creators may stream.
How to decide whether vertical is working for your channel
- Choose a format-compatible event. Pick a stream where the main subject remains readable on a phone, or plan a separate vertical composition.
- Set up dual format in Live Control Room. Confirm both the 16:9 and 9:16 previews are present and select the appropriate vertical layout, adjusting zoom and position as needed.
- Check the whole frame before going live. Verify faces, game UI, text, demonstrations, and overlays are not hidden or cut off. Make any framing changes before starting, since vertical cannot be added mid-stream.
- Compare like with like. Run a small number of comparable streams, using similar topics and time slots where practical. Note how the crop or layout affected readability.
- Review results after they populate. Check vertical-specific Studio metrics after 24 hours, alongside watch time, chat participation, returning viewers, and the goals you set for the event.
This is a practical way to evaluate the format, not a published YouTube testing protocol. Available platform-wide audience figures do not establish the incremental reach, watch time, conversions, or revenue a particular creator will receive from going vertical.

Eligibility and setup basics
YouTube’s live-streaming requirements say that a channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. Streamers must be at least 16. For streams featuring 13- to 15-year-olds without a visibly accompanying adult, YouTube says live chat or other features may be disabled. Check YouTube’s current requirements before scheduling. A phone is a straightforward starting point for a mobile-first stream. Desk, gaming, and event productions can use an encoder and equipment such as microphones, preamps, and cameras; YouTube identifies these as encoder hardware examples. A tripod or microphone may be useful, but YouTube does not require a particular accessory.
