Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →YouTube Live is growing because the broad live category attracts viewers beyond gaming, and YouTube says real-time interaction and community are part of its appeal. The clearest recent numbers show the distinction: tracked YouTube Live viewing rose in Q2 2026 even as YouTube Gaming viewing fell. Those figures establish different trends in the two categories; they do not prove that any single feature or format caused the broader growth.
What the latest figures say about YouTube Live
Two measures point to a larger audience for live on YouTube, though they cover different periods and come from different sources. YouTube reported that over 30% of its daily logged-in viewers watched live content on an average day in Q2 2025. That is YouTube’s own platform-reported audience share, not an independent estimate of growth or evidence about why people watched.
For Q2 2026, Streamlabs and Stream Hatchet reported 12.97 billion hours watched in the broad YouTube Live category, up 18.0% year over year. In the same report, YouTube Live represented 60.3% of tracked total livestream hours, compared with 58.8% in Q1 2026. These are figures from the report’s tracked-platform dataset, not a census of all livestream viewing worldwide. Read the Q2 2026 Streamlabs and Stream Hatchet report.
Why YouTube Live growth can coexist with a drop in gaming
YouTube Live is broader than YouTube Gaming. The gaming segment is one part of live viewing; the broader category also includes formats such as Q&As, classes, workshops, travel, tours, food reviews, crafts, and IRL talk. Streamlabs and Stream Hatchet say that IRL talk and variety have become important enough that gaming-only tracking no longer captures the full live audience picture.

|---|---|---|
| YouTube Live viewing hours | 12.97 billion; up 18.0% year over year | The report’s broad YouTube Live category |
| YouTube Gaming viewing hours | 1.79 billion; down 18.9% year over year | The report’s separate gaming segment |

The report says its Q2 2026 edition was the first to include YouTube Live separately from YouTube Gaming, with historical data added for comparison. Treat these as report-defined categories and measures. They show how live overall can grow while gaming declines; they do not mean gaming content is absent from the broad Live figure.
Why viewers may be drawn to live streams
Interaction happens in real time
YouTube describes live chat and a shared live experience as ways for creators and viewers to interact. A creator can respond to chat while an event unfolds, and viewers can experience a moment together. YouTube Help says that shared experiences such as livestreams help build a deeper sense of community between creator and viewer. These are YouTube’s explanations of live’s appeal, not a measured estimate of how much interaction contributes to viewership growth. YouTube Help: Why choose live.

Live works for more than games
Live programming can serve different interests and viewing habits: a class or workshop, a Q&A, a travel tour, a food review, crafts, or informal talk. That wider mix helps explain why a gaming-only metric can move differently from a broad live measure. The available figures do not identify which individual non-gaming format accounts for the increase.
New formats and discovery features are intended to help
YouTube has announced simultaneous horizontal and vertical broadcasts with unified chat, mobile reactions to other live events or creators, and AI-generated highlights that can become Shorts. The company presents these features as ways to help creators get discovered and extend engagement. Its announcement does not quantify their effect on viewing, so they are plausible mechanisms and platform intentions—not established causes of the Q2 2026 increase. YouTube Live streaming updates.

Television is relevant context, not proof of a live-viewing cause
YouTube said in 2024 that people globally watched more than 1 billion hours of YouTube content on TVs per day. That figure is about YouTube overall, not livestreams specifically. It shows the scale of television viewing on the service, but it cannot establish that TV viewing drove Live growth. YouTube’s February 2024 discussion of Nielsen’s U.S. streaming rankings also describes YouTube’s overall viewing context; it should not be read as a live-specific audience measure.
How to read livestream growth figures accurately
Hours watched, audience share, live views, and concurrent viewers answer different questions. Before comparing two figures, check whether they use the same metric, category, reporting period, geography, and source methodology.

- Hours watched measures accumulated viewing time, not the number of people who watched.
- Concurrent viewers are the viewers watching at the same time. Peak concurrent viewers is the maximum simultaneous audience during a stream.
- Live views count times a stream was viewed while it was live. This is not the same as unique viewers or simultaneous viewers.
- Average view duration describes how long viewers watched on average; it is distinct from total watch time.
- Chat rate is an engagement measure, not an audience-size measure.
YouTube’s Live Control Room and post-stream Analytics may not show identical figures: YouTube notes that Analytics data is processed and despammed. Use the same YouTube metric and reporting surface when comparing a stream with itself over time, and do not treat a Live Control Room count and processed Analytics figure as interchangeable. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the evidence can—and cannot—explain
The platform and industry figures support a measured conclusion: broad YouTube Live viewing increased in the reported Q2 2026 comparison, while the separately tracked YouTube Gaming segment decreased. YouTube’s descriptions of interaction, community, new formats, and discovery provide reasons viewers or creators may value live, but the cited material does not isolate the causal contribution of any one of them.

That distinction matters when interpreting headlines. A claim about “YouTube Live” may refer to a broad category, while “YouTube Gaming” refers to a narrower segment. A percentage change in hours watched also says nothing by itself about whether the number of distinct viewers, average session length, or peak audience changed in the same way.
For creators who want an always-on prerecorded stream
Audience-growth figures do not establish that a 24/7 stream will attract viewers or explain the growth in the broad Live category. If you already have a reason to run an always-on YouTube stream from uploaded video, StreamNeo is a cloud service for that specific task: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera.
