YouTube may not capture a livestream that runs longer than 12 hours. Its current help guidance says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. That makes duration a plausible reason a long gaming replay is missing—not proof of what happened to any particular stream. [YouTube Help: Archive live streams]
First check whether the replay is actually missing
- In YouTube Studio, open Content → Live and inspect your past streams. YouTube identifies the Live tab as the place to access previous, current, and upcoming streams. [YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder]
- If the stream appears, check its visibility setting before concluding that YouTube failed to archive it. YouTube’s archive guidance covers managing the visibility of archived streams. [YouTube Help: Archive live streams]
- If it does not appear, check whether you made a local recording and whether that file is intact. A local copy is useful only if recording was configured and the file was actually saved.
Why a long gaming stream may have no replay
YouTube’s guidance is specific but cautious: streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep a session under 12 hours if having a YouTube replay matters, but do not treat that duration as a guarantee that every stream will be archived. The 12-hour wording is a platform warning, not a published failure rate. YouTube’s guidance does not quantify how often long streams are missed, and the warning alone cannot establish the cause of an individual missing replay.
Do not confuse the archive with live DVR
Archiving is the creation of a replay after the stream ends. DVR is a live-viewing feature that lets viewers pause or rewind while the broadcast is underway. YouTube says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Turning DVR off affects seeking during the live stream; YouTube says viewers can still watch a recording of the entire stream once it is available. Protect the next replay with a local recording
YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup. For an encoder-based gaming stream, configure local recording before going live, then check during the session that the recording exists and its file size continues to grow. YouTube’s live-streaming tips specifically recommend checking the local archive’s integrity. [YouTube Help: YouTube live streaming tips]
- Confirm the encoder is recording locally, not only sending the stream to YouTube.
- Check the destination drive has enough free space for the planned session.
- During the broadcast, verify the output file is present and growing.
- After the stream, open or inspect the file before deleting it or relying on it as your only copy.
Choose storage capacity based on your recording bitrate, resolution, frame rate, codec, and how long you want to retain files. There is no responsible one-size-fits-all drive size without those details. An external drive or SSD can hold a separately recorded local file; it cannot recreate a YouTube replay that was never captured.

If a replay is already missing
- Look again under YouTube Studio → Content → Live, including the stream’s visibility setting.
- Locate and verify any local recording. If it is complete, you can use that file as your available copy.
- If you are eligible for Creator Support, contact it with the stream details. YouTube’s guidance does not promise that an archive that was never captured can be restored.
A TeamYouTube community FAQ published on December 3, 2018, said a particularly long stream might take up to a day to process.
